Chapter 26: Why are you at a party if you’re sad?
Morgan sat by himself. He held a picture of Lisa, Owen and himself. He felt helpless. He sighed heavily. He closed his eyes and remembered a night.
“Morgan!” Lisa smiled. “Snap out of it! We’re at a party, and we’re drunk, and you’re acting all uptight!”
“Oh, sorry. You’re right.” Morgan smiled falsely.
“What’s wrong?” She frowned.
“You aren’t happy.”
“Of course I am.”
“Then why aren’t you with your friends?”
“I needed some fresh air.”
“It’s Duke, I know. He smells like asshole.” She giggled as a hint of smile draw across his face. “Seriously though, what’s up? Even Owen’s going nuts. Introverted little Owen. What am I going to do with him?” Morgan’s face dropped.
“Marry him, have kids and live a great life.”
“What, where did that come from?” Lisa blushed.
“Don’t even pretend you don’t like him. Because I know for a fact that you’re madly in love with Owen.”
“That obvious, huh?” She sighed. “And he just won’t fucking notice me.”
“Ignorance is bliss.”
“You haven’t answered my question.”
“Why are you avoiding us? Or me specifically, actually.”
“Maybe I’m giving you a chance to change your answer.”
“I don’t have one.” Morgan sneered.
“Look me in the eyes and tell me you don’t have feelings for me and that you aren’t jealous and I’ll leave you alone out here.” She said. Morgan stared away, and then gritted his teeth.
“I don’t have feelings for you. You and Owen belong together.”
“And you didn’t make eye-contact once, you lying fuck.” She said.
“I’m not going to say it. If I do, it ruins everything and then… And then…”
“And what, we can’t be friends anymore? Oh you have wet dreams about me, I’m so offended! I think I’ll get over it. Morgan… I love you. Not the way you’d want me to, and I know you have feelings for me. But I can’t reciprocate those feelings. And when I see you like this, I wish I could, I really do wish I could. But I just can’t. You’re a good guy, Morgs.” Lisa hugged him. “And I am jealous of the girl who finally gets you, because I wish I could be with a good guy, but I can’t be with you.”
Morgan kissed her gently. It didn’t last long. Lisa opened her eyes and he was walking away. But she didn’t dislike it. She didn’t know if she liked it, but she knew that she didn’t dislike it. She caught Morgan by the hand.
“Don’t ever, ever do that again. But I’m going to let you have that one. First and last time. I should say sorry. Because any other girl would have dropped to their knees from that stunt and I’m the one asshole you shouldn’t have fallen for. But you did. And I’m sorry.”
“But that’s yours. You can keep it. Put it in a bubble, where it doesn’t exist in this world; replace that memory with something else. But you know what I want you to do with that bubble?”
“Put this in it as well.”
Lisa kissed him softly.
He opened his eyes. His back was towards the bed and the picture was still in his hands. Morgan sighed. He fumbled on his bedside table for his phone, and eventually fumbled it into his hands. He called Owen.
“The only way you’ll ever find Drake or Alyssa is if you can get close to one of them and touch a piece of their bare skin. That’s all I can do for you.”
“Morgan, if you called me four hours earlier.”
“He was just here.”
