Trying to be a Supportive Friend Here...

Chapter 59: Trying to be a Supportive Friend Here…

“That was a lot more fun than I thought it was going to be,” Sean snickered as he sprawled out on my bed. It’s Monday night, classes were back in session and Sean and I spared for his practice. He’s been getting better with his own combos. I don’t know if I should be happy or a bit jealous with how fast he’s moving.

“It was,” I smile and chuckle a bit, “You’re getting a lot better too.”

“Thanks,” He had a big shit eating grin on his face.

Can you believe that we’re in fall already?” I sighed looking out the window.

“It’s fuckin’ crazy. Time sure is flying that’s for sure,” I look back at him to see the smile fade from his lips and his happy expression sadden.

“What’s wrong?” I ask a bit confused with his sudden change of mood.

“Nothing,” He muttered, “I was just wondering what Chris is up to is all. And where he is.” He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, “I wonder how the Carlson’s are doing if they even remember me, just a bunch of things ya know.”

I nod, “I know. When you were still on earth I thought a lot about that too. If you were doing okay, how I would I even be able to talk to you again if we met. But everything happens for a reason, right?”

“It does, but still, it’s one of those…especially with Chris…” His voice cracks a bit and he flops his forearm over his eyes, “Why did he have to tell me just days before everything happened? Why couldn’t he have told me sooner? Why is it that he couldn’t come back with us? There’s just so many things I wanna ask him and I can’t, ya know?”

“If there was a way that we could get him back here just so he could answer questions, I would do it. But we don’t even know where to start looking.”

“I know, I know, sorry, I didn’t mean to break down a bit like that,” He apologized.

“You don’t have to apologize, you didn’t even really break down. It’s natural to want to know more.”

“I know, but I don’t like to show so much like that,” Turning his back to me I sighed.

“Even around me?” I rose a brow even though I know he can’t see it. He stayed silent, “I know,” I mutter leaning back on my hands and looking up at the ceiling.

It stayed quiet between the two of us for a while we just listened to the crickets outside since I had my window open. Eventually, I let my arms slide out from under me and I laid there on my back. I hear Sean’s slow soft breathing. He fell asleep. I’ll just leave him be and get him up later. Closing my eyes and relaxing into my mattress I feel myself slowly drift off to sleep.

“Wake up damn it,” I open my eyes to Sean sitting over me.

“How long was I out?” I groan bring my hands up and rubbing my eyes. Sean shifts so I can sit up.

“About a half an hour or so.” He shrugged.

“You fell asleep first so I don’t wanna hear it,” I chuckle.

“I did not,” He protested.

“Did too.”

“Did not.”

“Did too.”

The sound of clapping echoed around my room, which made us stop arguing. We both stood up and looked around. “Where the hell is that coming from?” Sean asked and I shook my head.

“I have no idea.”

It was a man that started laughing. It wasn’t so much of a laughter as it was a throat giggle that echoed around us as well. “I’m fed up with this shit, come out already and show yourself damn it!” Sean demanded.

“That language still hasn’t changed a bit Sean,” Uncle Chris’s voice echoed around us as a ripple in space formed and then uncle appeared.

“Why are you here?” I ask in disbelief. How did he make it into the campus without getting caught? Someone should have seen him. He’s never seen my room so he would have had to hop out of a portal to even find my dorm in the first place.

He chuckled and ran his fingers through his hair, “You’re still as naïve as ever Sasuke. Not even my brother can touch me, what do you think you can do?” He smirked.

“I’m not naïve. You come into my room unannounced and confuse the hell out of us what you’re saying.”

“If you’ve come here to talk then we’ll listen if not then we want an explanation,” Sean added in staying calm.

“Why should I tell you anything Sean my boy, haven’t you spent your entire life in the dark anyway?” Uncle snickered and I clenched my fists.

