Well Aren't You Shocking
Chapter 23: Well Aren’t You Shocking
It’s been a month since we arrived here in Amoura. The Academy itself is absolutely beautiful and huge. I’m still having a bit of a hard time remembering my way around. Classes have actually been pretty enjoyable. Dad signed me up for a martial arts class. I don’t mind it, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so out of shape in my life, but it’s getting a lot better now. I’m not sore any more when I get up in the mornings. Though, I am having a hell of a lot of fun learning self-defense, and I know that it’ll come in handy and I can learn stuff properly over just remembering what I saw from the Karate Kid movies.
The house that mom and dad have here is a bit bigger than the one that we had back on earth. For the past few weekends I’ve been going home and helping unpack. Shiro, Kyo, and the twins have been coming with me to help. But I think it’s more so because they like my mothers’ cooking and it also means that whoever has to cook that night doesn’t have to do it. Oh yeah, we have a rotation schedule on who’s cooking or we’ll just go to the cafeteria, which is like a very large café if we don’t have anything in the dorm. Each dorm is given a certain amount of money a month to be able to get food, and other things. But students are allowed to get part time jobs in town. What we normally do is every other week, normally on Friday the five of us will sit down and figure out what we need for groceries. I think it works out pretty well.
Even with having my friends and family around me I do wonder every now and again if Sean is doing okay, but whenever I linger on the thought for too long I start to get a headache. I’m almost positive dad has something to do with it, but I don’t want to ask him about it. It’s probably for the best anyways. I’m sure he doesn’t remember me.
“Yo, Sasuke are you listening to me?” I jumped slightly when Kyo snapped his fingers in front of my face bringing me back to the present.
“Um…no, sorry I was thinking. What was your question again?” I looked over at him as he flopped back down in his chair across from me with a frustrating sigh.
“I asked if you would be willing to switch with me and make dinner tonight and I’ll make dinner on Friday. Mine and Shiro’s weapon class for today was rescheduled from this morning to tonight so I would be in the dorm to be able to make dinner.” He said crossing his arms over his chest. “I’m sure that everyone doesn’t want to wait for us to get back around eight tonight for me to start dinner.”
“That would explain why you and Shiro were still in the dorm this morning when I had to go to class.” I stated, it was more so for myself making the realization then saying it to Kyo. Neither of them will tell me any more than it’s a weapons class. I guess it’s going to be something I’m going to have to take at some point. “But yeah, we can switch.”
“Sweet thanks, I owe ya one.” He said leaning back in his chair.
“Not a problem,” I stood up and grabbed my bag, “I have to get going though…”
“Gotta talk with the headmaster?” Kyo guessed hitting the nail right on the head.
I nodded, “Yeah, dad wants to talk to me and give me something.” I pushed in my chair. “So I’ll see you tonight then.”
“Alright, sounds good, I’ll catch ya later.” Kyo stood up as well, “I should probably get going myself, should try to get some homework done.”
I chuckled, “Good luck with that.” I waved, “See ya,” And with that I headed out of the cafeteria.
Dad’s office is on the other side of campus from the cafeteria and where my dorm is located. The dorms on campus make a crescent moon shape on the left side of campus. Dad showed me a sky view picture of the campus before. He said one of his friends who’s a wind elemental took the picture. By no means is this campus flat. There are so many hills and stairs if you’re not in shape when you come here to Amoura, you are very much so going to be in shape after going here. But yeah, dad office is in the same building as the people who assign dorms. It’s not too big of a building, but it is a good size. The building is two stories and is made of terra cotta colored bricks. The people who handle the dorms have the entire first floor of the building and Dad has the second floor. Usually every day I walk into the building there are other students in here. Wither it be they lost their key or they would like to do a dorm swap.
I waved to Mr. Acker as I walked into the building. “Your father’s in his office.” He answered my unspoken question.
“Thanks.” I nodded and headed right up the wooden stairs. The door to Dad’s office was at the end of a short hall. It was an oak door that looks to be very well kept. It was cracked open but I knocked anyways.
“It’s open.” Dad’s voice came from inside. I pushed the heavy door open and walked into his office. Dad’s office has a light tan paint on the walls, cedar panel ceiling, and light oak wood floors. The office was pretty big; his deep mahogany wooden desk was at the opposite end of the room with a matching chair that has deep velvet cushions on it. There are also two chairs that are the same deep mahogany color that are in front of the desk for people who need to talk with him or are in trouble sit. Dad isn’t really the best at keeping things organized. Well, it doesn’t look organized with the stacks of books and papers on the sides of the desk. Even though I’ve tried countless times to clean and organize it dad tells me he knows where everything is and that he’ll clean it up later, but everything is still there and I think it’s a bit taller than when I was in here about a week ago.
