Chapter 33

I felt myself freeze at his words “What do you mean? Who’s got you?” I asked.

“I don’t know. I brought you back to my house after you passed out and stepped out for a minute, only to come back to you missing. When I stepped out to go look for you someone knocked me out.” It sounded like he was in pain, but I think it was more from him admitting someone knocked him out.

“Someone knocked you out?” I was trying to make sense of the situation. Someone knocked the god of war out? What?

“Yes, that’s what I just said.” He growled into the phone.

“Hey, don’t get snappy with me!”

“Who are you talking to?” I screamed dropping the phone, hearing a voice behind me. I jumped off the bed spinning around to see Thanatos lounging there with a lazy smile on his face.

“You scared me! You do know there’s a door, right?”

“You do know this is my room, right? I don’t need to knock on the door.” He said.

“I could’ve been naked!”

“Now that I wouldn’t have minded.” He winked at me.

“Ugh you disgust me.” Just then I remembered Ares on the phone. I looked around the floor searching for it until my eyes landed on it. Just as I went to reach for it, it was picked up by the devil himself.

“Give me my phone Thanatos,” He held up a finger as he put the phone to his ear.

“Who is this? Ahh Ares old friend nice to hear from you. Oh really? Kidnapped you say? Got yourself in quite the situation I see, but anyways nice catching up. Bye now.” Snapping the phone shut he tossed it back to me.

“What did you do that for!? He needs our help!” I tried redialing the number, but no one picked up.

“I don’t help anybody.” Leaning back against the headboard he closed his eyes.

“How can you be so selfish? If it wasn’t for Ares, I’d be dead now because of you. If he hadn’t saved me from that demon!” By the end of my sentence I was yelling at him. Are all gods this selfish? Or is it just him? I don’t think Erebus would ever dismiss someone like that.

“What demon?” He seemed shocked by the information. Did I not mention the demon attack before? Before I could blink again, he was standing dangerously close to me. “What demon Isabel?” I felt his breath fan across my face. Minty fresh. He reached out grabbing ahold of my arms.

In that moment something came over me. It was like an urge that I couldn’t explain. Before I could stop myself, I crashed my lips onto his. He froze, I was about to pull away when his hand slid up my arm to the back of my neck, securing me in place. He moved his lips feverously against mine making me gasp. Which he took as an invitation to explore my mouth. He pushed me against the wall as his hands slid down to my waist, gripping my hips. He hooked his hands under my legs hinting for me to jump up. I obliged happily as I kissed him, wrapping my legs around him. I nibbled on his lip and he groaned sending fire through my body. I could feel vibration starting at the tip of my toes. My powers are back!

We broke apart to catch a breath, well I needed one anyways. I don’t think he did. I avoided all eye contact with him as I pushed him away creating space between us. I’ve never been kissed like that in my life. Something within me changed but I don’t know what.

“Shit!” I heard from in front of me. Oh my god did he regret it? Was I not a good kisser? I think I’ve had a decent amount of practice, I mean Jeremy never complained. Oh my god what if he was just being nice and I was a bad kisser the whole time?

“What?” I’m not sure I wanted him to respond.

“Come here.” He grabbed my hand dragging me to the bathroom. Now this really feels familiar. He paused making me face the mirror.

“I’m not sure what I’m suppose- Oh my god what is that?” I moved as close to the mirror as I could get, examining the mark on my neck. Getting a closer look, I realized it was a bird. “Why is there a pigeon on my neck?”

“It’s not a pigeon idiot, look closer.”

“I’m as close as I can get! And it looks like a pigeon to me.” Through the mirror I saw him roll his eyes.

“It’s a Phoenix.” He stated calmly.

“The suicide birds?” All I knew about the Phoenix bird was from what I seen in Harry Potter, and to me the bird seemed suicidal. I mean who sets them self on fire for no reason?

“The Phoenix represents rebirth, not suicide.” He was speaking to me like I was a child.

“Great, why is it on me? I didn’t even feel it there.” I kept staring at the tattoo in disbelief. It looked pretty cool if I’m honest. The bird itself was small, but the wing span stretched from my earlobe to the middle of my neck. The tail disappeared behind the back of my neck, so I wasn’t sure how long it was. The head was angled like it was yelling something up to the sky.

“I’m not sure, we’re still trying to figure you out.” I turned around to look at him.

“Who is we?”

“Don’t worry about that.”

“Whatever, this is freaking me out! Why did it choose now to show up? It wasn’t there before we....” Kissed. I saw a smirk appear on his face.

“Before we what Isabel?” He taunted me.

“Nothing,” His smirk grew wider if that were possible.

“But you’re right it wasn’t there before.” He left the bathroom all of a sudden and I darted out behind him.

“Where are you going?”

“I need answers.” He reached for the doorknob, but I slid in front of him. I was tired of getting dumped off and left out of the loop. If he was going to get answers about me then I should be there.

“I’m coming too.”

“Like hell you are.”

“Why not?”

“Because I said so.” He looked down at me. Was he always this tall?

“I’m going.”

“No you are not and that’s final.”

“Will you shut up for five seconds?” Thanatos growled as I sat in the car singing Circle of Life from The Lion King. Not only did I convince him to let me come by asking over and over again until he snapped. I also got him to drive a car like a normal person.

“Why are you so rude? You asked me on this trip!” I smirked. He didn’t bother replying. Instead he gripped the steering wheel with all his might. I decided to put him out his misery and sing louder! Ha! serves him right.

Minutes later calm jazz was playing. I glared at him as I tried to change the station. “Don’t you dare touch that radio.” He growled. I slumped in my seat staring out the window. It was dark out, if I could guess I’d say it was midnight. Suddenly something occurred to me.

“We can look for Ares while we’re out!”

“Not going to happen.” He shot down the idea fast.

“Why not?”

“I told you I don’t help people.”

“But you’re helping me.” He glanced in my direction and shrugged.

“Cause you’re mine, that’s different.” Did he just call me his? What did he mean by that? Is it just me or did my heart stop? Before I could open my mouth and ask what he meant by that, the car stopped.

“What do you mean I’m yours?”

“We’re here, get out.” I looked out the window to see us parked in front of a nightclub. What was with gods and nightclubs?