“Then why weren’t you in his life? Why weren’t you there for him like a father? Why have you made him suffer? If you love him why do you do the things you do? Why didn’t you leave Sean with mom and dad so he could be my older brother instead of being left alone? WHY ARE YOU BEING FOR GOD DAMN FUCKING HEARTLESS?” I scream at the top of my lungs by the end of it and start breathing heavily as tears start to fill my vision, “Why of all times would you tell Sean that you’re his father and then just leave him when he needs you the most? Why did you do the things you did?”

“Sasuke,” Sean mumbled.

“It’s not fair uncle,” I start and Sean grabs my wrist to stop me. I turn around and look at him.

“Stop, please,” He says.

“Sean, you’re very outspoken and always say what’s on your mind. But, I know it won’t happen with uncle Chris. I know you’ll choke up and not be able to say anything to him. That’s why I’m asking these questions.

“I can speak my mind to him,” Sean protested and I look at him.

“As cute as this bonding moment is, answer your questions is not why I came here,” I turn away from Sean to look at uncle again. I can’t react fast enough before uncle is practically on top of me and I feel a hand around my throat. I’m pushed be my throat and slam down onto the floor. Stars flash in my vision as I try to breathe from my windpipe being crushed from my uncle’s hand as he pushes down on my throat.

“S-Sean,” I get out and uncle starts to snicker.

“Who are you calling for? It’s just the two of us here. There’s no one else, you’re completely alone. You’ve always been alone,” He smiles down at me, an intense glare with a sense of enjoyment is also in his expression. This isn’t the man I know as my uncle.

I look away from him and he’s right, there’s no one here, it’s just a blank space that we’re in. No one’s around, nothing is around, it’s completely empty, “W-what did you do?” I choke out trying to just breathe normally was difficult.

“I did nothing. You’ve isolated yourself. You take on so much and finally it puts so much pressure on you that you just…” He trailed off and I watched him lift his right hand and snap his fingers with a confident smirk. I flinch a bit at the sound. “Oh, that’s right, you choose for this to happen to you. Where you just snap, because you let a pathetic good for nothing weave his way into your heart and let you think he was your best friend just so he could get his way and have that small chance of him becoming an elemental happen.”

I grab uncle’s wrist and pull up on it so I can breathe, “You’re wrong,” I cough, “Sean is NOT pathetic and a good for nothing. He’s my best friend and my cousin. I want him to be happy and have the life that we should have had together in the first place. I did it because I wanted to. I knew the risks I was taking and I’m happy I did.”

It fell silent between us for a few moments before uncle started to chuckle, “You’re so naïve. Don’t you understand that a prodigy of a certain element has never also been a different element before?”

“What does that have to do with this conversation at all?”

“You did it, you helped Sean because deep down in you, you know for a fact that you’re not supposed to be a moon elemental. You couldn’t even get past the basic first skill of an ice elemental.” My heart stung when he pointed that out to me, “You’re pathetic and don’t deserve to be anything other than the fire prodigy. Be happy that I can’t take that away from you as well.” Pushing down more his hand pressed against my throat once more.

“What do you mean?” I asked barely able to even get that out.

He leaned down further with an evil smile spread across his lips. I feel his breath on my ear, “You two are so much fun to play with. It’ll be interesting to see what exactly you two can do. I’ll have to figure out a way to get one of you to come to me.” He started laughing and I looked over at the side of his head through the corner of my eye. The sound of a bell rung in my ear moments before the sound of glass shattering came from under me and I felt myself sink down. Then everything broke and I started falling leaving the image of my uncle behind.

“SASUKE!” I shoot up and bash my head against something hard, falling back to the bed I grab onto my forehead and groan, “God fucking, son of a mother fucker, that fucking hurt,” Sean whined and I opened my eyes to see him clutching his nose and blood seeping between his fingers.

“I’m sorry!” I instantly apologize and scramble up and Shiro comes rushing into the room.

“Is everything okay? What happened?” He asks in a bit of a panic.

Sean stood up and ran out of the room to go to the bathroom drips of blood hitting the floor as he left, “I think Sean was trying to get me up and I shot up and bashed my forehead into his nose really hard and now he’s bleeding,” I explain getting.