“Where are you?” I asked looking behind the desk to see if he was on the floor because he dropped something.
“I’m in the library.” He answered and I walked into the open door that matched the one that I came through to come into his office.
The library that was connected to dad’s office was about the same size as his office, but it didn’t seem like it. It has matching walls, floor. And ceiling, but the left and right walls, from the floor to the ceiling are just bookshelves. The wall opposite of the door has a beautiful arch window that dad normally has cracked open. You can always hear the birds chirping because the window faces the woods. In the center of the room was a large circular carpet with a leather couch and love seat that were on opposite sides of a mahogany coffee table. It wasn’t as messy in here as around dad’s office, but there were still some stacks of books here and there waiting to be put away more than likely.
“Please don’t fall.” I said to dad as I noticed that he was at the top of the ladder on the left wall, only hanging on with the strength of his legs.
“I won’t, I found what I was looking for.” He said pulling that book out as I walked under him and looked up. He looked down at me, “Besides, I do this all the time, catch.” And dropped the book.
I almost dropped the book when it landed in my hands, I was not expecting it to be as heavy as it was. The cover to the book is a deep, midnight blue hard cover with pale yellow lettering on it that said The Basics of Elements by Lucian Ney, it was also written on the spine.
“Who’s Lucian Ney?” I asked dad as he came down the ladder.
“Lucian Ney, is the earth elemental that helped create Amoura and the dimension that we’re in now. “He was also a scholar and loved to research. He’s written many books that I have here, but this is the one that you need to start with.” He answered now standing in front of me. “This is your first homework assignment from me. You need to memorize Elements Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth, what are the abilities that each element has, what elements branch off them, and the weakness of each element.” My head’s already spinning. “I’ll give you a quiz on it next week Friday, so that gives you over a week to learn those four elements.”
“Can I at least write stuff down first?” I asked with a bit of panic in my voice.
Dad chuckled and patted my shoulder, “Go sit down, I’ll be joining you shortly, I just need to get something from my desk first.”
“So I’ll see you in like five minutes then, got it.” I smirked as dad walked towards the door.
“No, I just got this paper today, so it’s sitting right on top of everything else.” And shot back, but didn’t look back at me as he left the room. I shook my head and went over to the love seat, setting my bag on the floor I sat down, then set the book on the coffee table. I opened up my bag and got out a not book and pen so I could jot down everything that dad told me before I forget. Once I did that I put both the notebook and the book he gave me into my bag as dad came back into the library with a few pieces of paper in his hand. “Now that I think about it, have you by any chance seen one of the books written by him while you were unpacking? I haven’t been able to find it.”
“Dad, you have so many books I don’t know what one you’re talking about.” I answered.
“If you find it the title is Spirit Weapons and the Spirit Realm,” Dad set the papers down on the table in front of himself then spun them and pushed them towards me.
“What are these?” I asked picking them up.
“Frustratingly enough we, as moon elementals, ultimately have a mental switch. If we come under extremely high amounts of stress and strain we can snap, we lose control of our abilities. If that ever happens the elders will put you through a test, what that test is, I don’t know. It’s different for every moon elemental.” Dad explained leaning back on the couch and crossing his arms over his chest.
“So what does that mean then?” I asked a bit confused by the whole thing. Exactly how much stress am I allowed to be under before that mental switch flips? You know what…never mind, I really don’t want to know.
“If you fail the test, you get a seal placed on you. This seal will lock all other elements other than your base element. After six months have passed you will be tested once again. If you pass you will be allowed to access a few more elements and so on till the seal is completely removed.” Dad finished, it kinda sounds like he’s been through it before…
“Has this happened to you before?” I asked, I figured I might as well try.
Sighing heavily dad ran his fingers through his hair, “When I was young, yes. I was younger then you when it happened though.” I opened my mouth to say something but dad put his hand up before I could, “Maybe later I’ll tell you about it. The point of me telling you this is I don’t want it to happen to you.”
It sounds rough…considering that dad’s going back to his maybe later sepal I know that I’m not going to be able to get to know any more about it. “So who are the elder’s?”
“The elders uphold the rules of Amoura. The elders are also the ones that I am still discussing the matter of Mrs. Snyder. At least I have Faron to help back me up with it.” Dad said crossing his legs.
“Are you talking about the no human’s on Amoura thing?” I remember him saying something about it before I’m just not too sure if that’s what he means.
