"But don't you want to get closer with him? Like at all?"
"I don't know. I like this kind of pace. I don't feel like he expects anything of me, we just get to get to know each other better and—"
"You know I see why he thought locking you in a room with him to try and progress your relationship was necessary. Maddy how many relationships have you actually seen?"
"Uh I don't know. Not many though. I don't like areas with many humans nearby because that's where the slave traders and whatever else are most concentrated and I don't like getting close to other people because death is so common... I guess I just don't know how to be in a relationship. No wonder Xavier is getting a bit frustrated."
"No Maddy it's not like that. He loves you—"
"But he doesn't like our progress. I have never had many friends, or really any friends. The word friends is non existent amongst street rats like me. You don't get committed. Everyone is just an ally, competition or someone to step on to survive. Before Xavier no one tried to get to know me. I have only truly liked one or two people before and by liked I mean that as tolerated them enough to be able to classify them as whatever comes just before friends. I don't know how to be in a romantic relationship with him," Maddy said, whispering the last sentence.
"Maddy you should tell him that. He will understand."
"I doubt it."
"He will still accept it. But it really explains why your first attempt at making friends went so wrong."
"Yeah I ended up nearly dying and they did die."
"If it helps I don't have many friends either."
"You know when you get a mate. I am going to torment you like you torment me," Maddy declared smugly.
"You wish. I would probably be so boastful about my mate that there will be no way to embarrass me."
"Oh yeah? I can't wait to see you turn into a blushing pile of mush," Maddy laughed.
"HEY! Get the idea out of your head right now!!"
"No way! I need to learn to paint because the picture inside my head has to be shown to all!"
"ABSOLUTELY NO WAY!!!!"
"If you even dare, I'll get someone to paint you blushing as well then!"
"Won't make a difference. I think Xavier has already planned to do that—" Maddy's hands covered her mouth.
"Oh this is going to be good, especially since you are like a little parrot that can easily be made to talk," Lily smirked.
"I am n- oh who am I kidding... we both know that is totally true," Maddy sighed.
"Spill, what did he do that made you blush."
"I don't exactly remember. He did so many things to make me blush that day alone. It was during or just after the movie though. He said something along the lines of wanting to have me painted blushing. I don't know whether or not he was joking though. Sometimes it is hard to tell."
"He better not be joking."
"Why can you never be on my side?!"
"Oh I'm on my own side. The one where I get you to blush an insane amount. And don't think that Xavier will help you. We both know he likes seeing you blush just as much as I do. Although for me it's just for my own amusement and because you look so adorable when you blush. For him I think it is because you are his mate, you are adorable and everything else."
"Remind me to never allow myself to get locked in a room with the two of you. All you two are going to do is tease and torment me," Maddy whined.
"Because it is fun and he has been doing it to me for years. I mean many many years. It's fun to finally see that he has a new victim and it seems that he was practicing teasing me to use on you. And if so it was totally worth it," Lily laughed.
"You could be empathetic you know."
"You are right... I could be.... but it is far more fun teasing you myself as well. But now I really want to see him teasing you. If this is your reaction to me teasing you, I want to see your reaction to your hot mate teasing you," Lily smirked.
"He's your cousin, why would you call him.. hot."
"Oh come on I was just kidding. I would never be attracted to him, he is my own cousin, however I can still tell whether or not a guy is attractive and even if I couldn't, the way most girls look at him is a good enough indication of that."
Lily laughed as she saw the annoyed look on Maddy's face and her clenched hands.
"Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that. Well he has never had a romantic relationship before you. Before you arrived I doubt he even noticed that there were women here. He never gave them even a glance. Work was more important."
"That's a relief," Maddy sighed.
"Wait you actually were jealous. I have so many things to tell him after today," Lily said.
"No!! You can't. Please don't speak to him at all today (or until you forget everything I have said today)," Maddy said.
"Don't think muttering that can save you. I have great hearing and thanks to that I will not forget it at all, not one bit."
"That's so mean. Do you know how much he is going to tease me tonight if you tell him!"
"Oh I'm counting on it," Lily grinned, "Now the real question is do I return you to him now or do I continue to get valuable information from you?"
"You make it sound as if you are interrogating me."
"Maybe I am but you just give information so easily. Now tell me how does he kiss you?"
"Do you mean on the nose or on the lips?"
"He kisses you on the nose! That is so adorable, and unexpected. I understand how he carries you and gives you things but I never expected him to do that."
"I'm keeping quiet from now on," Maddy squeaked.
"I could always return you now then but I doubt you would be able to look at him without erupting into blushing after our little talk. Now let us continue—"
"I think I am going to go to him," Maddy said running towards the door.
"Fine, and I was just getting to the good part. I never get to do girl talk," Lily sighed.
"Well this feels awkward. I hate needing to be followed everywhere," Maddy sighed glancing around her at the square of armed guards around her that had been waiting right outside Lily's door.
