It was the weekend and this weekend was the most important day of my life because I was in the Women’s Fencing Competition and I was in the final round. I stood there wearing my protective gear and I watched my opponent through my mask and we stared at each other with determined looks on our faces. Neither one of us wanted to back down.
I held my fencing sword in my right hand while I had my other hand behind my back.
“En Garde!” The commentator shouted. “Allez!!”
My opponent charged forward and then I dodged her thrust before I thrust my sword and it landed on her side. We stopped for a moment before repeating this until I won. We shook hands and then we parted ways. I took off my mask and I shook my brown hair out of the way and then my best friend, Lily ran over to me.
“Woohoo!! well done bud! that’s another gold medal!”
“Thanks, Lily, is he here?”
Lily looked away from me and she sighed a little.
“He didn’t come did he?” I asked with a frown on my face.
“I’m sorry, Eve, I kept calling him but, it went straight to voice mail and he wasn’t responding to my text messages.”
“Tch, I should have known.”
I grumbled before heading to the changing rooms. Once I got changed into my casual wear which was a black beanie with the Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag symbol on the front, black hoodie, a grey top, black skinny jeans and canvas shoes. I grabbed my canvas bag and I left the changing rooms. Lily was waiting for me and then we walked home together.
“Sorry your old man couldn’t make it, I thought for sure he would have at least came to see you win a gold medal today.”
“Ugh, it’s fine, I am used to it.”
“Doesn’t it get a bit lonely for you? I mean, with your old man working 24/7, he hardly pays any attention to you since your mother died.”
“I told you, I’m fine with it. Now can please drop the subject? I wanna get something to eat.”
“Fair enough, let’s get to the usual place so you can have your nose stuck in a book, again.”
I laughed when Lily said this and then we headed to the cafe. Well, when I say cafe, it’s also a bookstore with a cafe to go along with it. Once we got there, I ordered a strawberry cheesecake with a cup of tea while Lily got a chocolate sundae with a chocolate milkshake. I got my favourite book, Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. Lily got her favourite Assassin’s Creed novel out and she said to me.
“You’re reading Stranger Tides again? don’t you read anything else other than books about pirates?”
“Not really, I always find them so fascinating and the adventures about them are so amazing. Besides, it’s not like you’ve got any room to talk, you’re reading Assassins’ Creed Black Flag and you’re addicted to it.”
Lily giggled when I said this. Oh yeah, here’s a fun fact; Lily and I are best friends because we love to fence, perform parkour and we’re both nerds when it comes to our favourite video games and comic books but commonly, we love Assassin’s Creed and other fantasy games and novels. Her favourite books are Black Flag and Brotherhood because she loves the characters Ezio and Captain Kenway.
“Speaking of Assassin’s Creed, did you get the new book?”
“As a matter of fact...” I went into my canvas bag and I got the book which was Odessy. “I bought it yesterday and I finished reading it too.”
“Here you go,” I gave the book to her and Lily smiled happily when she saw the cover.
“This is so cool! I’ve heard from John that this one is a female leading role, was it good?”
“It was, I love it when the authors put a female leading role into the books, it goes to show that not all of the men have to be the heroes.”
Lily nodded her head in agreement when I said this. We continued to chat about our favourite books and what books we should read. Whenever I’m with Lily it feels like I’ve got a sister at my side and whenever we meet up in the coffee shop like this, it feels like we’re having a book club except we’re the only members.
We left the shop that late afternoon and then we headed home. I sighed a little when I got to the empty apartment that you call my home. I hardly see my dad since he works at the hospital all day and all night. I went into my room and I dumped my stuff onto the bed and I sat down at my desk to work on my homework. I looked at the family photo of me and my parents together and I sighed sadly.
“I miss you, mother...” I whispered before I continued to finish my Maths homework.
My phone started buzzing and then I looked at the reminder and it was telling me I’ve got that school trip tomorrow at the museum. I sighed a little before I turned off the reminder and setting my alarm. Once my homework was done, I laid down on the bed and I looked at the movie posters of Pirates of the Caribbean and I sighed a little.
“I wish I could get away from here and go on amazing adventures with the pirates...” I mumbled before drowsiness took over.
The next day, it was the school trip and Lily was my partner. We walked through the hallways while admiring the weapons, the armour etc. Eventually, we got to the area where they kept the paintings of famous pirates and their ships including the famous black beard. We looked at the paintings for a few moments before Lily sighed a little.