But he did nod, so that means that I was remembering things correctly. That rule was actually also stopping us from being able to bring Sean with us. Which, that still really hurts. And now my head hurts…son of a bitch. “You’re thinking about Sean again aren’t you?” Dad must have seen the pain in my face, or the fact that I leaned back and put a hand on my forehead.
“It wasn’t even that long. Why did you do this anyways? Why am I not allowed to linger on thoughts of my best friend?” I questioned, he didn’t seem surprised at all when I accused him of being the reason I get these headaches.
“I’m just taking precaution that’s all, nothing more nothing less. Once you have a better hold on everything here I’ll get them to stop, but for now you don’t need to be thinking about it.” Dad uncrossed his arms and stood up. “I think I’ve held you up for long enough. You have some homework to do, and your mother will be very upset with me if I pull an all-nighter in the office again.”
I looked over at the clock and I’m honestly a bit shocked, it’s already been an hour and a half. I placed the papers in my open back and then zipped it up. “You coming home this weekend?” Dad questioned as I draped one of my straps over my shoulder.
“I may, there’s not a lot of stuff left to unpack, considering that everyone has been helping out.” I shrugged as I walked around the table and gave dad a hug. Before he let my go he pulled the other strap onto my other shoulder.
“I figured I would ask, your mother and I still need to go shopping is all.” Dad responded and put his hand in his pockets.
“Maybe I should ask the guys if they would be willing to help clean your office.” I chuckled as dad and I walked back into the actual office from his library.
“That’s not necessary. I know where stuff is and I’m sure that your mother will yell at me to pick everything up eventually. So I’ve still got till whenever she decides to come and talk to me about something.” Dad pulled a hand out of his pocket and pulled some of my hair out of my face. “Get a haircut the next time you go into town, your hair’s getting long.”
I rolled my eyes, even though he’s right and I really should, seeing as how I can tuck my bangs behind my ear and put my hair up in a small pony tail it’s about time I cut it. “I’ll think about it.” I waved and headed towards the door. “I’ll see you later dad.” And with that I felt the office and made sure that I left it cracked open like how it was when I arrived earlier. I quickly descended down the stairs and left the building. “What should I make for dinner tonight…” I muttered to myself.
I apparently wasn’t paying attention to where I was going because when I turned the corner I collided with someone. Losing my balance, I stumbled back and landed on my ass with a thud.
“Watch where the fuck you’re going.” The guy I ran into instantly spat at me. I looked at at him, he was also on his butt on the ground. He has short, messy, burnet hair and light green eyes. He was very pissed, but I kinda get the feeling that me running into him only added more fuel to whatever fire was already lit under his ass.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to run into you.” I said standing up and brushing off my backside. “I’m Sasuke by the way, Sasuke Kai...” He cut me off.
“I know who the fuck you are. You’re the headmasters’ son, I don’t give a fuck.” Damn this kids mouth was just as bad as Sean’s.
“All I did was apologize to you. You don’t have to be a dick about it.” I said and he got up himself and got into my face.
“Do you think that everyone should just forgive you because you’re the headmaster’s son? Let me tell ya something buddy, there’s a lot of people that hate ya and I’m starting to be one of them.”
“I didn’t do anything to you. This is the first time we’ve even met. Why do you hate me when you don’t even know me?” I asked him as he grabbed the collar of my shirt.
“How about you just stay the fuck out of my way before I shock you into next week.” Why does it seem that I always end up getting the shitty end of people’s problems?
“Go ahead and try, I dare ya kid, make my day. Let’s see how fast I can put you on your ass.” I retorted I heard air cracking around me, he’s a lightning elemental.
All of a sudden a slab of earth rose up between us and pushed the kids hands off of my shirt. “I think that’s enough of that.” I looked over to see Jason and Gil standing not too far away.
Gil walked over to me, “You alright?” He questioned with a small smile and I nodded,
“Yeah, I’m all good.” I said as the earth slab went back down.
“Nero, if your upset you shouldn’t take out on someone else. It’s not right in the slightest. Sasuke has done anything to you.” Jason defended me as he came over at well.
“Tch..” He hissed a bit shoved his hands in his pockets. “Go fuck yourself.” He turned around so his back was to us, “Whatever, have fun with your friends.” I can’t be sure, but I think I heard him say something along the lines of, “No one’s your friend in the long run…” I don’t think it was me that upset him in the first place. It must have been someone that he thought was his friend. The kid stormed off not even turning back to look at the three of us.
“Who is that kid anyways?” I asked Gil and Jason as I picked up my bag that was still on the ground.