“I got him,” Shiro spins on his heels and heads off to the bathroom. I follow him and Sean has his head tipped back and is running his hands under the water and then wiping his face with his wet hand. “Sean, sit down on the tub,” Shiro said walking in, “Sasuke get a washcloth so we can make sure it’s just his nose and not anything else that’s bleeding.”

“R-right,” I go over to the drawer that we keep our washcloths as I swatch Shiro walk Sean back to the tub and makes him sit down.

“Is everything okay up here? I heard swearing and screaming,” Nero asked poking his head in as I look up.

“Everything’s fine, just a bloody nose,” Sean comments sounding stuffed up, “Ah, that’s fucking cold snowflake.”

“No shit, it’s ice numb nut. Now hold still,” Shiro hisses at Sean as I get the washcloth damp and then come over to them and wipe off the rest of the blood as gently as I can.

“So, what exactly happened?” Nero asked.

“I thought that Sasuke was going to have another breakdown because he was heating up the room and acting like he was suffocating,” Sean swallowed, “He wasn’t wake up by just me calling him so I shook him and screamed at him. I know he sits up fast when he wakes up, but it didn’t click and then his forehead collided with my nose.”

“And mouth, your upper lip is split pretty bad,” Shiro adds in.

“I’m sorry,” I apologize as Shiro puts some ice on the damp cloth and I hold it on Sean’s upper lip.

“It not your fault. It’s mine. I know you sit up fast and it was stupid for me to be leaning over you like that,” His voice was muffled from the cloth.

“What was wrong?” Shiro asked and we locked eyes.

“It was just a really bad dream was all,” I mutter and look away from him, “I don’t feel a tightness or anything like that.”

Shiro sighed, “You two are a handful.”

“Sorry, we said in unison.

“Since no one’s dying, I’m going to go back down and keep working on dinner,” Nero commented. I look over my shoulder to see him turn around, “Sean you stayin?”

“I think so,” He answered Shiro finally letting him put his head back down and he took the cloth from me and held it to his mouth.

“Kay sounds good,” Nero waved and left the view of the bathroom.

“You sure you’re okay? We can take you to the infirmary,” I offer and Sean shakes his head.

“It doesn’t feel like my nose is broken or anything. And with the ice, the swelling will go down so it’s not a big deal.”

“I just feel bad,” I look at him concerned.

“Don’t feel bad, it was my own stupidity that this happened. I know better and I still did it. Don’t worry about anything.”

I look down at the floor, “Still, though I want to make it up to you somehow.”

“Then tell me what your bad dream was about. Obviously, something had you worked up while you were sleeping,” I look up and both of them are staring at me intently.

Sighing in defeat I break down and tell them about my dream. Neither of them says a thing during my explanation, “I know that Chris had his crazy moments, but do you really think that he would go that far overboard?” Sean asked as he got up off the tub and washed out the washcloth.

“Your mind was possibly placing someone that you miss with your own fears and combining the two so that there would be a conflict in your own mind so you wouldn’t know what emotion to feel, but at the same time of being hurt you would not want to fight back,” Shiro offered as an explanation.

“But, why Chris of all people?” Sean asks.

“He’s someone who hasn’t been in Sasuke’s life as much as he hasn’t been in yours. So, spending those months with him just like you did, but you were there working under him longer, there is more than likely a longing for both of you to at least be able to see him again every once in a while and by the sounds of it you both want the questions that you have solved and answered.” Toshiro said gesturing to Sean who looked away from him.

“I don’t know if it would make things better or worse, but being able to get those questions answered may or may not help,” I look over at Sean and he’s still looking down at the floor. “I just want to help.”

“I know, and sorry, none of this would have happened if it weren’t for me being tired and making that statement.”

“That’s not particularly true Sean. Sasuke has a very strong bond with you. Even if you hadn’t of made the statement that you want to know how your father is doing the dream may have still happened,” My white-haired best friend comments.

