Oh the Joy it's My First Day of Training
Chapter 11: Oh the Joy It’s my First day of Training
I lay in bed staring up at the ceiling. It was around two in the morning. Toshiro was sleeping soundly in his bed across the room from me and I just can’t get to sleep. I’ve been here for a week now. I’m starting to realize that I really miss mom and dad’s cooking. The school food wasn’t too bad, but I was getting tired of it. Maybe I’ll go home for the rest of the weekend so I can visit mom and dad. It was strange not having them to talk to about my day.
I sighed quietly and sat up in bed. “Maybe going for a walk will clear my head.” I whispered to myself. And got out of bed. I slipped on my sandals and grabbed my key and slipped out of the room. I quickly closed my eyes because of the lights in the hall before bringing my arm up and cracked my eyes open and walked down the hall.
Once I got outside it wasn’t so bad. The dim light of the lamps that were around campus allowed me to drop my arm back down to my side and walk normally. There was a cool breeze tonight, but it wasn’t strong. I walked towards the school to walk a few laps around the school. “Maybe after a few laps will help tire me out.”
Crickets were chirping in the woods that were close by. It was peaceful and the air was crisp. I rounded the school and I noticed that all the lights for the school pool were on. “Is someone swimming at this hour?” I muttered to myself and walked over to a window so I could peer in and see who was in there.
“Sean…” I said as I saw him pacing back and forth gripping onto his swimming cap.
He looked frustrated and annoyed with something. I stood there for a few moments and then my body decided for me that I was going to go in. I came in the side door and it squeaked a little as I came in. “Hey.” I greeted as I saw him looking at me.
“What are you doing up?” Sean asked me.
“I could ask you the same question. But I couldn’t sleep.” I answered.
“No outside shoes on the pool floor.” He commented before I could finish my step onto the tiles.
“Sorry.” I said and slipped out of my sandals and left them on the matt before stepping onto the cool tiles. “What are you doing?”
“Swimming. What does it look like?” He questioned with a, are-you-that-stupid tone.
“Well you seem frustrated with yourself. Is there anything I can do to help?” I asked.
He sighed a bit and looked over at the water. “I’m trying to get under a certain time.” He was wearing legging type swimming gear. I think that’s what they’re called anyways.
“What’s the time you have to beat for the try outs?” I asked getting right to the point.
He shook his head, “I’ve beaten the time that I need to in order to qualify for the team. I’m trying to beat that time.” I looked to where he was pointing. The time that he was pointing at was last year’s captain of the swim teams record.
“Your nuts you know that right? He went to states last year for freestyle.” I mentioned.
“I’m aware, I watched them while they were on TV. That’s why I’m determined to beat that record of his during the try outs.” Sean was dead serious about it. You honestly would be able to tell that he had gotten a concussion almost two weeks ago. He was recovering quickly thankfully. I remember him being upset and venting that he didn’t remember a thing about the book he had to read in his AP English class so he had to start from the beginning, but thankfully Mrs. Aras gave him an extension because she was told what happened.
“Do you have a timer? I could time you if you want me to.” I offered. I just wanted to help an old friend. Slowly…very slowly we were starting to actually become friends again.
“Well…I mean…it’s late…” He looked away from me and started rubbing the back of his neck.
“I’m not tired and there’s no one around.” I told him. “Now where’s the timer?”
He clicked his tongue and walked over to the edge of the pool and grabbed his timer and walked back over. “I’m only going to do a few rounds.”
I took the timer from him and smiled. “That’s fine.” I followed him back over to the pool as he put on his cap and brought his goggles back up. He got on the block and got into a crouched position and focused on the water. “On your mark…” He rose into a ready position “Go.” He launched off the block as I hit the start button. His take off was a perfect arc and very smooth.
He glided through the water quickly like a fish. If he was out of shape for swimming wise he made it a long way really fast depending on how long he’s been doing this. It was as if I blinked and he was already rounding back to the block. I focused on the wall and my thumb hovered over the stop button. His hands hit the wall and My thumb hit stop.
