Chapter 17: Who is Xaldin?
New Orion Library (Restricted Section)
I was shocked when the woman in front of me told who she is. I took a few steps back from her and then I said to her.
"You...you're that sorceress who cursed Dominic?!"
"I am, it's nice to finally meet you in person, Amelia."
"You know who I am?"
"Of course, my friends are dragons and they tell me the latest gossip."
Lelia told me as she held my chin. I watched her squint her eyes to take a closer look at me.
"You know, you once remind me of someone that I once knew. She had beautiful golden hair, blue eyes and fair skin like yours."
"Who? Who is this woman that I remind you of?"
"Queen Elizabeth of Whitebrook."
I was surprised that she said something like that and then I asked her.
"Do I look like her?"
"Of course," Leila spoke with a smirk before pulling away from me.
"I'm surprised that Dominic hasn't noticed but, then again it has been many centuries so being an immortal does tend to mess with your mind a little bit and there might be some memories that you don't want to remember."
I looked at her up and down and asked her.
"I don't get it, why are you here? Dominic told me hasn't seen you in years."
Leila smiled at me and she said to me.
"Well, I came back because I needed to warn Dominic about a disturbance in the air and that disturbance came from a man who once went by the nickname The Devil Dragon."
"Xaldin, yes. I've heard about him and for some unknown reason, he's taken an interest in me. But, I keep trying to tell him that I'm already taken."
"Well, guys like Xaldin are the stubborn types and they never listen to reason. He took an interest in you because he knows that you look just like Elizabeth and he will do whatever it takes to get you."
I was shocked and scared at the same time and then Leila told me.
"Don't worry, your grandparents are safe. I knew Xaldin would have kidnapped them and used them to blackmail you so I placed a charm around your home so he didn't try anything."
I sighed in relief when she told me this and then she had that serious look on her face.
"However, I should warn you Xaldin will find a way to capture you and make you his."
"But why? why is he so desperate for a mate and why can't he look for someone else other than me?"
"It's not that simple. Finding a mate takes time and not a lot of dragons were able to find them so they forcefully take a woman and make them their mate even though their dragon spirits are against this idea. Xaldin is one of those dragons too and a greedy one to top it off."
"I know what you mean, Dominic told me Xaldin used to capture dragons and to tame them."
Leila frowned when I told them this and then she nodded her head.
"That's precisely what happened. Xaldin was thirsty for power, he didn't want to feel like he was second best and he wanted to get stronger, so he was able to take down Dominic. However, when he captured a Dragon Lord, he spoke in a dragon tongue one he couldn't understand until he realised what that Dragon Lord had done to him. He went on a rampage, killing enemy soldiers and destroying everything in his path."
Leila looked angry when she said this and I said to her.
"As the protector and keeper of the dragons, you felt angered by this didn't you?"
"I did, I planned to put an end Xaldin's wrath but, the Dragonslayers had beaten me to it. When this happened I thought that was the end of it. How wrong I was back then."
"Somehow, Xaldin was able to find a sorceress and use his or her power to create a clone of himself to make it look like the Dragonslayers had killed him but, the real one went into hiding for many years. I do not know who caused this but, I am doing my best to find out if another sorceress has gotten involved with him."
"But, why are you telling me this?"
Leila placed her hand on my shoulder and she told me.
"I knew Dominic would have kept this information hidden from you because he wanted to protect you. I figured it was for the best that I tell you, so you would know what you're up against but, don't you dare tell Dominic that you got this information from me. He hates me enough as it is."
"My lips are sealed."
Leila chuckled and then she asked me.
"But, I have to ask though, what brought you to the library? I thought you would be hanging out with Dominic by now."
"I was planning to but, my curiosity about Xaldin got the better of me and I wanted to find some more information about him. Like where he came from and how he became the man that we...well, you know today."
"Ever heard of the phrase 'Curiosity killed the cat?'"
"I do but, it's like you said, I need to know what I'm up against."
Leila sighed a little and then she smiled afterwards.
"All right, if you really want to know, you can find information about Xaldin and right here."
Leila clicked her fingers and then a black thick book appeared in front of me.
"Whoa, what is this?" I asked as I took the book in my hands.
"That is the information that was collected over the years that anyone who worked with Xaldin or who were against him. A few sorceresses and witches worked alongside him and they put their information in there."
