Chapter 30

It's starting to get dark outside, which means Jax will be finishing work soon. The days seem to drag on when I'm not with him. Sometimes he can have lunch with me, but most of the time he is too busy and wants to get everything done earlier so he can spend the evening with me. Today is one of those days.

Axton and I are now onto season three of Riverdale, as we have binged watched most of it throughout the afternoon. Ax continues to keep smelling the air and worry washes over his face, but I don’t know why. Strange wolf.

I also notice that Axton keeps touching his neck where dark-coloured bruises are littered about. I feel... conflicted. On one hand, I am concerned for my friend and am worried that someone is hurting him like what happened to me, but on the other hand, I know what it's like to not want to talk about pained experiences. Who would do that to him?

Deciding to go for the option that will help my friend, I decide to ask Axton straight out. “What is that on your neck?” Ax goes as red as a beetroot and a huge grin makes its way onto his face. Why would he be smiling when they look painful?

“It’s... a love bite.” He says fidgeting about.

“A what what?”

“A love bite also known as a hickey.” When he notices my confused expression, he says with a grin, “Don't worry about it, you will find out soon enough." Still confused, I just let it go. Would Jax give me one of those painful things? No, stop it. He would never hurt me. Maybe it’s not painful if Axton is smiling when talking about it.

My insides start to turn to jelly which only means one thing. Jax is coming. Five seconds later, the door to the living room opens, and Jax walks in with a huge smile on his face. We keep the living room door closed so that I don't bump into pack members and have a meltdown, and they can come into the packhouse for anything they need. It's a win-win.

Jax starts sniffing the air and he suddenly looks concerned. He comes rushing over to me and holds me at arm's length and checks me over. "Why do you smell of blood? Are you ok? Are you hurt?" Jax glances over at Axton and I notice that Jax's wolf is starting to show. He is angry. Surprisingly it doesn't scare me, the only feeling I get is the need to comfort him. Jax thinks Axton has hurt me. I tug gently on his arm but Jax is too focused on glaring daggers at Axton. I cup Jax's face and force him to look at me.

"He didn't do anything. I'm okay," I say with confidence. Now is not the time to stutter or think of how to word my speech. Deciding that the best option was to get Axton away from Jax, I say, "Axton, it's okay, you can go. I will see you tomorrow." Axton glances warily at Jax, but follows my advice and leaves the room, closing the door quietly behind him.

Jax clenches his jaw clearly not happy that Axton has left in one piece, but says nothing. "He didn't do anything. I woke up... blood on my underwear. Maybe I hurt myself... without knowing. Axton did nothing," I try to emphasize. Jax seems deep in thought before a lightbulb goes off in his head.

"That might be your period. It's a human thing. I will look into it, don't stress about it, baby. I'll sort it out." Jax still has concern written all over his eyes, but I know he is putting on a brave face as to not scare me, but the sight of blood doesn't phase me anymore. I am so used to seeing it, that it seems normal, but it shouldn't be that way and I am now realizing that. He steps closer to me and rests his forehead against mine, and we both wrap our arms around each other tightly. "I was so worried," he whispers.

"I'm okay," I reassure him because I truly am. I have Jax in my arms, what else could I possibly need.

"I love you," Jax says with nothing but warmth in his eyes. And that's when it dawns on me, I love him too.

I'm on my way to the kitchen to grab some breakfast before I head to my office, but stop when the smell of death is making its way up my nose. I follow the scent to the front door of the packhouse and swing the door open. I glance about before looking to the ground and see a brown box closed, with flies flapping about. This doesn't look good.

I lengthen my claws and slice down the middle of the cardboard. Inside is a dead deer's head, staring blankly ahead. This is an act of war. Aaron growls loudly and checks our surroundings seeing if there is any threat.

I mindlink Dimitri to come meet me, and twenty seconds later I hear him come barreling down the stairs. "What's that moon goddess awful sm...oh."

"Dimitri, deal with this. I want it tested for any DNA as to who the hell did this and how they managed to get onto my lands, without being detected," I growl in anger. I'm going to lose my shit with whoever was on border patrol last night. "Meet me in my office at nine, and try to keep this quiet, I don’t want the pack worried." It is currently six, so I have time to rip the people who were on patrol a new arsehole.

I make my way to my office and turn on my laptop. So many questions cramp my mind. How the fuck did this happen? How did they get onto my land? Why would they do this? Who did this? I have a hint of who it is to the last question.

I check the schedule of border control from last night and there were forty members in total who were on watch, including rotations. This is gonna take a while.

After two and a half hours of interviewing I found out that during the change in shifts that one of the members was late because he overslept. This member, Riley, has never caused me trouble. He has always been good at his job, so I am tempted to think it was just a small fuck up, but you can never be too cautious. He is off border patrol until he proves he is trustworthy. The most loyal ones are always the ones to hurt you. It is not worth risking every pack member's life, especially Hayley's, just so he can be on duty.

Sometime after, there is a knock on my door and I know it's Dimitri. "Come in." After Dimitri closes the door I gesture him to take a seat in front of me and fill him in on how this mess happened.

"Riley is a good guy, but I understand, I would have done the same thing." It's good to know my Beta agrees with me. "The results from the tests will be ready tomorrow morning. I will fill you in as soon as I have them...Also, rumors are spreading about what was found this morning, Alpha. They know it's a warning sign. I tried my best, but you know how quick gossip spreads within the pack. Everyone is worried."