Sean stood up in the pool and pulled his goggles down. “How did I do?” He asked a little out of breath.
“Your ten seconds under the time. You we’re flying though. That was amazing.” I exclaimed.
He sighed and slapped the surface of the water. “Again…I’m going again.” He lifted himself out of the pool and fixed his goggles once again.
“You got this.” I encouraged him and he gave me a quick smirk before getting back on the block.
I saved his first time and then cleared the clock ready to go for the next round. “On your mark…go.” I said and again he was off.
Again, so fast it was almost difficult to look down at the timer and back up to see where he was. I just got to the point where I just focused on him and waited to see him hit the wall. He came up and stared at me intently waiting for his time.
I looked up at the banner with the time and back at the stopwatch as I heard him get out of the pool. “You beat it! By a second but you beat the time!” I exclaimed.
“YES! A FUCK YES!!” He pumped his fists in the air and we high fived and then he hugged me and lifted me up off the floor.
I didn’t know what to do I was shocked that he did that. He quickly put me down and took a step away. He coughed into a closed fist and looked away. “Sorry about that.”
“It’s fine. I think I’m going to wait and let me clothes dry a little bit before I go outside and back to the dorms though.” I commented chuckling a little.
“But seriously, thank you I was getting frustrated because I couldn’t get a proper time reading with having to do it myself.” He said.
“Your welcome.” I smiled. “I’m glad I could help.”
Sean walked back over to the pools edge and sat down putting his feet in the water. “I’m sorry about getting into a fight with you. I didn’t realize it was you. You really chopped your hair since middle school.” My hair was shoulder length in middle school. I figured when I was going into high school that I needed a change and I so I chopped it off and now it’s just a short/medium length mess that I never want to brush.
“It’s okay. It took me a few minuets to realize it was you when I was standing in the crowd.” I replied honestly as I sat down on a dry block. “You’ve hit a pretty big growth spurt since middle school.”
“You’ve hit a few growth spurts yourself.” Sean mentioned.
“Why can’t we do this more often?” I asked him seriously.
He looked away from me and at the water. “We can just…just not in public…I’m sorry Sasuke.”
“Oh…well…okay…” I pulled my legs up to my chest and hugged my legs.
It fell silent between us for a little bit. “Hey Sean…do you remember when we were kids?” I looked down at him.
He nodded, “I do. We pretty much did whatever we could together. We protected each other like we were brothers. Well, you more so protected me…”
“Do you remember when I said I had a secret to tell you?” I stared at him focused.
“I do, but I had to go home before you could tell me and then the next day you got in that accident because of me.” Sean wouldn’t look at me.
“I’m willing to tell you the secret. If you promise that you won’t tell a soul that I told you. Not a word about it is allowed to come out of your mouth.” I warned. “If you say anything I’ll kick your ass.”
Sean laughed, “You kick my ass. That’s a good one Sasuke. But I promise I won’t tell anyone.” He agreed.
I let got of my legs and put them under me and reached out to Sean with my left hand. “Shake on it. And you know what shake I’m talking about.”
He sighed and brought his right hand over. He took my hand in a firm grip and then are hands to our fingertips and our fingers slipped off and we closed our hands into fists and fist bump. “Okay, now what’s the big secret?” He questioned.
“Look what I can do.” I opened my hand and made a flame appear. It was a small yellow-orange flame that floated about half an inch above my palm.
“Holy shit.” Sean said completely thrown off guard. “How the hell are ya doing that?”
I closed my hand and extinguished the flame. “I don’t really know how to explain how I can do it to be honest. But remember you promised not to tell anyone. I’m trusting you with this.”
“I won’t, I won’t.” He waved at me, “Damn, that’s epic. Is that how when you kicked me there was a small fire on my shirt?”
