Chapter 24:Don’t be
Owen woke up the next morning. Daveigh was asleep, and it was still early. He stared out the window. His phone rang. Owen cursed his loud ringtone and picked up immediately, barely noting that it was an unknown number.
“Who is this?” Owen asked.
“I’m glad you miss me enough to answer a call from a strange number at this hour.” The voice answered.
There was a silence. Owen was dumbstruck. He tried to form words, and nothing came. He heard the person on the other side breathe. When he found words, they swaggered dryly from his lips.
“I am so sorry.” Owen said.
“I am so sorry… I’m so sorry... I don’t know if I could ever say it enough, I don’t know how to make it any better… I am so sorry.”
“Just come home, we can find a way around this, we can make this okay, just please come home, or tell me where you are and I’ll fetch you, Evangeline…”
The number hung up. Owen was clutching the phone hard. Daveigh didn’t wake up. But he gritted his teeth. He screamed internally and lay back down on the bed, angrily staring at the ceiling.
