The party was in full swing. It was the night of winter prom. The chateau was a large, spacious and luxurious place with a wide open courtyard. In the center of it all was a grand marble fountain that Colton was standing beside, looking for Audra.
Nobody knew - other than their friends Mark, Dalton and Ethan - that they were back together. So according to everyone else, he was single.
He had been standing there for half an hour, now, with still no sign of her. Jess and her posse took notice, and made their way over to him.
Once Jess was standing beside him, she smiled flirtatiously at him. “Hey Colton,” she said as cute as she possibly could (it was the exact opposite of that, if you must know). “You looked lonely.”
He didn’t even spare her a glance. “I’m not. I’m looking for someone.”
She scoffed. “That freak, I assume? She was toxic, hunny-bun.”
“Not as toxic as your face,” he responded simply.
Her posse gasped softly.
It didn’t seem to faze their leader.
She reached forward and put a hand on his arm. “She’s not coming. You need to move on.” She took a step closer to him, way past his boundaries. “But I’m here for you. You can do whatever it is that you please. Anything to get your mind off of-“
Colton pulled his arm away from her as his gaze fell on Audra, making her way to him like a goddess with a smile on her face.
She had on the long, insanely flowy dress they had picked out that made her look like she was from Ancient Greece. Light blue fabric wrapped around her chest low enough not to reveal anything scandalous, a long matching cape attached to the top of the dress with silver buckles, with sleeves of lace that reached down and hooked around her middle fingers. A golden blue sash was tied around her waist, and her hair done up in a beautiful loose bun with a silver circlet crown with leaves as a design in her hair. The promise ring he bought her was hanging from her neck in the same silver chain
Everyone in the courtyard of the chateau fell silent.
It started to snow.
He beamed and took off running towards her only seconds later, wrapping his arms around her waist and picking her up as he spun her around in the air. Once he set her down, he leaned forward and, not caring that everyone was watching, kissed her gently - which she returned - reaching up with one hand to cup her cheek while the other arm was still secured around her waist.
After another few moments, he pulled away from her, still grinning from ear to ear. “You look stunning,” he said once he caught his breath.
Audra beamed. “Thanks. Same goes to you.”
He flushed a little and glanced away for a brief moment before staring back into her eyes, still caressing her cheek. “Thank you.”
She nodded, then reached up and messed up his perfect rusty red hair with a laugh.
He laughed with her as he remembered weeks ago when she said she would mess up his hair if he styled it.
“Oh my gosh, I love you,” Audra said suddenly after a moment.
He bent and kissed her cheek. “And I love you too.”
“Alright, alright!” came Dalton’s voice over the speakers. He must’ve found a microphone somewhere. “It’s time to reveal the king and queen of this year’s winter prom!” He waited another two seconds, then laughed. “As if it wasn’t obvious, it’s our own Colton Danvers and Audra Scamander! Who, for those who don’t understand the insane amount of PDA that came from them not even two minutes ago, are back together!”
Everyone cheered and started clapping. One of the teachers facilitating the event came forward and put the crown’s on their heads before they left again.
“As usual, they will share their first dance - which they’d better hurry up and do! Because once they’re done, we’re all going inside because it’s snowing and I’m literally gonna freeze to death. Plus I would like to continue dancing with my boyfriend.” Dalton winked at Colton and Audra, then handed the microphone off to someone before dramatically running over to where a guy with platinum blond hair was waiting.
Colton laughed softly, then, as the music started, put his hands on her waist while she folded her hands behind his neck, and started leading her in a waltz, holding her close.
The snow that was falling was sticking in Audra’s hair, and he was sure the same thing was happening to him too. He smiled softly at her, and leaned forward, whispering sweet nothings into her ear that made her laugh softly.
Before either of them knew it, others had started in on the dance, as was tradition for their school, and by the end of the song, everyone was running to go to the ballroom within the large chateau.
Everyone except for Colton and Audra.
Colton has taken her hand and led her out to a balcony that overlooked the mountains, the floor dusted with snow. The music could be heard clearly, even though it was on the bottom floor and several rooms away. He led her in another dance, and when the song changed to a more mellow song, he pulled away a little. He started to feel rather nervous.
Audra’s brows furrowed a little as she reached up and gently brushed some strands of his hair out of his face. “Colt?”
He smiled almost shyly and glanced away for a moment, then looked back at her. “Audra, I…” He took a deep breath, slowly letting it back out a few moments later. “Look, I know that we’re not done with our senior year yet, and that we’ve only been dating for a few months… And I know these past few weeks have been crazy, but… I don’t want what happened in those two weeks to happen again. That time without you made me realize that I don’t want to ever be away from you like that again. I can’t promise you that things will be easy or go as planned, but I want this - more than anything.”
He let out a shaky breath. “What I’m trying to ask is if you’ll marry? I don’t have a ring for you except for the promise ring you wear around your neck. I- I understand it you don’t want this, or at least not yet. But I don’t know what I’d do without you. Audra, I love you, and I always will. I want to be with you forever, and not just because of the vow. I want to start a family with you, and be there with you when you need it most, and to always be with you. Do you want that too?” he asked hesitantly, hopeful that she says what he wants her to say.
Audra stared at him for a few brief moments with wide eyes, then beamed and nodded. “I do. I really, really do.”
His eyes widened in disbelief. “You do? Does this mean that-“
He never got to finish what he was saying as Audra laughed softly, then stood up a little taller and kissed him, which he gladly returned, hardly able to believe what had just happened. But he knew deep down that this would be the start of something great, and that he was the happiest he’d ever been.
