Chapter 30: Bleeding
Immediately after Morgan finished, Owen sprinted home. He had to do something now. He grabbed the baseball bat. He considered the rune suit, but knew he’d need Morgan for it. And Morgan would call him reckless. And she was right. Drake would use Morgan as leverage. They wouldn’t find Drake if he got stabbed again. Owen figured if he was fast enough, he could make it. He got on his bike and cycled as fast as he could to Alyssa’s.
When he arrived, he silently cursed while noticing the state of the place. The door could barely be described as hanging off its hinges. Owen grimaced. It was trashed and torn. Fingernail marks on the porch, and blood on the window. The worst was that it was so far out of town that nobody would notice. He walked inside. It was quiet in an eerie and menacing way. He saw Alyssa’s katana on the floor. Owen yanked out his phone and called the number Alyssa used.
He followed the sound, sprinted the corridor and pushed the guest room door open. The smell hit him first. It was vomit and blood all in one spot. Alyssa’s body. There was blood dripping from her empty eye sockets and her mouth was cut into a bloody frown, lying in a devil’s trap. Owen looked dragged her body out and she cried out and whimpered as he did. He held her first, and she softly sobbed. She began healing. Slowly.
“Everything’s going to be okay.”
“I... Hate you.”
“Fool me twice… Shame on…” She coughed blood. It splurted from her nose and her mouth. Her eyes were still gone.
“You’re so sick, Drake…” She whispered.
“What? Alyssa, it’s me. It’s Owen. You’re okay. You’re safe.”
“Please, stop. Drake, please stop.”
“Alyssa, I promised.”
She went quiet. She weakly stuck one hand out. It touched Owen’s face. She rubbed it through his hair. Her eyes eerily began forming in the sockets; And Owen had to look away for a bit.
The front door fell.
Owen held still. No footsteps. He clutched Alyssa close to him. He felt his own heartbeat. Alyssa whimpered below him. He realised how tight his grip was and loosened up. She looked at him.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“I think he’s gone, I can still get you out.”
“Owen, leave me…”
Owen picked her up and carried her. Quietly down the hallway at first. He thought every step sounded like thunder alerting all nearby to his presence. They made it to the end of the hallway. The door was lying as if it fell backwards. Alyssa tugged his arm and he put her down on her feet. She wrapped an arm around him. They were actually going to make it. Owen looked back. The katana wasn’t there. Alyssa screamed. She tried to throw herself in the way. Owen turned around.
Drake threw it and it pierced his stomach. Owen dropped to his knees.
He couldn’t breathe. The pain was unbearable.
“Owen, so nice to see you. I’d say that I missed you, but clearly my aim is impeccable. But anyway, Alyssa, he has about six minutes of consciousness! God, I have been waiting for this. Now you have a choice! A choice I never got! You can go and be free and I’ll fade into the darkness and become a distant memory. But then Owen dies here and now. You never see the person you love again! Or I call his vampire girlfriend and he becomes an immortal, but… You will never see him again. Or anyone. I will take you to limbo where you will face execution.”
“How long are you going to torture me?” She asked.
“Oh, no, it ends right here, right now. You either suffered as I have or die for him. That’s a better deal than I got. Remember when I just came back? How I didn’t remember anything? I knew there was a reason you were so scared of me. And when it all came back, I wanted to do nothing but hurt you in the worst possible way.”
“I fucking hate you.”
“Then I guess he dies right here and now.” Drake put one hand on the Katana. Owen Feebly stretched his arm out. Drake smiled. Owen closed his hand around Drake’s.
“Kill me. Either way, you sick fuck, I’ll never see your face again.” Alyssa said through her tears. Drake let go.
Owen was bleeding out. Drake felt around Owen’s pockets for his phone. He found it, and called Daveigh.
“Owen’s dying. He’ll probably be dead by the time you get here. Come to Alyssa’s house on the edge of town, 43 Near Street, maybe you can save him. And he chose this for himself. I told him what would happen.” Drake hung up. “I sincerely hope you don’t die, Owen. No point in doubling the punishment.”
Drake turned around, and shoved Alyssa hard. A rift opened behind her and she stumbled into it. Owen watched her go, unable to do anything. And he felt useless. He was going to die, a useless stupid and selfish person. But maybe he’d see Lisa. He could kinda smell her perfume. She always smelled like lavender.
“You’re probably going to come after me. By the time you do, it’ll be too late. But I’ll face you. And I’ll explain it all. If you don’t die, then you are a worthy enemy indeed.”
Owen closed his eyes.