I nodded, “Sorry about that. It’s a bit of a long story.” I rubbed the back of my neck.
“I believe you.” He said standing up and stretching his arms.
“Thanks.” I smiled a little. It made me happy that he actually believed me. And on top of it he didn’t flip shit and run away from me.
“Still can’t swim?” He asked. It seemed that he didn’t want the conversation to end.
I chuckled and looked at the pool, “Nope. I still sink like a champ. Last time I checked, like two years ago anyways.”
“Then let me teach you how to swim at some point.” Sean offered and I was taken aback by it.
“S-seriously?” I stuttered and he nodded as he switched to his other arm.
“Yeah I’m serious. I wouldn’t have offered if I wasn’t serious. Isn’t a part of gym swimming anyways?” He rose an eyebrow at me.
I laughed sheepishly and looked away from him. “I usually find someway to get out of it. I always have. I just don’t feel comfortable in the water.” I confessed to him.
“Just let me know when you want me to start helping you.” He smiled a bit.
“But I thought you said we can’t hang out in public.” I stuck my tongue out at him.
“Hey now swimming is different. It’s the school pool.” He chuckled putting up his hands in defense. “What about later today, considering that it’s the morning and all.”
My smile fell and I looked away. “I can’t…I’m starting my training today.”
“Your training? Do you mean with your fire?”
I nodded, “Yeah dad wants me to start, and Shiro’s going to be the one helping.” I instantly put my hand over my mouth because that just slipped out.
“What? Snowflake is like you?!” He exclaimed completely shocked. “And your parents too?”
Well cat’s out of the bag now… “Yeah…mom, dad, and Toshiro.” I started to try to explain things as best as I can with what I’ve been told at least. And every time over and over I begged Sean to keep it a secret. I left out the part that at some point we were going to be going to Amoura. I didn’t want to know how he would react to it.
“It’s four in the morning. As much as I would like to keep talking like old times. We should both get back to our dorms and hit the sack.” Sean yawned and I looked up at the clock. I couldn’t believe that we just sat here for two hours pretty much all we were doing was talking.
“Yeah.” I nodded in agreement and got off the block. “Hey don’t be a stranger. You know your welcome over any time. I’m sure my mom would love to see you again.” I mentioned as I walked over to the side door to slip on my sandals again.
“We’ll see.” He answered grabbing his towel and heading into the locker room. “See ya.”
“Later.” I said and left. After the cool air hit me it just felt like I hit a brick wall. I was exhausted and now I had to drag my butt back to my dorm. “I’m not even going to change I’m just going to pass out.” I said to myself and that’s just what I did. Once I got back into the room I lay down and just passed right out.
“Hey…wake up.” I heard Toshiro’s voice echo around me. My body was lightly shaking.
I just rolled over and had my back to him and started drifting back off to sleep.
“No going back to sleep Sasuke. Get up.” Toshiro said and started shaking me harder.
I cracked my eyes opened and pulled my cell phone that was under my pillow out to see what time it is. “It’s 6 in the morning on a Saturday, let me sleep in a little.” I groaned shoving my phone back under my pillow.
"No you have to get up because I have something for us to do today, now get up." He said and I felt his pillow hit my back.
“Nooooooooo.” I protested and didn’t move from my spot.
“Sasuke. Come on it’s not that bad. It’s going to be fun.” Toshiro tempted.
“What kind of fun?” I asked peaking over my shoulder at him.
“It’s surprise.” He smiled sweetly at me.
“Not interested.” I laid my head back down and closed my eyes as I pulled my covers over my head.
I heard him sigh and it sounded like ice was crackling. I peaked over my blanket and saw hi standing there and in his free hand lightly tossing a snowball in the air. “Get up or this is going down your pants.” He warned with a dead serious expression.
I glared at him for a moment and then sighed and threw my blanket off. “I don’t need my bed wet.”
