Chapter 1

I had this brainbubble...

Check out this place the rays told me about.

Eastern Neck Island. Humans set it aside as a wildlife refuge, so no houses and staring humans and garbage and stuff.

Island.

It's on land.

Really...

NOT...

fun.

Stupid gravity.

We don't have gravity in the sea. We float. We fly.

We flip our fins and get pretty far despite whatever that cartoon character said.

And I still have my voice... who needs a stupid prince anyway.

Fortunately I have friends: Kai and Genevieve.

Stupid gravity!

Get right back on that horse! Grandma always said.

Cool, this works...

...or not.

I finally got the hang of riding a slippery and somewhat sparkly sea horse...

We headed down the boardwalk that goes over the marsh. You can't walk in the marsh, it's too wet, I can't swim there, not enough water. Even a kayak won't float; too much grass.

The boardwalk goes over the marsh and into the woods.

We saw these lovely twisty pine trees.

The dark box with the window is so humans can watch birds and not disturb them.

Yeah, this is cool!

We went down another trail into the woods. The island isn't very far above the water, there's lots of water in the woods.

Tastes fresh, Genevieve says, so it must be from the rain.

We found another beach!

Oh, wait, remember Kai?

He got kind of bored...

"Let's go for a gallop." he says.

Riiiiiight.

Sure.

Uh huh.

It's like riding the waves!

We explored the island some more.

Oyster shells and pebbles rounded by sand and wind and water line the beach.

Foxes explored here before us, looking for rabbits, or maybe the eggs of diamondbacked terrapins.

Or a fish dropped by an osprey or eagle.

There are small wonders too...

We find another beach... full of driftwood and kind of scary.

Like it says on all of those old nautical charts: here there be dragons...

Fortunately for me... Kai has a plan.

So we hung out, roasted marshmallows, and watched the sun go down.

We found out gulls like to dance to mermaid songs.

Time to go home...
where there is no gravity...
no air, except Up...
no color...
and no fire.

Except when dragons make it.
