Chapter Nine: The Mate Bond

It was official. I was part of the Pack. This was the finalstep. This would seal thedeal.

I stood in front of the Pack, Marc was at myside. All eyes were on me, the excitement in the air was apparent as I stood before them.

The Pack had seen and accepted the human part of me,now it wastime for them to meet my Wolf.

I took a deep breath andclosed my eyes, letting her take control.

My bones snapped, shifting. My jaw twisted and my fur began to grow. It was just as painful thistime as it was when I'd shifted in the office. It was over fairlyquickly, though, and the other Wolves quickly followed suit. Marc raised his muzzle to the sky and howled. My Wolf yipped excitedly and we ranthrough the woodstogether.

Marc's Wolf and my Wolf led the Pack, as we crashedthrough the thickets of trees. Wolves howled gleefully, showing their appreciation and acceptance to Marc as their Alpha and me as their Luna. My Wolf just about combusted with the pride she felt.

I, on the other hand, felt a strangesense of belonging.

Ever sincebeing attacked by those Wolves in the forest, I'dnever felt like I belonged. Now, I knew thereason why. I was meant to be here, surrounded by these Wolves.

Thisplace was meant to be my home

My Wolf, who had apparently heard my inner monologue, howled her agreement.

And the run continued on.

The next day was fairly normal. Lyssa stayed by myside the way shealways did, as wewalked down the hallways of Rosary Academy. The Pack membersalways bowed their heads with respect whenever I passed by. It was strange for me, and definitely something that would take sometime toget used to.

"When are yougoing tostart your duties as Luna?" Lyssa wondered inbetween classes.

Lyssa hadonce said that she stayed with me so often because she was a Beta, and it was customaryfor the Beta to stay with and guard the Luna with his or herlife. She'd jokingly said it was a good thing I was easy toget along with or she'd have to renounce her title as Beta.

"Luna duties?" I raised a brow at this.

"I guess Marc hasn't told you yet. He probably doesn't want toput to much onyour plate."

Well, what exactly does a Luna do?" I asked, tilting my head to the side.

"A lot of helping out with the Packs. The Luna is normally in charge of handling what events she and the Alpha attend. She's responsible for checking up on the pups of the Pack, visiting a lot of the wounded warriors and things like that. They say a visit from a Luna is powerful enough to heal the hurt members of her Pack. No one knows if that's true or not, but it would probably comfort them. Having you there."

I was quiet after that, pondering Lyssa's words. My Wolf, however, was pacing around in my head, restless. She'd been this way since I started my first class.

Something's not right, she was saying, muzzle pulled back over her teeth in a fearsome snarl. I don't like this. Something's wrong.

Before I even had a chance to ponder what my Wolf was saying, Lyssa stopped me dead with four dangerous, frightening words.

"I'm sorry," I said, politely, eyes wide. "Could you repeat that, please?"

"Marc's father is here," she repeated, slowly, amusement twinkling in her eyes. "He probably wants to meet you."

My mouth opened and closed a few times before I snapped it shut. I felt very much like a fish out of water.

"He wants to meet me?" I squeaked, internally cringing at how frightened I sounded. "Why?"

"You're his son's Mate. Of course he wants to meet you." She rolled her eyes at my antics, humor all over her face. "Now get your ass into gear or we're going to be late for class."

I couldn't explain why I was so nervous about meeting Marc's father.

Actually, you know what? Scratch that. I could explain it perfectly.

From the stories I'd heard about him, whispered through the hallways of Rosary Academy, he was a hard-ass. He was strict, but fair and he was a no-nonsense kind of guy. He was one of the strongest Alphas in history. He was responsible for claiming the territories of France and Germany, and merging them into the strong, powerful Pack we had today.

Just his name scared the crap out of me.

Alpha Caine.

Caine as in the guy who killed his own brother.

Caine as in the guy who committed the first murder.

Caine as in the guy who was damned for the rest of his life for the sin he committed.

The bell rang and I jumped slightly, startled.

"Nervous about meeting the former Alpha?" Lyssa asked, standing beside me as I gathered my books slowly.

"Of course not," I lied.

Lyssa gave me a deadpan look and said, "There's really no need to be nervous. You being a part of the Allen family was written in the stars. He'll love you like the daughter he never had."

I was silent, but I hoped Lyssa was right.

Marc met me outside the classroom, like always. He took my bag, slinging it over his broad shoulder. His hand found mine and, like always, tingles shot through my body.

"Thanks, Lyssa. I'll take it from here," Marc said, smiling kindly at her. "We'll see you at dinner."

"Sure thing, boss," Lyssa said, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

Marc stared after Lyssa as she went down the hallway. His face was unreadable, but I could feel his Wolf was troubled.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

The words just came to me. For some reason, I just worried about Marc all the time. I missed him even when he was with me. His scent--the smell of soap and pine--made my worst days better. Easier to bear.

I wanted to say this was all because of my Wolf, but really, I knew it wasn't.

I knew I was beginning to grow fond of him. Not my Wolf, but me. Tanaya Brinks.

"Nothing," he said, reassuringly. "I wanted totalk to you, actually. About myfather."

I squirmedunder his steady gaze. I knew this was coming and I was not at all prepared it.

"He's in town hewants to meet me, right?"

Marc's lips pulled up at the corners, his eyes twinkling with fondness as helooked down at me.