“Good now get dressed. We’re going to go for a walk.” Toshiro said and tossed me the snowball. With out thinking I caught the snowball and it instantly started melting. It turned into slush in my hands and the water that spilled over that didn’t evaporate dribbled on my shorts soaking them.
“Jerk.” I muttered standing up and focusing on trying to get the rest of the water to evaporate before it all just poured out of my hands onto the floor.
“You’ll get better.” He smiled. “I’m going to go brush my teeth so get changed into something your willing to get dirty.”
“You know any normal person is sleeping at this point in time.” I rose my voice a bit at him.
“Ah that is true, but we’re not normal now are we.” He smirked and opened the door with his free hand and his toothpaste and toothbrush in the other. “Now get changed.”
I sighed once again. “Yes sir.” He closed the door. “Why am I doing this? I should just go back to bed. Only two hours of sleep…I’m in no mood to want to even be up right now.” I continued to mutter to myself as I threw on a pair of cargo shorts and a black tank top.
I grabbed my toothbrush and toothpaste and went t the bathroom myself and brushed my teeth. When I got back to the room Toshiro was already waiting with his shoes on ready to go. I set my stuff on my desk and slipped on my shoes. “Alright.” I sighed, “Lead the way.”
I followed him out of the dorms and off we went on a walk. “Shiro where are we going?” I asked still feeling half asleep and wanting to go back to bed.
“Headmaster told me that he wanted you to start working your training. You should get control of your first element before moving into your second.” He explained.
“And when exactly did you have this conversation with my father?” I questioned right back not amused as I put two and two together. We weren’t going on a walk we were going to spar using out elements. On two hours of sleep I am going to have my first elemental sparing match.
“A few days ago during lunch period.” He replied like it was the simplest answer in the world.
“I don’t think today is the best day to do this. I mean doesn’t a first day of training seem like more of a Sunday thing?” I really just want to go back to bed.
Toshiro chuckled, “I think today is a good day to start. Besides we’re almost to the spot I found for us to train.”
I guess I can’t turn back now. “Fine.” I sighed as we came out of the woods and into an open meadow. It was a nice looking meadow. The weeds were more so just like grass with some small flowers around. It was peaceful. I’m sure at night this spot would be amazing to look at the stars. “Oh wow…” Escaped my lips as I looked around.
“I thought it was stunning too when I found this place. I’m sure other people know about it so that’s why I figured that coming here early in the morning would be the best time to train. And since it’s Saturday everyone will want to sleep in so we at least have till ten if we want to go that long.” Shiro explained placing his hands on his hips.
“I guess that makes since.” I started stretching my arms and loosening my body up for whatever was coming my way.
“So today just focus with your base element. Stick with fire and don’t worry about trying to work with ice. No matter what fire should be your go to element. That’s what your dad told me.” He said.
“But how exactly do we spar with our element? I just don’t really get it. Do we do it like that cartoon?” I wondered.
“Well we could, but everyone has their own style of fighting. The main point of this first training is to just get you to realize that you have a tool that will help you greatly. Think of your element as an extension of your limbs.” Shiro walked about five yards away from me before turning around. “It’ll take some concentration but you’ll get use to it after a while and sooner or later it’ll just be second nature to you.”
I nodded and jumped up and down a little. “Alright, I think I can handle that.” I agreed.
“So whenever your ready just come at me and we’ll start.” Shiro said and shifted his right leg back and shifted so his left was facing towards me and his body was more so at an angle.
I took a few quick breaths and then sprinted forward towards my first elemental opponent. I quickly got over to Toshiro and pulled my right fist back and thrust it forward. He quickly dodged but it felt like it was in slow motion. He jumped back a few hops to get away from my and placed both hands behind his back. I skid to a stop and turned on my toes and pushed off towards him once again. Punch after punch he dodged not throwing a punch himself just simply moving out of the way and then a quick swift kick to my side to send me flying off to the side.
“Sasuke I won’t start to fight you till you start using your element.” Toshiro told me as I stood back up.
