Chapter Twenty-One

Colton was exhausted. He and Audra had spent literally the entire past two days picking out their prom outfits. They had just returned home around ten p.m. - which was five minutes ago. They had a movie playing in the background, but they were too tired to pay much attention.

The two of them were lying on the bed of incredibly comfortable animal skins in the living room with a single bowl of cookie dough ice cream with whipped cream, caramel sauce, cherry sauce and cherries that they were sharing. He couldn’t help but notice that, the longer they are ice cream, the colder Audra seemed to get.

After a few minutes more of this, Colton laughed softly and reached forward, cupping her cheek and turning her head towards him before leaning forward and kissing her. He pulled away after a minute, running his tongue over his lips to get the caramel sauce that was on her lips off his, smiling at her surprised expression.

“Your mouth is cold,” he said after a minute with a shrug, smiling innocently. “Plus you had some caramel sauce on your lips. And you’re freezing. I’ll finish off the remaining bit of the ice cream since there’s just a small bite left, and then we should get changed and head to bed. Tomorrow we have school. We can’t take any more sick days.”

Audra pouted, putting one of the French braids in her hair behind her. “But I want to stay up with you…”

He nodded, chuckling lightly as he reached up to brush some loose, curly strands out of her face. “Me too. But I’m exhausted, and I want to go to sleep with you in my arms. Does that sound alright with you?”

She smiled tiredly at him. “That sounds really nice right now, not gonna lie… Can I borrow your sweatshirt again?”

He nodded, quickly finishing off the ice cream and setting it on the coffee table. “Of course you can. You don’t have to ask me to borrow it. Okay, Auds?”

She nodded. “Okay.”

He reached forward and wrapped his arms around her, then stood, walking with her up the stairs to change.

She put on his largest, white sweatshirt with a pair of tight black spandex shorts underneath. He decided to match her outfit with his white shirt and black shorts. Once changed, he ran a hand through his rusty red hair before walking over and sweeping her off her feet, slinging her over his shoulder before taking off down the stairs.

She squealed in excitement and kicked her legs a little bit, holding in tightly to his shirt. “Colt!” she laughed.

He laughed as well. After he made it to the living room, he spun her around in both directions before carefully dropping her on the bed of animal skins. Then he laid down on top of her and pressed a kiss to her temple, cheek, ear and lips before rolling over onto his side, holding her as close to him as he dared and burying his face in the crook of her neck.

She smiled at him and, after lifting his head up, gently kissed his forehead, resting her forehead against his afterwards as she closed her eyes. She felt one of the Hydra heads form faintly and turn off the lights in the living room so that they could sleep.

Colton smiled a little, gazing into her face for a few moments before closing his own eyes, tightening his grasp on her.

“I love you, Colt,” Audra murmured.

He felt his heart skip a few beats as he opened his eyes again to meet her blue ones. After a moment, he beamed.

“I love you, too, Auds.”

And then the two of them fell asleep.
