I wake with a start, I’m in the hospital hooked up to an IV. My body is on fire and it’s so hard for me to breath. Searching the room I find that I’m alone but I can hear voices outside the door, they’re speaking angrily but in a hushed tone.
“What in the hell is happening to her?” Rykers voice has me relaxing immediately.
“We aren’t totally sure, but it seems her body is rejecting Graysons mark. We’ve never seen anything like this before.”
“It’s possible for somebody to reject a mark?” Grayson asks concerned
“If you asked me yesterday, I would have said no but with Alethea she’s such a remarkable female I wouldn’t even be phased by it. The moon probably gave her more powers than we could ever imagine.”
“Do you think if she rejects his mark that Orions mark will return?” Ryker asks, I love that he speaks about Orion as if they were best friends.
“Unfortunately since Graysons mark was in the same spot as Orions I don’t think that it will still be there, but like I said before, she’s remarkable so we don’t know.” the new doctor is a nice male, he’s always been very respectful toward me.
“That’s going to destroy her. Fuck!” Rykers fist hits the wall shaking the portraits in my room.
“Is she going to be okay? Will she live through this?” Rykers concern makes me blush but at the same time terrifies me. Could this really kill me?
“She’s a very strong female but whatever is happening inside of her is dangerous and is threatening her. The fever hasn’t gone down in 3 days and she’s still unconscious, that is what worries me at the moment.”
“I’m going to fucking murder you Grayson.” I can hear Ryker attack Grayson, I hear the doctors yelling at the two males to stop, a few solid punches later they’re separated and I hear Brian telling Ryker to calm down and to go see me.
“I don’t know how I can go see her laying in that bed, and come back out and not kill Grayson.”
“Your mate needs you Ryker. Go be with her. I will deal with Grayson.” Ryker thanks Brian and I can hear his large footsteps coming toward my room.
Stepping through the door I see him, he looks exhausted. I smile when I see how messy his hair is, like he’s constantly running his hands through it. My heart monitor begins to alarm but not because I am getting worse but because I see him.
“You’re awake?” he whispers, I stare at him waiting for him to come to me.
“I’m awake.” I say, my throat scratching painfully.
Ryker hurries toward me smashing his mouth against mine, I thought we’d lost our connection because of Graysons marking, but I still feel our shocks and they’re strong as before. Now my heart monitor is really going crazy.
The doctor rushes through the door and a concerned Grayson is right behind him Both of them noticing that I am definitely awake. The doctor flushes and steps out of the room, quietly excusing himself. Yet Ryker doesn’t pull away, I think he’s trying to prove a point and right now that’s not what I really need, but I can’t seem to bring myself to stop.
“I’m glad you have a black eye, I hope my fist meeting your face hurt. A lot.” I say staring straight into Graysons eyes.
“Alethea, I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking, my wolf just took over and he marked you as his. I tried to stop him.”
“What kind of Beta are you Grayson? You have no self control over your wolf? How can you be apart of the leadership of this pack when you can’t even handle your wolf?” I can hear the anger dripping from my voice.
“Apparently I’m not a good fit for the position.” his head hangs in shame and it hurts to tell him these things but it’s also the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts.
“No I really don’t think you are. But it is not my decision, it’s your Alphas, and I promise you he won’t be as nice as I am.” I look too Ryker but he can’t even turn around to look at Grayson. I reach my hand up and give his forearm a comforting squeeze. Grayson’s doesn’t appreciate my affection toward another male, especially a male who’s more than him.
“I will discuss your punishment with you when I’m not so hot headed. You marked my female Grayson and that’s not something I can ever forgive.” his eyes still focus on something outside of the window. I can tell he’s trying so hard to keep his composure.
“I understand but Ryker, my wolf is attached to her. I can’t keep myself away from her no matter how hard I try.”
“You don’t have a choice! Alethea can choose whether she wants you around or not!” Ryker turns around finally showing Grayson how angry he really is.
“But I don’t have a choice Ryker, it’s pulling me to her.”
My chest tightens, I am having trouble breathing. Suddenly my eyes roll into the back of my head and I seize, but I’m still conscious to what’s happening around me. I can hear Ryker screaming for a doctor to come help me and I hear Grayson yelling too.
I feel a burning liquid running through my veins and I stop convulsing. My chest was still tight but the moment Grayson touched my skin I was able to breath again, and that made him happy. Turning to Ryker I could see the anguish in his eyes that he wasn’t able to comfort me in that same way.