I opened the book and then I started to read it. As I read through the book it was written by many sorceresses who knew the King personally or who worked for him.
It has been a month since the King was killed by his own son, Xaldin. I have never seen someone who was desperate for power and he would go to extreme lengths to get the throne. I have to be very careful about what I say to him, he has been known to have a short temper like the King of Whitebrook. However, I hope that someday, Karma will come back to bite him.
It's just as my sister Merida said, Karama has come back to bite him. The soldiers had come back from a hunt and they captured a dragon. This Dragon looked scary, in fact, I sensed a lot of powers coming from him and that tells me he might be a Dragon Lord. I went to see him in the dungeons and when I stared at those golden eyes, they scared me and it was like some kind of demon was staring into my soul.
I do not know what was going on at the time but, when the King asked me to watch him tame the monster, I tried to reason with him but, it was no use. Xaldin approached the monster and when he used his usual torture devices, the Dragon...I don't know...he raised his head and then he spoke something in Dragon tongue until Xaldin started screaming and shouting in pain. I couldn't stand around to watch and then I fled.
A few weeks passed since the incident with the King and after Zuri left, I had to take her place. The King looked different and I sensed something off about him. When I used my spells on him to find out what was wrong, I sensed a spirit within him and that spirit was a dragon. I asked Xaldin how this happened and he told me he tried to use his torture tools on him until he spoke in dragon tongue and then he felt something entering his body.
I concluded that whoever the Dragon Lord was, had the ability to pass his soul into a human body. The Dragon Lord probably thought he could pass his soul into Xaldin to curse him for all the pain and suffering the other dragons have gone through but, this plan obviously backfired because I sense a rise in power with this man and it's not good. As much as I hate to say this but, I hope those Dragonslayers hear about this and hopefully put a stop to him.
I flipped over another page but, most of the information was faded out since the book was that old.
"That's it? there's no any other info about this guy?"
"Sorry, that's all the pages I was able to save."
I gave the book back to Leila and then Aoi started hissing growling.
"What's the matter, buddy?" I asked him.
"Shh!" Leila hushed me after covering my mouth.
Leila pulled me and Aoi into the shadows before getting rid of the purple flames and then she used some kind of invisibility spell. I held Aoi close to my chest and then we spotted a man enter the library. He looked around and then Leila frowned and I knew that she recognized him.
"Shadow...he must have followed you here."
I mumbled and then she said to me.
"Don't worry, I should have known Xaldin sent someone to follow you."
"What do we do?" I whispered.
"Hold onto me."
"Just do it," She whispered to me.
I held onto her while Aoi sat on my shoulder and then I heard her mumble a spell before we found ourselves back at my house. I was surprised we made it back here and then Leila said to me.
"That was close."
"How'd you do that?"
"Teleportation spell, it comes in handy for emergencies."
"Thank you so much."
"You're welcome, I better get going. I need to find out who helped Xaldin and why."
"Can I help?"
Leila looked at me surprised when I asked her this. She then smiled at me and said to me.
"As much as I appreciate it but, no. It's too risky, I can't let you put yourself in danger."
"All right, but, don't you want to come inside and have a cup of coffee before you go?"
"Thanks but, no thanks. I really gotta go."
"Okay, I'll see you around then?"
"Sure, oh and say hi to Dominic for me."
I nodded my head before Leila teleported away from me, leaving behind some black smoke. I smiled a little and then Aoi sat on my shoulder and I told him.
"You know, even though she cursed Dominic, she did it to punish him but, she's not so bad once you get to know her, right Aoi?"
Aoi purred in response and then we headed into the house after he hid in my backpack. Once I got inside, I called out to my grandparents.
"Welcome back, Amelia," Grandmother spoke with a smile on her face.
I noticed that she has a tray of not three but four cups hot chocolate. I was surprised by this and I asked her.
"Grandmother, is Dominic here?"
"No, a male friend of yours is here."
I frowned angrily and I mumbled.
"If it's Shay, I am going to kill him."
I walked into the living room but, the guest is not Dominic or Shay, it's Xaldin. I was surprised by this and then Grandmother said to me.
"Your friend Xaldin dropped by not too long ago. He arrived here ten minutes ago before you showed up. He came over to see you but, I told him you were around since you were at the library so, he decided to stick around until you got back."
'What's going on? how did he get in here? I thought Leila told me that she placed a barrier around the house to stop him from coming in here so how did he get here?'
