Prologue:

I squirmed into a gap under a set of stairs near the shops. All of which were closed because the queen put them out of business.

Of course, my mother had the best reasons to do it. After all, it is very kind of her to do so. I mean, it’s not like they spent their entire lives working for it.

My mother’s the worst.

I held my breath as my mother’s guards stormed past.

Before the last of them was around the corner, my wing brushed a massive pot. Apparently it was off balance, and within seconds it shattered on the hard ground. My heart stopped as the guard whipped around and stared into my eyes with his. A huge grin spread across his face as he charged towards me.

I guess you’re very confused. Don’t worry. I would be too.

So let me explain.

I’m the prince, my mother is the queen. I’m supposed to inherit the throne because I’m the only egg that survived, but I really don’t want to. I maybe might have spoken up about it even though it was the worst idea I’d ever had. And I sort of possibly could have sent my mother on an angry rampage after I told her I was going to run away?

Now she is either trying to kill me, capture me and lock me up, or both.

Good, now that you know what’s going on, I’ll resume.

I watched as the guard stormed towards me at full speed. I jumped out of the way and he scrambled past me, his massive talons digging into the earth as he skittered to a stop. His body twirled around again, and just as he was about to pounce, I sunk my stinger into his scales. He wobbled, then fell to the ground, his entire body going limp. I felt his eyes on me as I bolted down the road towards the main shops. I hear my mother’s voice behind his white eyes hissing at me as I left him on the road. All of which got closed down because the queen put them out of business.
