Chapter 9

Cain and Amelia both woke up early and sat down to have breakfast together.

“So, what’s your schedule for today?” Cain asked and took a bite from his toast.

Amelia smiled at him and sipped from her cup of coffee. “I have a class with 5th Grade pupils this morning. Later, I’ll babysit Grace Hayes’s children while she has a date with her mate. Then, Susie Peters and I will head to Denver to go shopping for her wedding.”

Cain couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face. It was only two weeks since she became the Luna, yet she took on the role as if she had done it all her life.

Some people had to get used to the idea of a Luna from another clan. When he told them about the mark, none of them argued.

“These things are kind of weird. They happen in the least likely places,” Gabe had said with awe. His parents had experienced it.

Cain could see that other Omega breeders and she-wolves were disappointed. But Amelia simply was his mate. It just couldn’t be helped. Only Hannah seemed unbothered about it from the get-go, and she had befriended Amelia.

Cain found it very hard keeping his hands to himself, but he was determined to do so. Not that they were going to breed yet, but he knew Amelia needed time to adjust. They were taking time to get to know each other. He struggled every day with his wolf waiting to claim her for himself.

He wanted to ask her to marry him romantically instead of taking for granted that they were mates and assuming there was no need to ask her. He desired Amelia to be his bride ‘officially.’ He had it all planned. He would take her sightseeing in the Colorado Mountains. They would have a picnic, wine, and he would pop the question. The emerald ring he bought her matched the color of her eyes. It was practically burning a hole inside his pocket.

“What about you?” she inquired quietly.

“We have a lot of work to do at the ranch today. It’s foaling season, so we have to be on hand to make sure everything goes smoothly.”

They would most likely not get to see each other until the evening, but that wouldn’t stop them from communicating. Most of the day, they texted and called each other. Every day he sent her flowers and chocolates to the local school, where she had taken a teaching position.

People spoke highly of her wherever he went, and it made him feel proud of her. He had to admit that he felt more for Amelia than he ever did for Sarah. He had loved his late wife, but he loved Amelia more and was in love with her.

“I guess we’ll meet after I get back from Denver,” she said and rose from the table.

Although she had a full figure, he had noticed that she wasn’t much of an eater.

“Please be careful today,” he said worriedly.

Weird things had started happening around Amelia, and she sensed danger around her. Weeks ago, the brakes in her car gave out, and she almost had an accident. A few days later, there was a fire in the school she works, and she was locked in her classroom without any means of escape until Cain came to rescue her. Luckily no one got hurt.

One morning after their return from their usual morning run in wolf form, Amelia’s senses discovered a venomous spider in her clothes. If she had worn them and got stung, she would be lying on her deathbed presently. Cain didn’t think that even the pack witch would have been able to save her.

If he didn’t know his clan members, he would have already accused someone of trying to harm Amelia. But he wasn’t sure and didn’t have proof. He assigned someone to watch over her since he couldn’t be by her side all the time; he had Alpha duties to handle.

Cain didn’t tell her he assigned her bodyguard and hoped that she couldn’t read his thoughts concerning it. He didn’t want to worry her while he tried to find out what was going on.

“I will,” she replied with a smile and walked over to sit on his lap.

She threw her arms around him and gave him a satisfying kiss. “Don’t worry about me, my Alpha King.”

He chuckled. He loved her nickname for him. Loving her was so fulfilling. He didn’t know what he would do if anything happened to her. He felt more for her in such a short time his heart wouldn’t recover from it. He swore to keep her safe at all costs. His Luna. His mate. His other half. The moon of his wolf. His breeder.
