"Maverick what does she mean by that?", he just glared at the Beta female for a few seconds before he turned his attention to me.
"She thinks your pack was involved in the attack", he replied. I think back to the night he had told me about his past. He had not known that the Beta had moved into my pack from another one.
She doesn't know my pack wasn't involved with the attack.
"Her pack wasn't involved in the attack?", the Beta asked with a confused expression. My mate nodded.
"Her Beta has moved to the pack twenty years ago", he said. Realisation drowned on Beta's face. His eyes flickered to me for a second he averted his gaze to his mate.
"Baby apologised to the Luna", he said in a soothing voice a mother uses on her baby. She looked at him pleadingly but when he didn't budge she sighed and turned to me.
"Forgive me", she spat out venomously. I nodded stiffly. Honestly, this woman is testing my patience. And I'm starting to get annoyed with her.
"Well, we should get back to eating. Luna, I have grilled this meat perfectly for you", Chelsi said to lighten the mood and thrusted roasted meat in my hand. Which had me asking...
"Do you guys not use any dishes?", I asked as I had not seen them eating on a plate or using any spoon or anything. I remember the time Maverick had ate breakfast with me. When he had used a fork and spoon, his hands were shaking like he has not used them in a while. He had also looked around at some of the kitchen appliances in wonder.
"We don't have any?", Kelvin said with an awkward expression.
"Why?", I blurted out without thinking. They all stiffen at my question.
"Because our houses were burned down to ashes and we were left to survive in the wilderness by ourselves", Beta female sneered. I looked down, feeling bad for them. My heart squeezed painfully in my chest as I imagined their baby selves fending for themselves. They were all alone, exposed to the danger of rogues and hunters.
"I'm sorry", I said. Beta female scoffed lowly but didn't say anything. The silence was filled with awkwardness. I stiffly finished the meat provided by the sweet. It was hard for me to swallow the meat cooked without any spices but I swallow down everything as I was hungry. I had to keep my wolf side full all the time if I want to survive.
I like meat. My wolf butted in. That is no secret, I smirked internally.
Are we good? I asked my wolf indicating our fight earlier.
I'm sorry. She whispered.
For? I raised an eyebrow. My wolf rarely apologise so it surprised me she said the word "sorry" and that too so softly.
I was hard on you earlier when I should have been explained to you softer. She whimpered, nuzzling at the barrier to show how much she is sorry. I sighed.
Why did you get angry so suddenly, that's not like you. I said. She is such a calm wolf and whenever she has gotten angry it was always on others. She has never argued with me like this before so it has surprised me.
I was afraid if I let you overthink you'll reject him. Whenever we are near mate I feel so much sadness oozing out of him. I don't want to cause him any more pain. As his mate, we must mend his broken self. She explained with tiny whimpers. Bile rose in my throat. Our wolves side feels all the emotions more than us and if a wolf has met its other half they can feel each others feeling all the time while our human side can only feel it when their emotions are highlighted.
Why did you not told me before? I asked softly. I can't imagine how much trauma has been caused to my mate in his childhood to make him drown in so much sadness.
You already had so much to deal with that I didn't want to worry you more. She replied.
Thank you for telling me now. I said and added after a few seconds. Do you have any idea we can plan a surprise for our mate to make him happy?
My wolf perked up at the idea, showing me some mental image of cute night dates under the moonlight. My wolf is so cute that if she were another person I'd have pinched her cheeks.
I like all your ideas, let's combined them all and plan a cute date for us. I said, already planning the date in my head. I know a perfect place for our date. I just need to go back to my pack to prepare everything.
"Here, have some more", Jenna spoke for the first time, handing me some more food.
"Thank you", I smiled at her. Her cheeks tinted red and she bowed down, avoiding my eyes. Ah, so she's a shy one, I thought bemused. It would be fun to tease her.
"Why are your cheeks red?", I teased in a low voice. The colour on her cheeks darkened.
"She is always like that, getting all shy but not on a battlefield. You do not want to mess with her when you're in a fight with her", Beta Tray explained. The thought that this meek, overly cute and shy girl is someone dangerous brought a smile to my face.
"I want to see her fight one day", I said then remembered something.
"Was she there during the attack last night?", I asked.
"No, she wasn't", Kelvin replied.
"Luna, are there any beautiful lady in your pack that'll like me?", Phoenix asked making a cute pout and a dreamy look on his beautiful face. I chuckled at his expression before replying.
"Yes, there are but why are you asking when there are three beautiful ladies in your pack?", I asked pointing towards Beta female, Liya, Chelsi and Jenna.
"Beautiful? This?", Liya scoffed pointing towards the long scar that is covering almost half of her face. My smile faltered seeing the pain on her face.
"Yes, you are beautiful", I said with a firm voice, hoping she realises I'm serious. She didn't reply just stood up and left with a dejected shoulder. When her mate Tray stood up to follow her I stopped him.
"Wait, I will go after her", I said standing up.
"You sure?", his face held uncertainty. He must be worried we will fight once again.
"Yes, let me talk to her", uncertainly he nodded his head. I turned in the direction she went to. Silently I followed behind her, seeing her shoulder shook as she sobbed. My own eyes watered feeling the pain emerging from her.
We walked in silence for a while until we reached the forest line.
"Why did you follow me?", she asked in a hoarse voice. I stood beside her, peeking at the wide forest from above. The trees looked tiny in front of this forest. It is almost unreal that the trees are so giant in this forest while the forest that surrounds it looks like a kid in front of a mother.
"Just wanted to talk to you", I replied as I looked around. One side of this forest is surrounded by another forest while the other half is protected by rocky mountains.
"About?", she asked as she turned to me. My eyes got drowned to the long mark on her face. She tried to hide it with her hands but I caught her hands.
"Don't. It's a sign that proves you are a strong warrior so don't hide it. If it makes you feel better it enhances your beauty", I said smiling at her. She brought her hands down and stared at me hard.
"I still don't like you", she grumbled. I chuckled at her.
"I know that, you've made it quite clear", I said hinting towards our first and second meeting.
"About that", she scratched the back of her ear. "I'm sorry, it was uncalled for. I just don't like any stranger near us", she said. I nodded in understanding. We fell into silence for a while before she broke it.
"Don't hurt our Alpha. He has been through a lot", she started. She licked her lips and sighed before she continued. "He may not have let it on but he needs you", she turned to me, leaving me stunned.
I squealed like an excited teenager before I cleared my throat.
"Yes, he needs you. It is not my place to tell you this but I'm saying this to warn you. I'll kill you if you ever hurt him", she glared at me and I have no doubt she will not follow through with her threat.
"What makes you think I'll ever hurt him?", I asked, somewhat irked that she thinks I'll hurt Maverick, my mate.
"I don't know you nor do I know if you are someone we can trust", she replied straightforwardly. I nodded because I know trust is not earned in a day and in her case I know it'll take me a while to earn her trust.