"Well I don't get spared either anymore. Since you come to my room, guards are posted there to ensure no assassin tries to hide there waiting for you. It is absolutely insane and cute."
"You call everything between us 'cute'," the human pointed out.
"I can't help it— look we are here!" Lily exclaimed as they reached the door.
"Wait are you planning on coming in?!" Maddy asked.
"Well then maybe we should go back."
"Its too late for that."
"No it isn't too late for me to protect whatever dignity I have left."
"Oh, no I mean because he had likely already picked up your voice and scent and is waiting inside for you like a lovesick puppy."
"Fine, but you be quiet, understand," Maddy hissed.
"Or else? I'm not hearing any valid threats."
Lily interrupted Maddy by opening the door and pushing her forward.
"Really? Everytime?" Maddy asked her.
"Mads!" Xavier exclaimed seeing his mate.
"Awe he even calls you 'Mads'," Lily cooed.
"Be quiet," Maddy pouted, attempting to shove Lily.
She however failed and went to her mate, deciding to try and make Lily leave by making her feel like an awkward third wheel.
Xavier smiled widely as his mate koala-ed him and began clinging to him like soaked clothes.
"Warm," the girl muttered under her breath, absolutely forgetting about the third wheel the moment she touched her mate.
"She is clinging to you?" Lily said voicing her confusion and hoping for answers but she got absolutely none.
She sighed realizing they were probably stuck in some odd honeymoon phase even though they would never have an actual honeymoon. Within seconds she had given up and left the office, making sure to close the door behind her.
"So is your dress ready?" Xavier asked his mate.
"Nearly. There are still a few small adjustments left. The train is so long though. I keep tripping over it. I am totally going to embarrass myself. By the way if I do trip over it and embarrass myself, you are absolutely not allowed to laugh or say anything," Maddy declared.
"Are you ordering your King around?"
"Maybe I am and if you want any kisses or cuddles at all you will listen," she said smirking.
"We both know that that won't work. Not when you're the one who can't resist snuggling up to me the moment you get near me. I dont know how you are going to handle not latching yourself to me during the ceremony," Xavier laughed.
"That's not true... I don't do that all the time."
"Well then why did you do exactly that the moment you walked into office," he teased, tapping her nose.
"Stop teasing me, Lily already teased me enough today," Maddy sighed.
"Yes," Maddy whined.
"I don't think so, cause your cheeks aren't red enough," he said.
"You're so mean."
"But you love me, I can tell. If you didn't, you wouldn't be attached to me like this."
"Its not my fault you are a giant walking cushion."
"Cushion? How am I a cushion?"
"Well you're better than all of my previous substitutes for cushions. You're not dirt, you're not a brick, you're not snow. Oh and you are so warm and my head is very comfortable against you. Therefore you are my cushion," she laughed.
"You're an idiot."
"But I'm your idiot, aren't I? Meaning you have to put up with me for the rest of your life," she laughed.
"You mean I have to make sure you don't get killed due to your recklessness for the rest of my life," he said.
"We not all of it. Not the times when I am asleep and when I end up in the hospital."
"A place you should be keeping well away from."
"Being a queen is a very hazardous occupation."
"I see that," he replied.
"So Lily told me today about snowman."
"Mhhmm, she said that we should do it together. That couples sometimes do it. I kinda said no since she has been teasing me so much but can we do it together... please? I'll be safe with you. You're practically indestructible aren't you," she said.
"Maddy I just don't want you having any accidents or getting taken. The cold could even make you sick," he said.
"Before I met you I had barely ever not been outside unless you count the one or two times I slept in an abandoned warehouse. That was not often though, because you never know whether or not it is truly abandoned. Point is I will be absolutely fine."
"You are no longer an outside human, Maddy. You are now a pampered little inside human. That means you might not be as strong against the cold as you were," he said.
"Not even for ten minutes? You can dress me as warmly as you want. I'll wear those weird hand socks and scarves and boots. Please? When I came here you let me run through the forest in the snow at night," she said.
"You were going to try climb down and likely fall down the bricks, and I needed a way to help you burn all that energy of yours," he said.
"Well I have energy now that I need to burn," she said crossing her arms.
"I'm sure you do—"
"Please! I've never built a snowman before. The way Lily said it, it sounded very important and fun."
"Fine then, before it gets dark and we will have guards nearby incase anything does happen. If anything does happen, you will run."
"But what if that's what they want— nevermind. Thanks so much!" She said realizing if she continued he would use that as a reason for her not to go out and she needed to go outside.
"You're like a little pet I need to maintain. I need to feed you, take you out to play and then I still need to give you all the attention in the world," he said.
"Don't call me a pet. For me it's as if you are calling me a slave," she said.
"You know I don't mean it like that."
"Of course. I just don't like the word 'pet'."
"I won't use it then," he promised.
"Thanks. Now come, I want to see how a snowman looks," she said jumping off him and tugging his arm.
