Chapter 29: The Trace
“Morgan, this actually really fucking hurts.” Owen grimaced.
“Stop being such a whiner. Didn’t you want to get lyrics tattooed on your arm?”
“I was sixteen and My Chemical Romance hadn’t broken up yet.”
“And this is just slightly more painful. Than the tattoo, not the break up. The break up hurt me a whole lot more.”
Owen felt his phone vibrate.
“Ah crap. This better be important.” Owen scowled.
“Leave it dude, it can wait.”
“This is delicate work. I don’t want you fangirling over Stefan and Elena.”
“You’re a dick. Now I’m taking this phone call.”
“Whatever, but this really is delicate work though. Don’t get too worked up.” Morgan gave Owen’s hand a squeeze. Owen gritted his teeth, but gently worked his phone from his pocket. It was about to go dead. It was an unknown number, and Owen answered immediately.
“Evangeline? Eva, listen, don’t hang up.”
“Sorry kiddo. It’s just me.”
“Hey. It’s good to hear your voice.” She spoke softly. He heard a small sigh of relief.
“Please tell me you’re okay.”
“Owen, thank you so much. For everything. For picking up.”
“You are not going to do this to me. I am not going to lose you too. I’ll come find you, just keep talking, we can figure this out.”
“Maybe if we met under different circumstances… I think I’d have fallen in love with you. Maybe I already have. I dunno. I kinda can’t think straight right now.”
“Imagine we got married. Alyssa Cavalier. It sounds so stupid. You should take my last name.” He could hear her start to cry.
“We can take him. We can do it. We have a plan. Just tell me where you are. I can save you. Just please, for fuck’s sake, please just don’t hang up. I made you a promise.”
“This is what I mean. Once upon a time I knew a guy like you. Although he ruined my life. Ruined a whole lot of lives in fact. I think I’ll die cursing his name.”
“No one is dying. You either tell me where you are Alyssa or when I finally get to you I am going to… I don’t even know.”
“I think I’m a little bit in love with you.”
“Say that to my face.”
“I don’t even know how much time I have. I’ll probably be dead within the next few minutes.”
“Where. Are. You.” Owen spat out.
“I… I think I’m in my house. Everything is kind of blurry. Don’t come. He’ll use you to hurt me. He’ll use Daveigh and Morgan to hurt you. Please, just let me go.” Owen gritted his teeth. He suddenly felt reckless.
“Listen to me. I am going to save you. Don’t give up. I swear I won’t ever give up on you. Wait for me, okay? I’ll find you.” Owen said, aware of Morgan’s presence.
“Please don’t come.” Alyssa said, genuinely fearful.
“I am going to kill him.”
“Owen, listen, please-…”
The line went dead. Owen gritted his teeth. Morgan looked at him.
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.” Owen lied.
“We need a plan.”
“Just get this done. Just finish the rune. I’ll call Daveigh and we’ll do this.”
“Okay.” Owen gritted his teeth.
Suddenly, he felt like he needed to do something. Suddenly, he felt like he was the only one who could do something.