"We all feel it. A war is coming, and fast," I sigh.

"Everyone pair up. Today we are going to focus on fighting in your human form. It is always useful to use your human energy before exerting your wolf energy, this way you will have more of an advantage. Your objective is to pin your opponent to the ground for five seconds. Understood?" A unison of 'Yes, Alpha' is shouted, and then everyone spreads out and starts training. I thought it was a good idea to up the training days so everyone is more prepared. I have no doubt in my mind that we will win against any enemy, but I don't want any loss of life, and that is the hardest thing to prevent.

After my briefing with Dimitri earlier this morning, I sensed Hayley was awake and went to find her to calm my wolf down. I was shaking with rage and was struggling to contain it. I needed my mate. She is my rock that keeps me grounded.

When I found her in the living room, watching some program she seemed just as antsy as I was. She must have been able to sense my discomfort through the bond. Axton gave us some space as I held my mate and calmed my wolf down. She seemed to know how to calm me down without any instructions, it was like instinct. She knows me.

The smell of blood once again filled my nose and I made a mental note to ask someone to get Hayley some toiletries. I did some research on human periods last night before I went to sleep, as to what the best way to help Hayley was. I think that pads will be better and I will stock up on some pain killers so she is not in discomfort. I know a little bit about human periods already, but I don't know enough to help Hayley, so I will have to do some more research later tonight. Female wolves have heat, not periods so I'm a little bit out of my depth, but when it comes to Hayley, I'd do anything.

As I was leaving, Axton started to teach Hayley how to tie her shoelaces. How cute. I like the fact that Hayley can rely on Axton, and I like it even more, knowing that he now has a mate.

I am proud to be Alpha of such a strong pack. We have come a long way, and we will be able to go even further with Hayley by our side. She doesn't realize how strong she is, she is a fighter. My fighter. The thought of Hayley brings a small to my face that I just can't get rid of. Everything about her means the world to me. It's the little things that draw me to her. The way her eyes still shine despite the pain she has experienced. The way she blushes when I come out of the shower in only a towel. Everything about her stuns me.

I hear Hayley's thoughts when I'm near her, but I don't know what she is thinking when I am away. I only am able to sense her emotions. I wonder if she ever thinks about me, like the way I think about her. I try to be innocent, but sometimes it is extremely difficult. Every morning, I wake up with her perky ass pressed up against my front, and let's just say it is hard for my thoughts not to wander. I would never do anything Hayley isn't ready for, I respect her with everything I have.

I and Hayley have continued with our training sessions and we are due another one. She has made amazing progress and the way she smiles when she thinks she is beating the shit out of me, makes me think she is happy with her progress also. We could have a session tomorrow. Times like those mean a lot to me. Watching her get stronger and stronger is amazing to witness. From when I first met her, she is completely different. She was beautiful back then, but it looked like she had no life left in her eyes. She looked defeated. And now, she is this radiant woman who is strong and doesn't let her past affect her. She makes me want to be the best version of myself for her.

I've been wondering lately whether Hayley would like pups with me. Obviously when she is ready, but I can't seem to shake the feeling that she would be the best mother and shower our pup with love. I guess time will tell.

Pulling myself back to the future and away from my gorgeous mate, I start to help members to improve on better postures. On ways to have an advantage over their opponent. They are not completely clueless when it comes to fighting in human form, but we mostly train in wolf form, as it is our strongest weapon.

Training is over and I had a quick shower before asking Hayley to join me in my office, just to have her company. She didn't seem to mind.

Lately, I have been looking into human traditions, and what they do when they fall in love with someone. What they do is get married which means you combine your souls not just legally, but emotionally as well. As Hayley is human, I believe it is important that I and my mate can combine in every way possible, meaning we should get married. Humans would believe that our relationship is too early to marry, but to that I say, fuck it. These are different circumstances and I know that I will never love anyone other than Hayley. She is my everything. I managed to sneak off the pack grounds yesterday without Hayley knowing and buy a ring to propose with. Hayley isn't the type to be picky, but I can't help the bundle of nerves settling in the pit of my stomach over whether she will like the ring or not.

Deciding that there is no time like the present, I head over to Hayley who is snuggled up on the sofa with a blanket, reading a book. As she glances up at me, I lower onto one knee and take a deep breath. My hands are shaking as I pull the ring out of my pocket, and open the lid, exposing the glistening ring. I stare up into my beautiful mate's eyes, and ask, “Hayley, my love, my Sunshine, my soulmate, will you marry me?”

Silence fills the air, and awkwardness quickly follows. Hayley glances down at the ring then back up to my eyes with a confused look on her face. "What does 'marry' me?" she asks bewildered. Of course, she doesn't know what it means, how did I not think of that? You idiot.

"It means we are bound together forever, that I will love you for eternity. It is a sign of love and passion and everything that I already feel for you. As it is a human celebration, not only werewolves but humans as well, will now know that you belong to me and that I belong to you. It means we become one in the human world, and as you are human, I thought that it would be a good idea... I want to love you in every way I can." A shocked expression settles on her face as she realizes what I am asking her. "So... will you marry me?" I ask, holding my breath.