“I don’t want to talk about this anymore,” Sean mutters and pushes past me and walks out of the bathroom. I watch him leave and look at Shiro and he looks down at the floor. Turning around I go after Sean.

“Wait, Sean,” I call after him as he heads down the stairs.

“I’m going back to my dorm,” He said as I skidded to a stop and quickly descend the stairs.

“Why are you running like this? Because you don’t want my help? What’s the reason?” I run over to him and grab his wrist.

“I don’t want your help. I don’t want anyone’s help.” He retorted back at me.

I catch up to him and grab his shoulder and stop him from leaving the house, “Are you fucking kidding me right now Sean? The last fucking thing I want to do is leave you alone.”

“Fuck off Sasuke,” He didn’t spin around but I can feel his body tense.

“No, I’m not going to fuck off Sean,” I glare at him. I watch his body shift and within the blink of an eye, I just manage to turn my head so his fist collides with my right cheek instead of square in my mouth. Clutching onto his shirt I take a step back from the force and retaliate twisting my arm deeper into his shirt I take a swing at him that he blocks so I take the chance to let go of his shirt as he twists my arm tightening my muscles I stop him from twisting my arm any further so he can’t pin me and I punch him in the jaw catching his lip at the same time. He let go of my left and stumbled back. Sean quickly catches his balance and shifts his weight to his left and swings his right foot at me. I block it with my right arm and brace it with my left hand only to have him jump up and nail me in the side of the head with his left. I stumble and blink a few times to get the stars out of my eyes. Before he can leave the house, I squat down and sweep his feet out from under him and then finish tackling him to the ground. I sit on top of him and sock him a few times in the face before he turns the tables on me and flips us over so he’s on top of me and I feel his knuckles slam down into my mouth and then quickly after that twice in my nose.

“AIGHT THAT’S FUCKIN’ ENOUGH YA TWO,” Nero comes into my view and rips Sean up off me. “What-da-fuk-issup-witch-yew?” He said so fast and in such a thick Jersey accent that I didn’t know if I should be frightened or laugh or what. Either way, he’s pissed and I can feel the static in the air on top of he never really lets his New Jersey accent slip out unless he’s really pissed off.

“Sean started the fucking thing. He didn’t want to god damn accept my help,” I retort whipping the warm liquid pools out of my nose.

“BECAUSE I DON’T FUCKING NEED ANY HELP. I DON’T FUCKING NEED ANYONE’S HELP. I’VE BEEN ALONE ALL MY LIFE, WHY THE FUCK START NOW?” Nero instantly put Sean in a headlock and throttled him in the stomach with his knee making Sean go into a coughing fit. The muscles in Nero’s arm that are around Sean’s neck tense up as Sean tries to get out of the hold, “Lemme-tell-ya-somthin’ Sean Wud-ever da-fuk is goin’ through that thick fukin’ head of yews, yew need ta fukin’ give it a royal fukin’ kick in da ass ya hear me? Yer not alone, yews have fukin’ friends that love and care bout ya. Now if I need ta fukin’ dunk yer hear in some war-der then I fukin’ will god damn it.” Nero scolded, “Now Lemme and let everyone in and fukin’ help aight?”

“Okay, okay, okay, just let go so I can fuckin’ breathe god damn it,” Sean choked out trying to pull away at Nero’s arm but he wasn’t budging.

Nero let go of him and Sean started coughing as he dropped to the ground holding onto his throat. Shiro came over to the both of us and created blocks of ice. He handed Nero Sean’s and then he held onto mine so I wouldn’t be making it melt so quickly from both holding onto it and pressing it against my nose to stop the bleeding.

My head is pounding and face is throbbing as we get the bleeding to stop, “Nero, we should get these two to the infirmary,” Shiro sighed.

“Yeah, Ya two hit each other pretty damn hard,” I look over at Sean he has a gash across the bridge of his nose and a few cuts on his lip.

“If we go they’re going to call dad,” I warn Shiro and Nero.