"Is that why you're soanxious?" he wondered, softly. "Because myfather wants to meet you?"

I shifted fromone foot to the other, my discomfort apparent. Marc said the same thing that Lyssa said. He promised that his father wouldlove me. That the Moon Goddess had written me into their family, and hisfather's love for me would come asquickly as his mother'slove had.

I wasn't sosure, though.

Marc'sfather was enormous.

I mean Marc waslarge. His frame was packed with muscle and his stance wasone of strength, but hisfather was like a bear inhuman form. He waseasily at least 6'10 with bulging biceps. He had dark hair and hazel eyes. He stood beside Jane, and they complimented each other so well, I couldn't help but stare in awe. Where he was this tall, frightening beast, she was this tiny, soft beauty.

"Dad," Marc greeted his father, smiling. "This is my Mate. Tanaya."

He spoke of me withsuch pride, I immediately felt the blood beneath myskin grow warm.

His father took me in with sharp eyes. Uponlooking closer, I could see curiosity shining beneath them. He wassimply a parent in this moment. A parent looking to see who his son was destined to be withfor the rest of hislife.

"Tanaya," Caine finally spoke, his voice so deep it seemed to bounce straight off of the walls surrounding us. "I'm the former Alpha, Caine. You can call me Caine. My son hasn't stopped talking about you since the day hefound you. It's a pleasure to meet you, littleone."

"It's nice to meet you, too," I said, smilingnervously and extending myhand to him.

He looked at it in surprise, before he grinned in understanding, taking my hand in hismuch largerone. My hand all but disappeared.

"My son mentioned you grew up in the human world. You were bitten, correct?"

"Yeah, I was." I flinched alittle at the memory.

"Strange," he mused, looking at me and then shooting alook at his Mate. "Very rare, too. It's almost unheard of for a human to become a Were."

Jane nodded, looking like an excited little girl. "Isn't it the strangest thing? I'd heard that there was a girl who had been bitten and turned. You can imagine my surprise when I found out that same girl wanted to attend school here. It waseven more surprising when sheturned out tobe Mated to our son. I have to say, though, the Moon Goddess chose well." She leaned herhead against her Mate's arm, looking at Marc and I fondly. "Look at how well they compliment each other."

My Wolf raised her head with pride at those words, she thought Marc and I were a perfect match, too. Not only in Wolf form, but in human form, too.

"It'strue," Caine said, a slight smile flitting across his face. "Youtwo do look good together."

I felt Marc's Wolf huff with pride at hisfather's approval of me.

"Welcome to the Moon Howlers Pack, Luna," Caine said, bowing his head slightly in a show of respect. Jane followedsuit with a grin on her pretty face.

Marc and I ended up in a small glade. It was surrounded by trees and tall grass, flowers ofdifferent colors blooming here and there. It was late in the evening, the sun was beginning to fall behind the horizon, and fireflies flickered softly in the dying light. Asmall pond was set in the middle of the small oasis.

Ilooked around in awe.

"This is beautiful," I murmured, taking it all in.

"I thought you would like it," Marc said back. He was standing beside me. He wasn't looking at the beautiful scenery before us, instead, his focus was on me. His gaze was like fire and it burned the side of my face as he watched me. Tingles shot down my back and it was so intense, I had to hold back a gasp.

"I don't think I've ever seen aplace so beautiful in myentire life."

I felt Marc smile. It was the weirdest damn thing. Feeling him smile. My eyes werefocused ahead of me, and yet, I knew that he was smiling. I could sense that my happiness made him happy.

"Sometimes when I'm on patrol," he was saying, his eyes never leaving my face, "I come through here. I was recently thinking that thisplace might be something you would like." He was quiet, then, waiting for my input.

"Well, you would be right," I breathed, finallyturning to meet his eyes. "I like it."

When our eyes met, electricity passed between us. It was like lightening, but stronger. It struck the heart instead of the body. As soon as it struck, it was like my heart was in flames. I couldn't explain it properly, I don'tknow if I will ever be able to explain it properly. The only way I can describe it is like this: every hair on my body stood as goosebumps rose on my skin, every cell in my body came to life and my skin burned as if someone had placed me in a human sized oven and set it as high as it could go.

His eyes grew dark and he stepped closer to me. The need that shone in his eyes both excited and terrified me. I was riveted, unable to move. I felt our Wolves connect, our souls touching. I couldn't help but lean forward as he wrapped his arms around me.

In this moment, he was more handsome that I'd ever seen him. His dark hair brushing his chin, his mouth parted in desire, his dark eyes burning into mine as the Wolf behind them howled.

"Tanaya," he whispered myname, gazing down at me as if I was the most beautiful thing he'd ever laid eyes on.

Right as our lips were about to touch, there was a loud howl. It cutthrough the atmosphere the Mate Bond had created and returned me to myself.

I stepped back, eyes wide as I looked at him.

He, on the other handlooked annoyed, his lips pursed.

"I have duties to attend to," he said, slowly, unwillingly. "It's getting kind of late. You should go to bed."

I nodded and was about to scurry off when he grabbed me by the waist, leveling his face with mine.

"We will finish what was started here very soon," he murmured, quietly. Behind his eyes, I swear I could see all the dirty things he wanted to do to me.

I gulped and pulled myself from his grasp, running for my life.
