“I’m so sorry,” Amelia said as she maneuvered her car through the interstate.
“Matthew drove quite a hard bargain to let me go.”
Matthew had refused to let her go even after she convinced him that Cain was indeed her mate. He complained about her leaving so soon to another clan and another state.
Matthew, along with the rest of her clan had been shattered to see her leave. They finally recognized the necessity of a witch among them, which made Matthew charge Cain a large quantity of beef.
She would miss everyone. Particularly the kids she taught, but this was the life she always wanted.
Cain shrugged and grinned, seated beside her at the passenger’s seat. “You’re more than worth it. I would have given more had he pressed for it.”
A warm flush spread throughout her body at his words. She was twenty-five years old for Pete’s sake. At some point, she was going to have to get used to hearing such terms from him and stop blushing every time she did.
She hadn’t thought that she would ever find love outside her clan, but it was time to leap into the unknown.
Love? Isn’t that too soon? Amelia laughed inwardly and cast a sidelong glance at Cain.
There was no use denying it. She was already head over heels in love with him. She guessed that was the point of the mark. It was actually like love at first sight.
She couldn’t wait to meet his pack, but at the same time, she couldn’t help feeling nervous. What if they didn’t like her? What if she wasn’t accepted because she wasn’t a part of their clan? What if she isn’t the Luna they expect? Cain is the leader of his pack and it’s important who his Luna was. Perhaps it wasn’t acceptable for someone from another clan to be a Luna in their tribe.
“You’re worrying over nothing,” Cain suddenly told her.
She turned to look at him in surprise before shifting her gaze back to the road.
“You can hear my thoughts?”
“No, not yet anyway. But I could sense your nervousness through our bond.” He chuckled. “It’s so thick; the sharpest knife in the world wouldn’t cut it.”
She sighed with unease. “I can’t help it.”
He took her hand and gripped it hard. “You’re my other half and my Luna. Their Luna. Nothing can change that. My people will love you. You don’t have to worry.”
She nodded, struggling to put aside her nervousness. She let out a deep breath when she saw the Roswell signboard up ahead.
This was it.
They drove into the small picturesque town that was quite like Chesterfield. The few residents waved at Cain and stared at her with curiosity. She offered them a shy smile as Cain gave her directions to his ranch, which was on the outskirts of the small town. She saw other plantations, although smaller, as she drove by. She already started to feel a sense of belonging as she drove through the streets.
“Everyone usually sleeps in after the full moon festival. That’s why there are only a few members around.”
She knew that all too well. It was the same with her clan.
“Wow! Is this your ranch?” she exclaimed as she drove through the black gates. Amelia was blown away by the size of his ranch when she reached it.
Cain laughed. “Our ranch. Yes, it’s our greatest employer of labor. I’ve inherited it from my father. He was still Alpha when we came here.”
She drove in front of the ranch house and stopped. Ahead, across the fields, she could see tractors and a few people out about.
“We’ll have to wait for a few hours until everyone is awake to call a meeting. But before then, I’ll fill you in on your role as Luna.”
Cain got her bags out of her car. Amelia smiled and followed Cain up the porch steps. He put her bags inside and closed the door. This confused her but he completely stunned her by swinging her up in his arms bridal style before opening the front door once again.
“Welcome to our home, mate.”