“Well, then it’s going to happen, you both need to get looked at,” There’s no sympathy in Shiro’s words. He’s upset I can tell. He doesn’t like anyone getting into fights and Sean and I just had an all-out, no holds bound, brawl in the middle of the hall.

As much as Sean and I protest Shiro and Nero have none of it. Nero throws Sean over his shoulder and lets him struggle as he walks and Shiro has a firm grip on my wrist as I’m digging my feet into the dirt as he drags me along behind him.

“I swear if you don’t pick up your feet I’m throwing you over my shoulder and carrying you like Nero is to Sean,” He threatens but I continue to dig my heels in the dirt. He lets go of my hand and I stumble back and fall. He then proceeds to walk back to me grab my wrist again and jerk me up and over his shoulder in a very quick and smooth fashion.

“Put me down, I don’t want to go,” I protest and squirm.

“You are going to the infirmary and that’s final Sasuke,” Shiro put his foot down and then his phone started ringing. Kyo’s on the other end and he explains why there’s blood on the floor in the main hall to him. I give up on protesting because Shiro keeps slapping and pinching my thighs the more I protest. We make it to the infirmary and Mrs. Strife makes us sit down on a couple of chairs and she works on Sean first since he can breathe while the water is on his face so she can just hold it on his entire face instead of having to concentrate on certain areas at a time like mine. Like I thought one of the other nurses called dad.

“What happened?” Dad asked as he stood in front of both me and Sean with his arms crossed and I very stern expression.

I explained to dad about the dream that I had first and how Sean originally got a bloody nose and that we got him fixed up, then that we got into an argument and it turned into a fistfight.

Dad sighed heavily and rubbed his temples as he listened to me. Sean stayed quiet and didn’t interject with the explanation, “What’s your side, Sean?”

“I ain’t got nothing to add. Sasuke pretty much said it all. I punched him because I was pissed, it’s that simple,” Sean shrugged but he couldn’t look at dad at all.

“Getting into fights will not solve problems. Both of you know better,” Dad scolded.

“Last time I checked John, you and Chris got in quite a bit of fight when I first met you. So, wouldn’t you say that the apples didn’t fall far from the tree?” Mrs. Strife giggled.

“No, they don’t, clearly,” Dad groaned in frustration, “With how stubborn the two of you are if Nero and Toshiro weren’t there to break it up I’m sure one of you would have ended up with a broken arm or something broken.”

“Sorry,” We both say at the same time.

“You both are reckless and stubborn to a fault,” Dad continues.

“Again, not far from the tree John,” Mrs. Strife giggles and dad turns and glares at her as she passes by us carrying fresh linen.

“Anyways, my point is, the two of you are grounded, no if’s and or buts will get you out of it and there is no getting off early for good behavior.”

What??? WHY?” Sean protests, “Why the fuck are we being treated like children?”

“Because you are my children and be happy I’m not going further,” Dad answered and I can hear how annoyed he is in his answer.

“I’m not your child,” Sean said as he stood up.

“YOU’RE NOT MY FUCKING FATHER.” Sean retaliated and grabbed a hold of dad’s shirt.

“YOU’RE STILL A PART OF THIS GOD DAMN FAMILY AND YOUR PARENTS AREN’T HERE THEREFOR YOU ARE MY CHILD AND YOU WILL LISTEN TO ME. GOD DAMN IT SEAN. I’M SORRY ABOUT WHAT FUCKING HAPPENED BACK THEN AND I CAN’T CHANGE THE PAST,” Dad grabbed Sean’s hands and ripped them off his shirt and held onto them, “But, you’re here now, so let us make it right. Don’t shut any of us out. Don’t try to handle problems on your own if you can help it. Yui and I think of you as our son. You’re not alone Sean, you don’t have to keep walls up and keep everyone at a distance.”

I stayed quiet as dad took Sean in his arms and hugged him tightly, “I’m sorry,” Sean’s voice is muffled into dad’s shoulder. I watch as Sean’s arms begin to tremble and lift up and wrap around dad to hug him back.