“I don’t understand how I’m supposed to use it in the first place. We’re not going to get anywhere because I can’t use it. I don’t know how I got it to work before. I want it to work I really do, but I can’t get it to come out.” I explained pulling at my hair.
“What did you feel before when you first used it?” He asked me.
“I don’t know. When I was little I was scared. When it was with Sean it was protecting you and self defense…” I answered ‘And when I showed Sean it was excitement and joy.’ Sighing I stood there and crossed my arms over my chest. “I almost feel as if I’m afraid of it in a way. I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
“Hum…” Toshiro walked over to me letting his hands drop to his sides. “Can you do it if we’re not fighting?”
I took a breath and thrust my fist forward but nothing came out. I tried again with my other fist again nothing. “Why can’t I do it?” I yelled frustrated pulling at my hair. “There’s no one in front of me, I’m not going to hurt anything why is this happening? UGH!!!” I kicked the grass.
“Relax Sasuke.” I looked around when I heard mom’s voice. Her and dad came out of the woods. Mom had her usual bright smile on her face and dad looked relaxed.
“Mom, dad, why are you here?” I was a bit shocked to see them.
“Well Toshiro told me that you two were going to start training here this morning and your mom wanted to come and watch so I figured that I would tag along as well.” Dad explained.
“Toshiro dear let me work with Sasuke first.” Mom smiled and Toshiro nodded and wandered over to where dad was standing that was about fifteen yards away form mom and me.
“I can’t do it mom. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” I said. “I feel like I’m failing you and dad.”
Mom put her hands on my shoulders and smiled brightly. “Sweetie you said it yourself your scared. You were worried that you were going to hurt Toshiro with your fire. You need to embrace your fire not push it away. Now I want you to close your eyes.” I rose an eyebrow at her. “Just do it.”
“Okay, okay.” I sighed and closed my eyes.
“Now I want you to take a deep breath.” I did as I was told and took a deep breath. “In your mind do you see your flame?” I nodded slowly as I exhaled slowly. A small bright blue flame danced in front of me lighting up the darkness. “I want you to reach out to it. Don’t back away from it. Let it rest in your hand.” As mom said those words the flame floated over to me and rested there.
“Do you feel its warmth? Your flame is bright and beautiful. Let your flame into your heart. Let it be one with you. Let the bond be stronger then words between you and your fire. You do not control it and it does not control you. You work together side by side and you’ll together till the end.” I brought the blue flame close to my chest and it floated into my chest filling my body with a surge of heat. My mother’s words echoed around me and I clutched my chest from the heat. I took some deep breaths and the heat faded and a soft blue flame enveloped my body. It didn’t burn me it was almost like a protective barrier.
I opened my eyes and mom was still standing in front of me with a smile on her face. “Now let’s try side by side.” She moved over to my right. My heart was pounding as I took one last slow breath. “Ready?” I nodded.
I thrust my right fist out while my mom did the same with her left. He right red flame shot out of her fist as a bright blue flame came from mine. I wanted to jump for joy, but I continued following through with my left and taking a step and once more with my right then stepping with left I twisted and swung my right leg up a streak of blue flame followed my foot with exact timing. Once my toes of my right foot touched the ground I followed up with my left with the same thing. I was panting from the quick successions that I had just done and I realized that mom was jumping up and down clapping.
“You did it!” Mom exclaimed and ran over to me and hugged me tight. “Your flame is blue that’s amazing!! I knew you had a hot flame.”
I couldn’t help but smile and laugh as I hugged her back. “Thank you. Thank you so much.”
“Are you willing to try again with the spar?” Toshiro asked walking up to mom and I along with dad.
I nodded with a smile, “I can give it a shot.”
“I’ll start you off then and we’ll treat this spar like one at the academy in the arena.” Dad smiled. I could tell he was proud of me. I was so happy, I felt like I actually belonged and was apart of my family. Things seemed to be looking up and the day was a bit brighter.