“I wish we can go there, I mean can you imagine? sailing on the seas, viewing the dolphins jumping out of the water, fighting the storms-”
“And fighting enemies?” I asked her with a grin.
Lily nodded her head in agreement.
“Oh please!” Courtney, the biggest snob and diva in the school, told us.
“Why would anyone go on a crazy adventure with pirates, which by the way are not real.”
“Hi Courtney, how are you?” I asked in a sarcastic attitude.
“I’m fine thanks, loser. I don’t know why you two have an interest in those video games or those stupid novels.”
“They are not stupid!” Lily shouted.
“Don’t rise to it,” I told her before I got a little surprise for Courtney.
“Oh yeah, Courtney, I heard you like those fashion magazines, so I got the latest edition.”
Courtney looked at me surprised before I gave her the rolled-up magazine from my bag which contained a little something for her.
“Oh, you did you? well, I suppose my crew and I can leave you alone for the day, seeing as how you’ve been so generous to give me this.”
Courtney spoke with a smirk on her face while Lily looked at me with a confused expression until I pressed my finger on my lips hush her. Courtney unrolled the magazines and when she did a rubber spider popped out which caused Courtney to scream in terror. Lily and I burst out laughing and then we made a run for it.
“You two are so dead when I get my hands on you!!”
We escaped into one of the rooms and then I closed the door behind me. Lily and I were hysterically and then Lily said to me.
“Oh man! that was hilarious!”
“Did you see Courtney’s face?! she was like...” I mimicked her expression and that made Lily laugh even harder.
“Oh man, Evie, that was the best prank ever.”
Evie and I high five each other before looking at the room we escaped in.
“Where did we go?” Lily told us as we looked around.
“You’re in the hallway that contains the legendary pirate’s legacy,” A voice spoke up out of nowhere.
Lily shouted in fright and hides behind me while I stood in a fighting stance but it was only the janitor. Lily and I sighed in relief before I spoke up.
“What are you trying to do old man? give us a heart attack?”
“Forgive me, it’s not every day I get to see tourists or visitors come in here.”
“Why? this stuff looks amazing,” I told the old man as Lily and I looked at the swords and the ships that were in the bottles.
“That’s because not everyone has heard of the legacy and the legend of Blackmane, the pirate who was once known as the King of the ocean.”
“King of the ocean? oh yeah! I remember now, wasn’t he famous for being rivals with Blackbeard?” I asked him.
“Why yes, he was.”
Lily was surprised that I knew this and she asked me.
“How did you know that?”
“My Grandfather told me, Blackmane or rather Captain Caspian Barlow once owned the legendary ship called The Neptune’s Strumpet. He was famous for being rivals with Blackbeard but, there were no records of this because most of the pages of the journal that a crewman kept were all ruined and old."
"Really? what else do you know about him?"
"Grandfather told me that he's known for being ruthless in combat but, there was another side to him that some people know of him, he does have a 'gentler' side to him. He was loyal, he showed mercy and he was generous, basically, he was like Robin Hood only a pirate version of him."
Lily looked impressed and the old Janitor chuckled.
"You're well informed of this, young lady."
"I have a very weird obsession with Pirate novels, films and video games about them."
"Oh? well, since you've got an interest in pi, there's something I would like to show you two."
We went into another room which contained a large painting of the ocean and in the distance, you can see The Neptune's Strumpet.
"I've seen this painting before, an unknown artist painted this at one of the docks and even though the ship was in the distance, he still thought it was breathtaking to watch the battle that was about to take place."
"You are indeed correct Miss, take your time and enjoy your viewing."
The Janitor told us before he closed the door behind. Lily looked at me and she said to me.
"Well, he was something. A little creepy but, at least I've learnt something new."
"I know, come on, let's see what else they've got."
I said as I looked at the glass cabinet that contained the weapons that once belonged to Captain Barlow. Just then, Lily spoke up.
"Is it my imagination or does it look like the waves in the painting are moving to you?"
I looked at her confused before I looked at the painting and she wasn't imagining things the waves looked like they were moving. I rubbed my eyes and then I looked back at the painting until seawater spilt into the room which flooded the place.
"Ahh! what's happening?!" Lily shouted.
"I don't know, stay close!!" I shouted as I swam towards Lily since she couldn't swim.
I held onto her for dear life until we went underwater. Right then and there, we both knew that something was about to happen that was going to change our lives forever.