The doctor stares at me and I can see the lightbulb go off in his head, it’s like he’s finally connected the last puzzle piece.
“You’re rejecting the mark but your wolf isn’t strong enough to reject it completely. Since you haven’t been able to shift, I believe she just isn’t strong enough to rid the mark off.”
“So how do I reject it completely?” I question
“Well since you’re an Alpha yourself, I think that Ryker needs to mark you, the strength of his wolf will be the strength you need to get through this, especially because your wolf has accepted Ryker as your mate already. Since she’s accepted Ryker and he is superior to Grayson I firmly believe that will help your wolf reject that of a lesser wolfs mark.”
This wasn’t how I imagined Ryker and I marking each other. I always knew that we would mark each other but now that it seems like it’s more of a chore than for the reason it was created, to bring two mates even closer.
My eyes meet Rykers and I can’t help myself from tearing up. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be.
“So what you’re saying is, she’s rejected the mark already but can’t completely rid it from her body without the help of me?”
“Right, her wolf has rejected Graysons mark but she isn’t strong enough to get it out of her body, if you will.”
“And their’s no other way?” he asks grimacing
“Unfortunately for the sake of her life, I don’t believe we have any other choice.”
“I won’t do it while she’s in the hospital, I want to be able to mark her the way I imagined I would. I just need an hour to go by the house and get everything ready, do I have that time?” he asks, my heart races knowing what could possibly be happening tonight.
“Yes but try and make it quicker.” the doctor says.
Ryker bends down grazing my lips, with a sweet smile he pulls away.
“I will be back in one hour for you.” he whispers nibbling my ear lobe. Nodding my head I watch him leave.
“Alethea are you sure this is what you want? I don’t know if I can just let you go.” Graysons hand meets my cheek sending shocks through me.
“I’ve loved Ryker since the first day I saw him, I didn’t know it then but I found myself being pulled to him and I don’t have that with anybody else, including you Grayson.”
“Just let me kiss you one time, then I will let you go.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea Grayson, I don’t want to give your wolf any ideas.” I turn away from his hand but think maybe it would be good closure for him.
“Just one kiss that’s all I ask.” he whispers moving closer to my lips, I admire his beauty but he just doesn’t compare to Ryker. Nobody compares to Ryker.
Nodding I allow the kiss. Graysons lips are soft and warm, his hands were soft when holding my face, he deepens the kiss separating my lips, his tongue carefully caresses mine but I pull away.
“That’s enough.” I say, I think he finally believes me now when he looks at my heart monitor and realizes that it never once changed compared to when Ryker kissed me and alarmed everybody.
“I’m sorry for everything Alethea.” he starts to leave but I need him to understand something.
“I’m not rejecting you because of your scar Grayson, I’m not Maggie. In another lifetime if I hadn’t had the connection I do with Ryker we maybe could have loved each other but that’s just not the case. I also firmly believe Maggie is a different woman and that you should give her your full attention.”
“I will try. Thank you Alethea.”
I ask one of the nurses to help me shower and dress nicely. If we were to do this, I wanted to look good for him. Luckily we’ve worked together before so she was so kind to me and understood what was happening.
“He’s going to faint when he sees you.” she smiles applying me some lip gloss.
“I just wish it weren’t under these circumstances.”
“It was bound to happen, you guys just kept putting it off.” she smiles sweetly.
An hour is up and I’m sitting on the edge of my hospital bed and I’m ready for Ryker to come pick me up. My heart is beating a million miles a minute, I can’t slow my breathing down either.
Opening the door I see the love of my life in a suit with beautiful roses. My heart swells and I know that this is the right thing to do. I know I’ve made the right choice.
“I love you Ryker.” I smile standing to move toward him. My chest meets his chest and I feel his lips kiss the top of my head.
“I have never been happier in my life Alethea, you’ve changed my life for the best and I couldn’t imagine my life without you in it. You’ve destroyed every wall I’ve ever built and you’ve brought in so much sunshine to my life, I’ll never be able to thank you enough for that. Through our ups and downs and the deaths of our families, we’ve made it to the finish line, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Let’s go home.”
“Lets.” I whisper wiping away a couple of tears.
Slipping into his car we make it to our house and suddenly everything really hits me, I’m going to become a part of Ryker and I will become a part of him. Orion won’t be the only male to own every single piece of my heart and soul.
Before I can open the door, Ryker scoops me up into his arms carrying me like a bride. I giggle loudly and stop the moment he brings us through the doorway.
