A Journey of Fajro

Silence fell on the room like a thick blanket that you only use in winter because if you used it any other time of the seasons you would die of suffocation. I just stood there in the middle of my room trying to fight off the crushing guilt and the sense that I might of been in the wrong.

“He was just scared, you know.” I almost forgot that Faldon was still in my room.

“I know and when I get scared my mouth runs away from me. It is a really crappy survival skill if you ask me.” I sighed and began to truly get ready for bed. I didn’t bother asking for Faldon to leave. He was still facing the door and I had a blanket on. I was just about done pulling up my pants when I noticed something weird.

“Faldon your back to normal size!” I looked at him carefully trying not to offend him. I think I have done enough of that tonight, but there is always tomorrow.

“Actually my original size would be able to fit around your ear. I like to be this size almost as much as I like being small enough to ride on your ear.” He said thoughtfully. I was pretty sure he was still thinking about what just happened.

“Faldon if you’re worried about him you can go to him.” I really didn’t want him to go because I liked having him around even if he did come with a caveman attached to his tale.

“It’s not that I was just thinking on how to explain his behavior just now without it sounding barbaric. I am having difficulty with telling you because of the last comment you made before he left.” Faldon explained to me as he crawled up the foot of my bed to lay down again. Once again I was hit with him looking like a cat. Thankfully I was in complete control of my mouth at the moment.

“Well why don’t you begin and if I have any questions I will ask them promptly.” I decided to wrap myself with the blanket because I was suddenly and violently cold.

“I guess I can do that as long as you promise to have an open mind and to remember we come from a different culture.” He looked at me sternly.

“Of course I will! Contrary to the evidence you have seen I am a very open minded person.” I wrapped myself tighter in the blanket trying to bury myself in it. “At least when given time to think about it afterwards.”

“How about this I will tell you about why he acted that way and how our culture is. Only if you will ask me any questions you might have and not assume anything.” Faldon looked very pleased with his compromise.

“Well first he acted like that because you ARE his.” Faldon seemed to have difficulty continuing so I made an encouraging noise. “I don’t have any better way of saying that to be honest it is kind of chauvinistic, but it really is the only way to explain his behavior. You are his to protect, care for, punish, and to love. It is like… Well hell I don’t even know what it’s like honestly. The closest thing I can come up with is a dragon, it is like a dragon.”

“I don’t know much about dragon culture or how they treat their mates but what I saw just now was a controlling ass-hat.” I said trying to get my point across.

“I know to you what you saw was a jerk but do you know what I got from it?” Faldon cocked his head to the side in question.

“Faldon I honestly don’t know how you could have seen it any differently than I had.” I sighed trying to let go of some frustration somehow, without moving around.

“You listened to his words didn’t you? Well I watched his body language and it said ‘I care for you’ and ‘I want to hold you’.” He seemed to be serious.

“Where the hell did you get that from because we must have seen two different scenes all I saw was aggression.” Screw it I got up and started pacing.

“Ajiana you need to see it from a dragon’s point of view and you have to understand that is all HE has seen too. He grew up watching dragon’s convey conversations through body language because only our royalty have the ability to shape change and talk. I am not saying that what he did was right, but I am not saying it was all together wrong. If you had been a dragon you would have seen his questions as what they were, seeking information not as a command. Also you would have seen his advance as him coming to comfort you because he smelled that the entire thing, including him busting into your room, had scared you.” Faldon took a deep breath and let it out slowly as he shifted his weight. “Like I said you are going to have to be open minded. He was raised by dragons whose main form of language is non verbal cues. The only people he was able to speak verbal language with was me and his mother. Do you see at all where this gets in the way of communication between you two?”

“I do and I think I understand what you are saying. I am used to mainly using verbal communication and Illian is mainly used to non verbal communication. Am I correct?”

“Yes!” He let out an explosive sigh that made me giggle a little.

“OK, I will believe what you said you saw but only because I was able to see the hurt my words caused him.” I turned away for a moment not wanting him to see my tears forming. “I didn’t mean to hurt him.”

“I know you didn’t. You were terrified especially after the conversation we had and then lighting yourself on fire.” He shook his head in amazement, “Do me a favor never get mad at me for anything please. I could barely stand the flames when they were still under your skin.”

“What do you mean under my skin?” I covered my mouth with my hand trying to stifle my yawn.

“You know what we will talk about that tomorrow with Illian. Why don’t you try to get some sleep.” He jumped off the bed and started for the door.

“Faldon… I-I-I was wondering i-i-if… Never-mind!” I walked over to the bed and pulled the covers back trying to pretend he was not looking at me with interest.

“Yes.” was all he said.

“Yes what?” I crawled into bed as casually as I could.

“You want me to stay in here until you fall asleep. My answer is yes.” He began crawling onto the foot of the bed.

“I can open the door so you can leave during the night and go to Illian.”

“Nope don’t worry about it just go to sleep now.” He curled up at the foot of my bed laying his head on my ankles.

I lay there for a few minutes just thinking how peaceful it was to have him there. I closed my eyes to sleep and fall right onto a dream about Illian.
