Chapter 4

It was time for orientation so Bart and Rena said quick goodbyes to Ali and Luka. Professor O’Malley too, excused himself to get ready to speak during orientation. Luka hugged his sister, he knew she wasn’t one for physical touch but this was something they both needed. “Have fun this year Re. Remember, the experience is only as good as you make it.”

Rena pulled back from their hug “When did you get so wise? Who are you and what have you done with my brother?”

He chuckled and ruffled her hair earning a scowl from her as she slapped his hand away. “Don’t worry your annoying big brother is still here.” With one last goodbye the siblings parted ways.

Bart and Rena headed to a room full of other first years. Many were standing awkwardly trying to make small talk with other strangers they were just meeting.

“That Ali kid was like half in love with you.” Rena remarked with a chuckle.

“Yeah I know.” Bart replied as they found some seats against a cement wall “I half thought he was about to make a pass at me.” They both laughed very loudly, although drowned out by the white noise of people talking. “At least I have a couple familiar faces here. Especially since we both registered as hunters.”

Rena gave a small nod in agreement “Yeah I guess having a familiar face won’t make this place seem as bad.” Bart glanced at her with curiosity after her comment, did she not want to be at Ethelwine? He wanted to ask but she seemed like the type that wouldn’t open up so quickly. He didn’t blame her. The two fell into silence once again.

“I wonder what it’ll be like.” Rena ponders gaining Bart’s attention, she was observing the students around her. “The classes I mean, I wonder if it’s all it’s cracked up to be. I’m hoping as first years we get a chance to pick out weapons we want to specialize in.”

Bart gave her a confused look “Weapons?”

Rena rose an eyebrow in return “Yeah, Hunters get to pick a weapon to specialize in, I’m not so sure what I want to pick yet.” She paused turning to Bart “You know for having a famous brother you don’t know much about our world. Didn’t Augustus have a weapon he was known for using?”

“Umm I don’t know. Honestly, beyond a few hunting stories and such I don’t know much about my brother in this world. When he was with me he never bought any of the magical stuff into my life. He wanted to keep it simple for me ever since our parents died.”

“Hmm.” Rena pursed her lips for a moment, her calculating eyes staring at Bart before she smiled. “Well you’re lucky, I’ve been surrounded by this stuff all my life, and it gets pretty crazy sometimes especially when it comes to magic. The simple life...“She shrugs untroubled “sounds pretty nice to me.”

The crop of new students all were moved into the grand courtyard. There were stadium seats that curtained around an outdoor amphitheater. “Please, be quick about finding your seats. Hm?” O’Malley’s familiar voice echoed over a microphone as the crowd gathered together. Alongside him on stage were four other professors. They all wore different colored ceremonial robes that indicated their status as Headmasters.

Bart and Rena took their seats in the middle of the pack. “I hope this doesn’t take too long.” Rena muttered “I’m starving.” Bart reaches into his pockets suddenly remembering the chocolates he had stolen earlier that day.

“Here.” He handed a few to Rena. “German chocolate. Better than any other chocolate.”

Rena accepted them and threw a few in her mouth letting out a happy sigh. “Keep it up with the chocolates and I might have to keep you as a friend.” She continued to happily munch of the sweet snack grinning at Bart. The crowd grew silent as Mr. O’Malley began to speak more.

“Well, welcome everyone to what I can only hope will be the start of a phenomenal journey, hm. I am Professor Theodore O’Malley, and I am the headmaster of the Mage College.” His tall, wiry frame was dressed to the nines, but draped over the top of his suit was a gown garnished in deep purples and shining silvers. The colors of the mages.

“To my left, and your right, are Headmasters Novak, of the Grims colleges, and Ozil, of the brutes. Klaus Ozil was a strong looking man whose age was hidden behind a well kept body. He wore a robe of navy with a light khaki color sewn in.

To all the newly registered Brutes allow me to say.” O’Malley’s voice got more hush as he leaned into the podium mic. “It’s not too late to reconsider hm?” This got a few giggles from the crowd, but Ozil sat there with no change of expression.

Novak was a beautiful woman, so beautiful it was a little unsettling and intimidating. She stood tall around 5′9, her long deep violet saree like skirt stopped at her ankles showing her bare feet and adorned around her waist were colorful sashes, she wore a white blouse that hung off her shoulders and a scarf fashioned as a headband, her long thick black hair tumbled down her back. Her gown was a deep green color similar to Ozil and had black accents sewn in.

Her tan skin made her expressionless violet eyes pop. It seemed as if everyone shivered under her intense gaze. Her eyes swept through the crowd before pausing and lingering on Bart a knowing smirk on her face as she stared at him. Bart squirmed in his seat uncomfortably until her eyes flickered away.

“You okay?” Rena asks leaning over to Bart sensing his discomfort.

“Yeah..I’m good.”

With one last uncertain look Rena returned her attention to the stage. “To my right is head Architect, Arianna Moretti.” She was average height, long brown hair that was up in a high ponytail, her gown was a bright orange color adorned with yellow accents. You could tell she was a strong woman, though she did not look muscular by no means, it was easy to sense she had a powerful aura around her. She had a large smile on her face as if there was no where else she’d rather be.