“That’s Nero Ulric. He’s normally just the kind of guy who is fairly cocky, but he’s usually up beat and always talking about what he wants his first tattoo to be.” Jason answered shrugging a bit. “So I don’t really know what’s gotten into him.
“Someone must have really upset him for him to just go off like that.” Gil added.
That would make sense considering that I think I heard, but I can’t be too sure. “But, thank you both for breaking up the fight.”
“Of course.” Gill smiled softly with a light nod.
Jason on the other hand jumped and put his arm across my shoulders, “Your cooking tonight right? How about we come over and you can cook us dinner too?”
“Who told you I was…You ran into your brother didn’t you?” I asked the blonde that has his arm over my shoulders and we started walking.
All Jay did was give me a big grin and started chuckling, “We may have.”
I shook my head and couldn’t help but laugh a little myself, “Fine you guys can come over and I’ll make dinner for everyone. But you have to save enough for Shiro and Kyo, they won’t be back till later tonight because of their class.”
“Done and done!” Jason exclaimed happily.
“So what did you have to go to see the headmaster about, if you don’t mind me asking.” Gil questioned as we made our way back to my dorm.
I told them that dad wanted to pretty much give me my first homework assignment as we walked to my dorm. I left out the whole mental switch thing that I still really don’t understand.
“At least it’s only four of the elements so far.” Jason commented as we walked into my dorm and Jason took off his beanie and let his hair fall. His hair goes down to about the middle of his back when he actually lets it down. I’ve asked him why he wears a beanie and hides his hair. He told me it’s because he gets picked on for how long it is, but he likes it this long and doesn’t want to cut it so he hides it. I wish I could help him not have to hide it.
“True, and one of them is my base element, so I think it would be best if I knew what I could do with that element.” I agreed setting my backpack down against the back of the couch.
“That’s right you’re not in a specific class that focuses on one element are you?” Gil asked me.
I shook my head as I heard the door open and Hale’s voice, “I wasn’t. It’s because I’m going to be working with dad. I’m surprised though that he didn’t stick me in the basics of fire class. I figured that he would want me to take a different one every year. That is if I have that element.”
“What are we talking about?” Hale asked from the living room as I was now in the kitchen and trying to figure out what I was going to make for dinner.
Thankfully Gil explained what I told him and Jason to the twins, then soon after Aaron came over to join his roommates. I decided to make ham and veggie fried brown rice considering we have what I need for that in the house. We really need to go shopping for some different things other than our normal. This is one of our normal things. We looked up a recipe that was fairly similar to Chinese takeout and this was it. But I can make a lot of it, which is a plus.
That Nero kid keeps creeping back up to the forefront of my mind though. The way he’s acting…it’s a lot like how Sean was at the beginning of the school year. Maybe if I can talk to him…No that’s stupid…this school his huge, it’ll be a miracle if I run into him again. Sighing I focused on making food.
We had a fun night and I had to make sure that there was enough food left over for Kyo and Shiro. The two of them did join in on the fun when they came back from their class. They both looked exhausted.
All of us had a good time and talked about a bunch of different things. Our conversations ranged from Disney movies to if anyone could have a different element then the one they were born with. Oh and Gil had a vision while we were having that discussion. It was interesting to witness. Aaron told me that he just trails off in the middle of a sentence and I was kinda skeptical about it at first, but now that I’ve actually seen it happen it’s kinda funny and cool. Minus the blank expression that he gets that made me worry slightly. But when I asked Aaron about it while it was happening he said that always happens as well.
Once he was back with us he finished his sentence like nothing even happened. We all tried to get him to tell us what his vision was, but he wouldn’t budge very far. The most that we got out of him was that it involved the last open room in our dorm and that was it. So we have no idea what that even means.
Aaron, Gil, and Jay went back to their dorm at ten. Kyo wouldn’t let me take care of the left overs or dishes even though I was the one who made dinner tonight. He said it was only fair and Shiro wouldn’t let me argue with him. Oh and with that homework that my dad assigned me…yeah, I have the book out and one my desk with a new notebook. Neither of them are open, I’m way too even think about starting that sucker tonight. I get done around one tomorrow anyways so I can get a good chunk of it done when I get back. I wonder if this is what it’s like to be in college… The whole living away from home and cooking for yourself and making sure that all your homework is done in time for your class that it’s due without a parent asking you if you’ve gotten it done or not…It makes logical sense. “Maybe I should ask one of the older students here if they ever went to college back on earth before they came here.” It’s always worth a shot.
“You’re talking to yourself again.” I feel like I jumped five feet in the air he scared the shit out of me with being so quiet.
