Chapter 1: The Mission Begins

Myrria paced in the throne room of the palace on the Dragon Isle. She had not felt this afraid in many years. She knew what the Creator expected of her and yet she worried that she would not be able to recover this time. The good doctor had assured her that the transformation would work and returning to her dragon form was also easy, but she was not so sure. The evil one had been so strong as of late and with the persecution of innocents accused of witch craft she was not so sure that this was a good time to introduce a retransforming dragon into an already tension filled community. Too many people and dragons had disappeared and they didn’t know why or where. They needed to find answers, they needed to infiltrate the camp of the enemy and this seemed to be the only way.

Alorn, Alyssia, Cielo and Fane strode into the throne room.

Alorn rested a paw on his mate’s forearm. My love you should not get yourself so worked up it is not good for you or anyone else.” Alorn said.

Myrria growled at her mate and Alorn took a step beck. He knew better than to push her when she was in this mood.

“Daughter that will be enough. Alorn has done nothing and is only concerned for you.” Cielo, the ruler of the dragons and mother to Myrria, said.

“I know mother. I’m sorry Alorn. You know I love you, love all of you. I am just so unsure about this mission. I feel a great fear deep down inside. And I have doubts about the success of the transformation process. As much training as we have had and as many times as I have done it, I still worry about returning to my natural from.”

The doctor has assured us that that should not be a problem.” Alyssia said. “Otherwise I would not be asking you to do this. The Creator only asks that we trust him and he will see us through. We must trust that He knows best.”

“But does He? He has seemed strangely silent lately. I fear he has abandoned me.”

“Do not talk that way daughter. He will never abandon you. He is always nearby waiting to help.”

Then why do I not feel him any longer.”

“Perhaps you have shut him out unwittingly.”

“Take you time while on this mission to find Him again. I am sure he is waiting. Cielo responded.

"Yes Mother. But what of my eggs; who will protect them from the evil one?”

Now it was Alorn’s turn to growl. “And what am I chopped liver. I will be here listening for your call and caring for our eggs. You need not worry on that account. With the help of your mother and Adraya I am sure the eggs will be just fine until your return. Alorn answered his mate.

“I am sorry Alorn; I suppose I am just looking for any excuse to get out of this. I really fear things will not go smoothly on this mission.”

“But when has the Creator ever promised smooth. We are meant to have trials and challenges. You should realize that better than any other Myrria. For you have faced many challenges, and come through them. Should we have things any easier than the Creator’s own son? Did he not suffer the ultimate pain and suffering for humans and dragons alike. Why should you or any of us be any different?’ Alyssia said.

Myrria bowed to the Grand Dragon Knightess. “I am sorry your majesty.’

Myrria bowed to the Grand Dragon Knightess. “I am sorry your majesty.’

Myrria looked at Fane. “Are you prepared?”

Fane nodded.

“You both must be careful. Remember who you are and what you are doing.” Alyssia said.

“Yes mother, we have gone over this numerous times. I am sure that Myrria know what we are to do.”

“Fane it is not Myrria that I worry about. But you. You will be human. You are human. We do not have the ability to change our forms. And you may become vulnerable and exposed.”

“Mother I can take care of myself. I have trained and gone on many missions against the evil one. This is not my first rodeo.”

“I am aware of that, but I am your mother and I will always worry. I am more concerned with the relationship between you and Myrria or Rahela as she will soon be. , a helpless female. You are at an age where you are considering a mate. The Creator has not revealed to us as of yet who that will be. Do not let yourself become enamored with Rahela. For she can never be your mate and become heir to the Grand Dragon Knightess.”

“Mother, I know all of this. I will be on my guard to ensure my feelings remain that of a brother and protector.”

“Please do not act as if I am a child.” “I know the risks.”

“I am just making sure. Sometimes you can be strong willed and disregard reckless. Do your best to avoid ta situation where you could sink to those levels.”

“Yes Mother.”

“All right, Myrria, Fane if you two are ready let us begin.”

“But, wait where is the doctor.” Myrria asked.

“No worries, Here I am dearies. Are we ready?”

“I suppose as ready as we’ll ever be.”

“All right Myrria, you have eaten the dragon fruit and prayed to the Creator for strength and wisdom.”

“I have.” The great purple dragon bowed her head and the Doctor placed a cross shaped necklace in her large forepaw.

Myrria closed her large almond shaped green eyes. “Dear Creator I am your devoted servant. Grant me the tools necessary to perform your works. Grant me your grace and mercy and guide me down the path you have set before me. May I be your humble and blessed servant. Let your will be done in my life.”

