Prologue

18 is a very dangerous age for someone living in my warring land of Mystica. Like how its name implies, Mystica is filled with enchanting creatures - pegasi, griffons, unicorns, dragons, mermaids, sirens, sea serpents, fairies, pixies, gnomes, goblins, ogres, you name it. A lot of us are hybrids, creatures that are a mix of two or more species. Hybrids are usually much more powerful than an ordinary creature, depending on their heritage. The strongest and most powerful of these hybrids are the Nightingales.

Nightingales are very majestic beings, having at least five powers from any creature in existence. Most if not all Nightingales have wings, whether if they be from a pegasus, griffon, dragon, or whatever. And they all have very powerful magic. Once all of their abilities are mastered, they have the potential power to create, save, or destroy almost anything.

Mystica used to be a peaceful world. Everyone was able to live in harmony and happiness. Up until the Nightingales had an enormous population boom. The leaders of Mystica were calm, collected, and noble people, but no one can resist the natural temptations of greed. As the Nightingale species became more popular and powerful, the world leaders wanted them to be part of their army forces. However, the Nightingales didn't want to be used as weapons. They only wanted to live normally like everyone else. The tensions broke into a rebellion, and the rebellion turned into war.

For centuries, the Nightingales have been hiding away in the deepest, darkest, most secret parts of Mystica. The population split itself apart to other cities and nations, so if a hideout was ever found and raided, we wouldn't all be wiped out. While some parts hid in the shadows, others hid in plain sight, using their "camouflage" ability to hide their wings and unusual eye color to the public.

Then, almost 18 years ago, a little Nightingale was born, with strawberry-blonde hair, tan skin, large navy-blue wings, and very bright, electric blue eyes. What surprised the community was that this Nightingale was a girl, and there aren't many female Nightingales. That's only because the female Nightingales are faster, swifter, stronger, and smarter than the males. Because of that, many made up most of the armies. Whenever the Nightingale forces perished in battle, they would lose many female Nightingales in the process. The birth of the little girl was greatly celebrated, for a new warrior-to-be had entered the world. They named the infant Carissa Wonder.

Carissa grew up to be a very strong, independent, and courageous young woman, with the most power anyone had ever seen. She was the strongest of them all, her power exceeding the ones of the rulers of Mysicta. Confident yet modest, Carissa didn't let her title get in the way of her humble, caring heart. She was as loyal as a dog, always there for anyone who needed her.

The powerful Nightingale grew up in secret after her true potential and power was revealed. Her community and family new that if Mystica ever found out they had someone like her on their side, they'd go to extremes to make sure sweet Carissa was fighting for them instead. The rest of the Nightingales would want her to start military training immediately so she could fight sooner. No one wanted that for Carissa, so they kept her hidden away from the world, never letting her out of the cave that her community lived in.

But then, one day, not too long after she turned 15, Mystican soldiers found and infiltrated the cave Carissa lived in. The majority of the Nightingales fought and escaped unscathed, though some were badly wounded. Carissa too, had to fight against several soldiers to escape, and because of her strength she was able to fly away without a scratch. However, witnesses saw her fight back, and could easily see the potential she carried. They then went back to their rulers to tell them about the Nightingale. From then on, one of the biggest priorities was to find Carissa Wonder and take her in as a soldier for the Mysticans.

It was the most frightening thing Carissa ever faced, for she had been exposed to the warring world too early. From that day forward, she started dedicating her life to training for the army. She knew that she was being hunted, but she didn't care, and she ignored the warnings. Her motivation was knowing that her kind was being cut down, and she would make sure that she would do her part into ensuring the end of the war and protecting her people.

But like I said before, 18 is a dangerous age for people in Mystica, especially if you're a Nightingale. It's when you're finally exposed to the world from beyond your cave, and into the raging battlefield. It's when you fly out into the chaos and fight for your kind, and your life. It's when you finally have the chance to make your mark in the war, and when you have the opportunity to help stop it. It's when most people die fighting for who they are and what they believe in.

I'm Carissa Wonder. The strongest and most powerful of all the Nightingales, and the one who broke her body into becoming an even more powerful warrior. I'm the one who was hidden in the shadows because of that power.

And I'm about to turn 18.

Brian Shaber: I very much enjoyed this. I was a fun read, the characters and story expanding immensely as it went (almost to the point of bewildering me). The characters, settings, and scenes were vivid. The world-building (though, as I said, bewildering after a while) was most impressive. The grammar erro...

Aki Trilee: This is one of the best books I've ever read. The author tells a story about a girl who goes through so much stress but able to find true love. Beautifully written, very emotional and romantic. I ended up staying up until three in the morning so I could keep reading. FLAWLESS!

GWritesNovels : This book was highly enjoyable! The story was beautiful and I loved every moment of it. Allison and Nicole felt very real and three-dimensional, and their relationship was beautiful. I would definitely read it again, and these characters will stay with me for a long time.

William Elliott Kern: Long story, the plot uncovered midway through the story. From beginning, the story was fast moving. Then dragged on for quite some time. The Author was good in describing her characters, their clothing, etc. but a lot of that disclosure distracted from the story moving fast. Not withstanding, the...