“And finally, my dear friend, Headmaster Rodney Parkinson of the Hunters college!”

Professor Parkinson had a smile straight off a movie poster. Everything about him screaming his magnitude as an individual. It was easy to see why he garnered so much of the applause (it didn’t hurt that the hunters, under his leadership, were far and away the most cohesive and astute group of students and instructors within Ethelwine.) He nodded and waved to the crowd, his gown a deep maroon with neutral whites added in.

“Now then, I know there are a few of you that are still unsure of what class you would like to take part in...let me help you. The Mage college is the BEST possible choice!” O’Malley exclaimed through a cheeky grin.

Rena rolled her eyes at O’Malley “Definitely not the best choice for me.” She mumbled under her breath crossing her arms.

“I dunno.” Bart said casually, “I think it would be pretty cool. Mr.O’Malley froze some cops that were chasing me earlier.”

Rena tsk’d and leaned back in her chair. “Yeah and my brother froze a werewolf as it was about to maul me to death, you don’t see me wanting to wave a wand around casting spells.”

Orientation came to an end allowing Bart and Rena to leave the Grand courtyard. Excitement was buzzing in the air as the new students filed out, talking eagerly about what the year had in store for them.

Thinking it was time to visit her dorm Rena said a quick goodbye to Bart and took off towards the building. According to her paperwork, she was in a year 1 dorm in the center of campus, Dorm 12.

As she walked closer to the building she grew nervous wondering about her roommate. She was hoping she’d like her and that she’d be easy to room with. Thinking about it she’d never really lived with anyone else. Once she was old enough to care, Luka was already living at Ethelwine and only returned home for holidays not allowing her to understand the true meaning of having a housemate.

Entering the building she made her way towards the stairs leading up to the different dorm halls. Luckily her room was only on the second floor. She pitied the other unfortunate students on the fifth floor. A couple of steps and down some halls, Rena grew closer to her new home. Chewing on her lip Rena read her paperwork.

Irena Beasley, Room 1226

Quicker than she expected she soon stood in front of the wooden door reading 1226. Pushing aside her fear she used the bronze key given to her to unlock the door.

The first thing she noticed were plants, lots of plants. Green vines seemed to crawl along the wall of the right side of the bedroom. She noticed her suitcases were set on the left side of the room, where the walls were bare compared to her roommate’s side. It was a small room, not leaving much space to do anything. Small wooden wardrobes rested on each side of the room alone with two sets of desks and chairs. Coming around the corner towards what she assumed was the bathroom. All of a sudden she came face to face with her roommate, who seemed a little startled. “Oh, hello” Her soft voice echoed through the room, she had a very thick accent. Romanian maybe? “You must be my roommate.”

She offered a small smile, she was much shorter than Rena with shoulder length golden curly hair, and bright green doe eyes. She fragile. “Yeah I am, I’m Irena Beasley, but you can just call me Rena. You are?”

“Sorina Dalca, Sor for short.” She replied back smiling widely, before glancing around the room then looking back at Rena sheepishly. “Sorry for already decorating, I assumed you picked your side already since your bags were set there.”

Rena shook her head, “It’s okay, I don’t mind.” She paused, staring at the vines and plants “If you don’t mind me asking, what’s with all the-”

“Plants?” Sor interrupts with a giggle “Sorry about that as well, I’m very into botany, taking a bunch of classes this year for it. Plants are well, my life. I tend to go a little overboard when it comes to them though.” She turns and gracefully walks over to her side of the room. With a wave of her hand, the vines along the wall seemed to grow farther out, covering the pale white color, small buds of flowers began to sprout. Her short golden hair bounced on her shoulders with each step she took.

“Ah,” Rena states nearing her small bed and throwing her backpack on top of it, ready to unpack her things “You’re a mage.”

“First ever in my family.” Sorina replies with a grin continuing to use her magic for decorating “It’s very hard to become one when both of your parents are hunters in Transylvania,”

Rena’s head quickly turned to face the girl, so that explains the accent. “Wait really? Does that mean they’re vampire hunters?” Rena knew the legends of Vampires and how they resided in Romania, mostly Transylvania. Hunters in that country solely hunted vamps, she never hunted one herself, but dreams of the day she could.

Sor nodded her head “Yes they are, best in all of Romania or so people say. You can imagine my father’s disappointment when I told him I wanted to become a mage, especially after I killed a vampire myself.” She nonchalantly waved a hand in the air as if it was the most uninteresting thing in the world.

Rena was thankful they had something in common: straying away from family tradition.

Her eyes widened and her mouth was agape as she stared at her new roommate “Tell me more!”

Sor let out a bell like laugh at Rena’s excitement “That’s a story for another time roomie. Now what about your family?”

Rena stared at the girl is disbelief “Wait, you don’t recognize my last name? Or who I am?” That was a first, everyone knew the Beasleys, must to Rena’s disdain.

Sor shook her head and tilted her head to the side in confusion “No? Should I?”

Rena was shocked to say the least, to this girl, she wasn’t Luka’s younger sister or a famous Beasley, she was just...Rena. It was refreshing “I think you can I are going to be great friends.”