“You don’t have to be sorry,” Dad said and lifted a hand up and started gently stroking the back of Sean’s head and Sean broke down crying. Dad motioned for me to get up so I did and I hugged Sean from behind. Sean slowly calms down and eventually pushes away from dad and wipes his eyes. “You’re both still grounded, though. There’s no getting out of it.”

“Why do we have to be grounded?” I ask.

“Do you want me to break out the necklaces that research and development have been working on that will lock your elements away until I remove them?” He raises an eyebrow at the both of us and I rapidly shook my head.

“What the fuck do you mean?” Sean asked.

“It’s a necklace that won’t let us use our elements no matter what until the person who put it on takes it off,” I explain to him and Sean looks at me really confused.

“Grounded for a month, both of you. If the two of you slip up during the month you’re getting the necklaces and you’re living at home for two months,” Dad put a hand on my back and his other on Sean’s, “Now come on. I’m walking you two back to your dorms and you’re going right to your rooms for the night.”

“But, we haven’t had anything to eat yet,” I protest.

“You’re going to eat and then you two are going right to your rooms. I’m not taking you out to eat. You two are to simply go to class and to your extra sessions then go right back to your dorms for the night. No going out with your friends, no late night parties, even though I know for a fact neither of you actually go to the parties that I’ve had to break up on campus. But, you two get the point.”

“Yes,” I sigh.

“Fiiiiiine,” Sean groans, “If Sasuke’s my younger brother can I beat him up still?”

“No, no beating either other up.”

“But didn’t you do that to uncle when you were kids?” I ask curiously.

“That’s beside the point.”

“No, it’s not,” Sean snickers.

“You’re NOT beating each other up, end of discussion.”

“But what if he reeeeeaaaallllyyyy deserves it?”

“Sean,” I retort.

“What?” He asks like he did nothing wrong.

“Dad said no.”

“Did he really now?”

“Yes, I did,” Dad sighed.

“Ha! See I can beat you up!”

“That’s not what I said, Sean,” Dad speaks up.

“But you just said yes!” Sean looks up slightly at dad.

“No, means no Sean,” Dad said.

“Oh, come on,” He whines.

“Dad said no.” I butt in.

“No one asked you Sasuke.”

“He doesn’t need to.”

“Yes, he does.”

“No, he doesn’t.”

“ALRIGHT, nope you two are getting the necklaces, I’m not dealing with this. The two of you are living at home. I clearly can’t trust you two to act your age.”

“But Daaad,” I whine.

“No, no buts,” Dad started digging in his pockets.

“Run,” I look at Sean.

“Run,” He nods in agreement.

“Bye, dad love you, good night!” I yell and Sean and I take off running.

Sean and I ran and in the blink of an eye dad’s in front of us the two of us break off. I think I get past dad, but instead, I get jerked back and tossed to the ground. Sean didn’t make it past him either and was tossed down on the ground next to me. In one swift motion, dad pulled two black ribbons like things out of his pocket and pressed them against mine and Sean’s necks. The black ribbon latched around my neck like it was a choker and it heated up slightly and it feels like my body is being drained.

“Whhhhyyyy,” I whine as I look up at my father.

“Starting tomorrow you two are coming back home for the month,” Dad looked down at us.

“Why do I feel like my entire body fell asleep?”

“Because it’s your element being locked.”

“HA, I fuckin’ spent a good part of my life not having my element. Do ya think this is gonna phase me?” Sean comments.

“It will,” Dad puts his hands on his hips. Sasuke for the soul weapons class you’ll be strictly using the practice weapons. If you two behave, I’ll take the necklaces off at the end of the week. Have a good night you two. Sean, I’ll see you after school if I don’t see you around campus and Sasuke I’ll see you bright and early for class.”

I sit up not happy about any of this, “Night dad,” I grumble.

“Good night boys.” And in a blink dad was gone.

This is the worst, the absolute worst.