A purple mist filled the room for a moment as the humans and dragons alike in the space recited the Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

“Mother Mary as you stood by and supported your son our savior Jesus Christ may we also dot the same with your unquestioning faith. May we accept the mission set upon us by the great Creator and follow through with the same unwavering faith you demonstrated when you accepted the will of the Father.”

As they finished their prayer the purple mist slowly dissipated and where once stood the great purple dragon that was Myrria, now stood a young woman. Alyssia handed her a peasants skirt and blouse of simple cotton in muted colors. Rahela quickly put the clothing on while Fane turned so that he could not see her naked. When she finished she rolled her long umber colored hair in a bun and placed a white cap over her head.

“All right, I am ready to leave. Are the horses prepared?” Myrria asked one the cap was situated on her head.

“Yes I sent Darren to saddle them.”

“Then let us leave.” Myrria walked toward the door.

“Wait daughter.” Cielo said stepping in front of Rahela, the girl who had so previously been a twelve foot purple dragon.

“Yes Mother.”

Cielo reached down and took Rahela’s small hand in her own large forepaw. “Be careful and don’t ever forget our love for you. Do not hesitate to call if you need us.”

Alorn stepped up to stand beside Cielo. “Yes be careful. Come back to me, to our young ones.”

Rahela nodded and walked through the towering double doors that opened to the courtyard.

One black and one white steed stood saddled in the courtyard. Fane and Rahela mounted the horses and after saying more goodbyes cantered out of the courtyard.

The pair would ride to the docks and catch a ferry to the mainland. As they rode out through the surrounding countryside families of the Dragon Knights and citizens of the Dragon Isle that served as support for the Dragon Knights greeted the pair and wished them well on their journey. Many of the people also prayed, for they all knew the seriousness of the mission that Fane and Rahela were undertaking.

Once on board the ferry things got quiet and Rahela was able to relax. The transformation had taken a lot out of her and she wasn’t use to riding horseback, since dragons don’t usually ride horses.

Fane brought her a cup of water and some fruit. After she had eaten they reached the port of Dobrogea the original home of the Dragon Knights. St. Andrew and a group of new Christians had founded the Dragon Knights in the city where St. Andrew had spent twenty years of his life preaching and converting its people. The knights had moved to the Dragon Isle to protect its people from persecution. The Creator placed protections on the island so it could not easily be found by the enemy. Portals had been established around the world so the Knights could easily move around the world to do their work for God.

Today though Rahela and Fane did not use those portals as they traveled through Romania to their destination in a little village near Brasov.

Lauren Sanby: This is an excellent story. Very gripping and keeps your attention throughout. Hoping the author is writing a sequel because I'd love to read more about Rhi and Andreas and find out what else Rhi is able to do with her powers.

Hudson: Your story was fantastic Erin! The Rising Sun was one of the first stories I read on Inkitt, and I have to say I don't regret the three to four days I spent pouring through the story.Probably the biggest strength I see in your writing is your characterisation of Eliana, Oriens, and the rest of th...

Stephen Warner: To start off, I am thoroughly impressed. The writing style is somewhat unique, and the plot seemed to move at a nice and steady pace. genlynne2379: I read the other review of this book and I must say that I disagree with it wholeheartedly. I do not believe the author put the apostrophes in the names just to be unique, but because the characters are supposedly of a different race than humans. They are Anmah. They should have different names a...

Catherine Kopf: Wow! This was a really great story. I really enjoy reading fantasy, so it didn't take long for me to become invested in the book and its characters like Jacob. I really liked your writing style, and it seemed to flow very well. The descriptions that you used for your world were also created n...

Erin Crowley: The concept here is really strong, but the execution is definitely lacking. Tenses, grammar, etc are all off, with at least one or more errors per 'Page' on my phone. The writing style is almost broken- sentences move into each other awkwardly, and are filled with an excess of "filler words", lik...

Mourn8220House: When first reading "Avarice," I thought it would be another fairytale but I was taken back the author's approach and choice of ending. There is little to be said for the story and overall plot besides the sudden twists and speculation, other than that I do not want to ruin a fantastic tale, you m...

Jessica Esa: With a tantalising end to the first chapter, the authour has given us a treat and a welcome addition to the fantasy adventure genre. To limit it to just such would be an injustice however, as this novel clearly draws on elements of historical fiction, fairy tale and horror. Simply, there's someth...
