Chapter 6: Meeting The Cursed Dragon King

Whitebrook Castle
Amelia

The next day, Grandfather and I headed to Whitebrook castle with our new friend, Aoi. I’m still not sure where he came from, but he is kinda cute. We got to the entrance and then the security guard recognised my Grandfather since he used to be a security guard a few years ago before I was born. We arrived in the entrance hall and then we saw the tour guide, Harry, an old friend of my Grandfather.

“Johnny! it’s good to see you!”

“It’s good to see you again, Harry,” Grandfather said as he and Harry hugged each other tightly.

Harry looked at me and he smiled at me.

“My eyes must be deceiving me but, is that little Amelia over there?”

“It sure is,” Grandfather spoke with a smile.

Harry laughed and then he took my hand and he said to me.

“I don’t believe it, you’ve grown up, come turn around let me have a good look at you.”

I spun around and then Harry commented.

“She’s the spitting image of Maria, hm?” Harry noticed Aoi sitting on my shoulder.

“Where did you find him?”

“Oh, my new friend, I found him yesterday at the castle gardens.”

“You did?”

I nodded my head and then Harry attempted to pet Aoi’s head but, he started growling at him. Harry pulled his hand away and that took me by surprise.

“What’s wrong with you?” I asked Aoi and then Grandfather spoke up.

“Oh that’s right, I almost forgot. The twin-tailed foxes are known to be very protective of their masters and it looks like Aoi is one of them.”

I was surprised by this and then I gently stroked Aoi’s fur.

“Aoi, it’s all right. Harry is a friend.”

Aoi stopped growling and then he jumped onto Harry’s shoulder.

“Whoa! hahaha! well, you’re a friendly now aren’t you?” Harry said as he gently stroked Aoi’s fur.

“Where did you say you found him?”

“I found him in the castle gardens yesterday. My classmates and I took a field trip here with our lecturer and that’s my best friend and I found him. I didn’t know what to do with Aoi so I figured I bring him home with me and tell Grandfather about him.”

“And now you’re here huh? what can I do to help you two?”

“Harry, do you remember where the King used to keep his pets like Aoi here?”

Harry thought for a moment and then he remembered something.

“He used to keep them in the throne room where their royals used to visit the King and take their pick with the twin-tailed foxes. You can try there and see if Aoi’s got family there.”

I nodded my head and we were about to leave until Harry stopped us for a moment.

“Oh, and a bit of warning, stay away from the danger zones. They’re forbidden and they’re dangerous right now.”

“Understood, let’s go, Amelia.”

“All right, coming,” I said as I caught up with Grandfather.

We walked through the hallways for a while and after a few twists and turns, we found the throne room. We looked around and it was amazing and then I looked at the throne. I approached the throne and I glanced at the banner above us. The banner was blue and it has a white dragon in the middle

“That banner represents the Whitebrook’s army and the king’s first dragon kill.”

Grandfather explained to me and then I placed Aoi on the ground.

“Okay buddy, go ahead and find your family.”

Aoi didn’t move, he just stared at me and he sat down on the ground. I was confused by this and then Grandfather said to me.

“Give him time, Aoi is probably trying to work out where they are.”

“Okay.”

Grandfather and I looked around the throne room for a while and then we went into the different rooms that were nearby. We went into the library and we were impressed when we saw the old library books. I spotted a portrait hanging on the wall and then I approached it to get a better look. Grandfather did the same and he smiled a little.

“King Dominic, once a king and a dragonslayer and then he became a cursed King.”

“Grandfather, do you think the King is still alive? I mean after hearing the tale about Leila the sorceress cursing him for all eternity, it might be true.”

“You might be right, after all, Aoi wouldn’t be here right...now?” Grandfather spoke as he looked down and he noticed Aoi had disappeared.

I looked around and then Grandfather said to me.

“Amelia, where did he go?”

“I don’t know, he was right behind me when we came here.”

“Let’s go and look for him, I’ll head back to the entrance hall and see if Harry has seen anything, will you be all right to search up here on your own?”

“I’ll be fine, I’ll call you once I find him.”

“All right and be careful.”

Grandfather told me before he headed back downstairs. I walked through the corridors while calling out for Aoi and so far, I couldn’t see him. Just then, I spotted him running away from me and he turned a corner.

“Aoi! come back!”

