Chapter 8

I closed my eyes, screaming as I waited for the impact of the icy water. But it never came. I stopped screaming, opening one eye. Looking down the water was below me, but I wasn’t falling towards it. Instead I was suspended mid-air, floating above it. I started screaming again, flailing around in the air.

“Would you stop screaming?” That same voice demanded. I looked at the bridge I had been on moments ago and saw the cloaked guy still standing there, glaring at me.

“What did you do to me?” I asked shakily. I knew he had something to do with this. I looked down once again at the water. God I’m going to be sick. From the bridge it didn’t look that bad.

“What did I do to you? You did this to yourself. You wanted to die, and I was just helping,” He snarled.

“Put me down!” I yelled. He gave me a cruel smile. Next thing I know I was falling again. I screamed as I fell towards the water. My body crashed into the freezing water below me. I tried swimming up for air as I sank further down into the water, bubbles leaving my mouth as I continued to scream. My lungs were burning as I kicked my legs as hard as I could. Above the water still on the bridge the cloaked figured stared down at me. I closed my mouth to stop more water from getting in. My vision was starting to blur as the tides continued pulling me under. This is it, this is where I die.

Another scream tore through my throat as I came to the realization that I was dying, allowing me to swallow more water. I regret ever stepping off that bridge. I didn’t want to die, not today and not like this. My eyes started closing as I took my last breath. Then it was all over.

I looked around in confusion as I opened my eyes, I was back on the bridge. A gasp left my lips as I checked my body, I was bone dry. Was it all a dream? Of course not, I’m still on the bridge. I looked around for the cloaked figure and saw him nowhere in sight. Taking shaky breaths, I quickly made my way back to my car.

Checking the time on my dashboard it was 2 am. I picked up my phone seeing I had tons of missed calls from Sydney. I started my car up reversing off the bridge as quickly as possible. As I drove away, I looked in my review mirror. Standing in the middle of the bridge was the cloaked figure swinging his weapon around in his hand. I pressed down harder on the gas. Who the hell was that guy? What did he want?

I reached my home in record time running into the house and locking the door. I ran upstairs, not bothering to check if anyone was home. I feared for my life, I was so scared. I locked my room door behind me backing into a corner. I felt as if someone was following me and that made me even more scared.

I moved over to my computer sitting down in my chair before turning it on. Seeing that cloaked guy I feel like I should know what or who he was. I pulled up google chrome and typed in ′figures in dark cloaks with a knife’. I scrolled through all the results none making sense, until finally I seen an article talking about the Grim Reaper. That’s when it all made sense, I gasped jumping away from my computer. Could that have been the stare I felt at the party tonight? Was a Grim Reaper stalking me?

“You could’ve just asked who I was ya know,” I heard a voice behind me. I jumped, spinning around to see the cloaked figure casually laying on my bed, with his back against the headboard. The grim reaper was laying on my bed! I was frozen in fear. Was he here to kill me?

“W-what?” I stammered out.

“You’re a little slow today aren’t you? Or are you always this dumb?” he asked mockingly.

“What do you want from me? Are you going to kill me?” I asked, slowly moving away from him as far as possible. I tried to make my way to the door without him noticing.

“What do I want from you? You have nothing to offer me sweetheart. As for your second question, do you want me to kill you?” I couldn’t see his face, but I knew he was smirking.

“N-no, then why are you here?” I asked. I screamed, ducking as his scythe came flying towards my face. I looked behind me to see it embedded in the wall. He tried to kill me. I needed to get out of here!

“Do not question me little girl.” He growled. My heart was still racing from almost being sliced by his scythe. “Too bad you don’t want to die, because my sources tell me you’ll be dying real soon.”

“Why? How?” I asked in a shaky voice. I’m going to die soon? I have so much to live for though. I felt tears filling up my eyes.

But they quickly widened in fear as he appeared in front of me. I tried screaming as his hand shot out, wrapping around my neck. A low growl left his mouth as he lifted me off the ground by my neck. I clawed at his hand that was cutting off my air supply.

“I told you not to ask me questions!” he snarled in my face. I wheezed trying to breathe as black spots started forming. Just when I thought I was about to pass out, I was dropped to the floor. I fell on my hands and knees gasping for breath.

“I don’t know how you’re going to die, perhaps you were meant to die on that bridge tonight,” He said walking away from me and back over to my bed, “but I’m sure it wasn’t then, you would’ve never gone through with killing yourself. But you are going to die. As we speak the shadow world clings to your soul just waiting your arrival.” As he said this, I suddenly felt fingers all over me. Some going through my hair, others rubbing my back, arms and legs. I shivered at the feeling. What was that?

I wanted to ask questions, but I was afraid of being choked again. So instead I just stayed on the ground staring up at him, rubbing my arms trying to get the feeling of the hands off of me.

“What? Cat got your tongue?” he asked.

“If I’m not dying today then why are you here? Who are you?” I asked quickly, scurrying away before he could attack me. His scythe appeared in his hand and I thought he was going to slice me in half with it.

“I do not need reasons to follow my future victims. Pretty soon you’ll be begging me to stay,” He started walking over to my closet. I frowned in confusion as he walked inside, closing the door behind him.

I waited several minutes for him to come back out. Finally, I got the courage to get up and go check. My hands shook as I grabbed the door knob. I opened the door, and no one was there. Where did he go?

“Looking for me?” A dark voice asked behind me. Before I could turn around I was pushed up against my bedroom wall, fear settling in my stomach. He pressed his body against mine trapping me against the wall as his scythe appeared at my neck. I felt tears spilling out as I tried to get out of his grip. “I’m Thanatos, my sweet Isabel. Also known as the God of Death,” he said huskily as his tongue darted out to lick my cheek, “and you’re mine.” My eyes widened at his cruel smile. He turned around, walking away before vanishing into thin air.

How did he know my name? I slid down the wall until I was on the floor wrapping my arms around my legs. I was sure he was gone this time but that didn’t make me any less afraid. How had my world taken such a turn? One minute I was living the carefree life with a boyfriend who I thought loved me, and now I’m on deaths hit list.

I climbed into bed pulling the covers over my head as I silently cried myself to sleep.