I turned to glare at the white and freshly fallen snow haired best friend and he stood in my doorway smiling happily, “Geez Shiro don’t scare me like that,” I sighed and walked over to my dresser and found some shorts to change into. We’re all guys here so I really don’t’ care if someone’s in my room while I get changed.
He chuckled and I heard him come in the rest of the way and noticed him wander over to my desk out of the corner of my eye, “I was just coming to tell you that the bathroom is free if you want to take a shower tonight.”
“I’ll take one when I get back from my last class. It’s my martial arts class anyways, and considering that I didn’t do much today there’s really no point in taking a shower.” I responded and finished pulling up my shorts and then threw my clothes into my hamper…I should do laundry tomorrow too.
“Makes sense.” Toshiro said as he opened up my book form dad. One thing that I’ve noticed with Toshiro that he’s not all that great with playing video games, but he can easily solve puzzles and it is a very fast reading. He’s also amazing at remembering things, like he has a photographic memory or something. “At least the author has a sense of humor and tries to make this more enjoyable to read, even just from this little blurb it sounds like it could be an interesting read.” Shiro chuckled.
“That’s good. I haven’t even opened it to look at it since dad gave it to me.” I said sitting down on my bed.
“You’ll have to let me skim through it when your done with it.” He closed it and stood up straight, “Good night Sasuke.” He smiled happily.
“I’ll try to remember that.” I laughed lightly as I watched him walk back to the door and he hit the light switch for me. “Good night Shiro.” I said as his piercing ice blue eyes looked back at me.
“See you in the morning.” His kind hearted smile never left his face as he grabbed the handle to my door and closed it behind him.
I crawled into bed and was out like a light in no time at all. I don’t remember dreaming of anything so I guess it was nothing all that important…or it was something fucking awesome and there’s no way that I’ll ever remember it as much as I want to. My first class went by like a breeze. And I actually didn’t realize that Nero was in my writing class with me. He was trying not to fall asleep in class…it looked like something was wrong with him. Not like he was sick, but more so like he was hurting and in pain…should I talk with him…he was a dick to me yesterday…but I’m not the kind of person to ignore someone when they look like shit.
Once class was over I was able to pack my stuff up fast enough and I ran after Nero. “Nero wait up a minuet.” I called out to him down the hall as I weaved my way through other students.
Thankfully he did stop but when he turned to look at me he did not look happy, he looked pissed, “What the hell do you want Kaisai?”
“I was just wondering if you were okay. You were almost falling asleep in class and you look like you’re in pain.” I said bluntly to him. For a moment his expression turned to shocked then went to a fuck off expression that I’ve gotten from a lot of people before.
“Why do you fucking care? We’re not friends, why should you give two flying flaming rats fucking asses if I’m falling asleep in class.” He glared down at me.
“Nero please lose the attitude and talk to me, I know that we kinda got off on the wrong foot yesterday, but I remember what you said under your breath yesterday about no one being your friend. If you’re in a dorm that you’re getting beaten up in you need to go to my father and tell him what’s going on. Then you can also switch out of that dorm and into a different one.” I said to him. He just stared at me as other students passed by us and he continued to stare like a cat. His bright green eyes had a have a ring of gold around his pupil. Both his ears were pierced and had small golden hoops in them and he had a lip ring that was on the left side of his lip. It kinda looks like he may be planning on getting another one with where that one is placed.
Finally, the staring contested ended when he clicked his tongue and looked away from me, “I can handle myself.” He started walking away from me and out of instinct I accidently grabbed his wrist to stop him from walking.
“Nero please let me help. I want to be a friend. I want to show you that you don’t have to hate everyone.” Out of the corner of my eye I can see my veins glowing a bright white. I held onto his wrist for two long, damn it please don’t hate me.
He pulled his wrist away from me and didn’t look back at me, he didn’t say anything to me, he just…walked away. “H-Hey.” I ran after him and caught up. By this time the glowing has pretty much faded. “If you do decide to move dorms my dorm has an open room. It’s dorm 201. You’re always welcome to come by and hang out too.”
Nero didn’t walk away from me he just turned his head away so he couldn’t look at me. I think I heard him mumble I’ll think about it but I’m not too sure. I don’t think he knows about how moon elementals get their elements, but for now at least he doesn’t need to know. At least it seems like he’s taking what I said to heart and he’s thinking about it instead of being stubborn and ignoring me all together.
“I-I just wanted to let you know that. I have to head to my next class, see ya later.” I said waving a little and then heading off in the opposite direction to go to my martial arts class. I hope that I heard him right and that he will actually think about it.