I chased after him and when I turned a corner, he was gone. I was confused by this at first until I saw Aoi poking his head out of a door which I didn’t see earlier. Aoi purred at me before heading inside the room. I followed after him and when I did, the door behind me closed on its own. I figured it was some stupid prank but, when I tried to touch the door handle, I felt a solid wall. I ran my fingers over the wall and I patted my palm against it a few times but, nothing.

“Grandfather! Grandfather! can you hear me?!” I called out to him but, he didn’t answer.

I got my phone and I tried to call him but, I couldn’t get a signal. I looked around and it was pitch black so, I turned on the flashlight on my phone and I followed Aoi since he might know a way out of here. I went down the stairs and Aoi kept looking over at me to make sure I was still following him.

As I walked through the tunnel, it started to get brighter and I spotted some torches on the wall. I turned off the flashlight and I looked at Aoi.

“Aoi, where are you taking me?”

Aoi purred at me and then he ran ahead of me. I chased after him and then we got to the exit. I moved the overgrown shrubs out of the way and the light got in my eyes. I used the back of my hand to cover my eyes and once it died down a little, I was shocked when I saw the landscape.

The land was covered in grassland and mountains. There is a crystal blue lake filled with different kinds of birds and some strange creatures I’ve never seen before. I slowly walked out of the bushes and I looked around some more. I can’t get over how beautiful the flowers and the landscape was. I spotted some strange creatures and a few of them were the mythical creatures that I’ve read about in the books but, never in my life that I was able to see them with my own eyes.

Just then, Aoi ran over to me and then he tugged on my trouser leg. I followed after him and there were more twin-tailed foxes and they were in different colours. I smiled at the little guys and then I knelt on the ground. The little foxes ran over to me and they nudged their little noses on my arms and one of them tried to climb onto my shoulders making me laugh.

“They seem to like you,” A voice spoke up from behind me.

I turned around and I saw a man. He has dirty blonde hair, green eyes and tanned skin. His outfit consists of a trenchcoat jacket, a dark grey shirt, leather pants and brown boots. I couldn’t stop staring at this man’s eyes and then he smiled at me.

“U-um...” I stammered and I was not sure what to say to him.

“Don’t be afraid of me, my dear. I won’t hurt you.”

The handsome man came over to me and then he offered his hand to me. I took his hand and he helped me onto my feet.

“Who are you and where am I?”

“This is my kingdom. I call it Krotolas. It’s a place where all of the mythical creatures like the twin-tailed foxes where they can live in peace and hide away from society. I am their leader.”

“Wow, but, how on earth did you get all of the-”

My sentence was interrupted when I heard the sound of a roar from the sky. I jumped in fright and for a moment the sky darkened and when I looked up, I saw a large lizard with wings and I realised it was a dragon. I was shocked by this and then the dragon landed next to us. The dragon was ice blue and its eyes were golden.

I hid behind the blonde-haired man's back and he started chuckling.

“Calm down, Axel is a friend of mine.”

“Friend?!”

I shouted in a shocked tone until mist suddenly appeared around the dragon and then it disappeared. I peered over the blonde-haired man’s shoulder and I saw a silver-haired man appear from the mist and he wasn’t wearing clothes. I blushed bright red and then the blonde-haired man covered my eyes.

“Axel! for god sake! put some clothes on! we’ve got a lady here!”

“Oh sorry! my bad... wait, a lady?!”

“Axel!”

I heard the blonde-haired man shouted. I waited for a few moments until my eyes were finally uncovered.

“Sorry, you had to see that.”

“I, uh, didn’t see anything,” I told him.

I looked at the blonde-haired man and I asked him.

“Was that man...a dragon?”

“Uh, yeah, I forgot to mention we’ve got dragons here and yes, they can transform into humans. It’s all because of Leila’s-”

The blonde-haired man stopped talking and I knew what he was gonna say.

“Leila? as in the sorceress who cursed the King of Whitebrook castle?”

“How did you know about that?”

“It’s not just me, everyone in Orion city knows about the legend but, others, they think it’s a myth.”

The blonde-haired man smirked at me and he said to me.

“And do you think it’s a myth?”

“After what I witnessed? no, and besides, I’ve always believed the story about the cursed King is real including my grandfather.”

“I see, by the way, I never got your name.”

“My name is Amelia, what’s yours?”

The blonde-haired man looked away for a moment almost as if he wasn’t sure whether to tell me but, he smiled at me afterwards.

“I went by many names for centuries but, there is one name that I never have forgotten. My name is Dominic, I was once known as the King of Whitebrook castle."
