Chapter 32: Sentiment

Drake cocked his head to one side. Alyssa looked around. It was actually extravagant. It was as if Limbo had never touched this place. She was in the living room of a two story house. It was… Odd. Homely even. She would have liked it, if she knew that she wasn’t going to die here. Drake sat down on the steps. Alyssa was nailed to the wall behind her. One in her forearm, and on the other arm’s hand. One went through her knee, and through her thigh on the other leg. It was painful… But he did nothing further. Drake just sat there. And it would scare Alyssa normally… But he had been sitting there for over an hour. Just staring at her.

“Are you perving over me on top of everything else? You’re so fucking sick.”

“I had a wife. You’re nowhere near my type.”

“How could I forget? Oh wait. She’s been dead for like 19 years.”

Alyssa clenched her teeth. She expected some sort of excruciating pain to envelop her for that… But nothing. Nothing happened. Drake just sat there, with his head tilted to one side, examining her.

“So what, are you going to stare me to death?”

“No.” He said calmly. He rested his arms on his knees. Alyssa noticed something different. He was wearing his wedding ring. It wasn’t impressive. A simple gold band.

“Feeling sentimental?”

“Hmm?”

“You’re wearing your wedding ring.”

“Oh, right. Yes. I am wearing the ring my wife gave me.” Drake almost looked bored. “Were you in the room that night?” He asked.

“Your wedding night? Yes.”

“You know I’m not talking about my wedding.”

“I remember all of it Drake.”

“Replaying it in my mind, I’m struggling to recall exactly what happened.”

“Oh, I understand, so I remind you now, and then you kick my teeth in.”

“Well, I’m not going to kill you, if it’s any consolation.”

“Ah, more torture, glad that some things never change.”

“You love him, don’t you?”

“I don’t have to answer that.”

“I don’t understand why. He’s not the smartest. I suppose he has a certain charm. But I’m serious. I really won’t kill you, and I’d remove those restraints if I didn’t still have a point to prove. I’m actually just waiting… Owen will be here soon.”

“Drake, you promised you’d let him live.”

“I’m not going to touch him. I’m just going to tell him exactly what you did.”

“You really are sick. I didn’t do anything. I don’t deserve any of this.”

“You can tell me that, but man, you probably give yourself one massive emotional beating when I’m looking the other way. He’ll probably forgive you and you’ll pine over a guy hopelessly in love with someone else for eternity. It’s kind of like torture. Not really though, you’ll eventually just leave that town and him.”

“So what you’re saying is you’re going to kill me with boredom?”

“How has no one killed you for just talking? It amazes me.”

“You get away with a lot being as cute as I am. And I have an ass you could bounce a coin off of.”

“As your brother, that makes me want to vomit.”

“If you could die from that, it’d be really nice.”

Drake paused for a long while. He stared down at the floor intensely. “She’s probably so ashamed of me.”

“Disgust, shame, die of whatever you like, just die.”

“You know, I’ve put as much blame on you as I could. Don’t get me wrong, you deserved everything I did to you. Every moment of it. But I’m tired of hating you. I think I’m actually just tired of a lot of things. Sometimes even tired of being alive.”

“Then die.” She said. “Owen didn’t deserve to get dragged into this. You deserve worse just for that.”

“I know. But I have no idea what I did to deserve that which you have done to me. My wife, Alyssa. That was my wife.”

“She wasn’t a saint. She killed a lot of us too.”

“But she took you in as her own. She welcomed you like sister. She loved you like a sister. She told me that you had to be godmother. Even if Delilah wasn’t a saint, Riley was more than that.”

“Drake…”

“I know I said I wasn’t going to kill you, but the way you speak about them… It makes me want to.”

“It wasn’t my fault.”

“Do you honestly believe that?”

“No.”

“Of course you don’t.”

“I can’t change what happened.”

“No. No, you can’t. And I hate you for it. But I… I don’t think I ever stopped to consider her. What Delilah would think of me now, if only she could see me now. She’d be furious. She didn’t hate you though. Dee loved you. I think that’s the only reason I came back. Hating you. And hating Michael. I am filled with more hatred than I know what to do with.”

“What a great brother you are.”

“Well, Owen’s still alive. That puts me one up on you.”

“Do you want me to say I’m sorry? Because, I am. I am sorry about Dee… She was the best sister in law I could have ever asked for and I got her killed and I deserved everything you put me through but just leave everyone else out of this.”

“Don’t apologise. There aren’t enough apologies in the world. But you know what? When I put this ring on, I just started remembering things. I’m doing this for her, Alyssa. You’re alive, and will continue to be alive, because Delilah St. Claire would want you to be, because Delilah St. Claire would hate me even more than she already does if I did. And when I do die, I already have so much to apologise for. You aren’t worth being one of those things.”

“So what now?”

“I’m going to drink. I’m going to drink a lot. And you’re going to stay where you are until your cavalry comes.” Drake stood up. “You know he died tagging me? Stupidity like that almost merits respect. To be willing to die like that. Makes me think he loves you a little bit more than he realises.”

“Are… Are you saying something nice to me? I actually can’t tell because you’ve literally been wailing on me non-stop for the last… I don’t even remember.”

“Also, I heard that Michael is coming to town. I was going to leave his head at your doorstep, but I was scared that you wouldn’t care. Do you want a card instead? Sorry I went overboard with the torture thing, I just misdirected 18 years worth of insatiable anger at you.”

“I fucking knew you were being way too nice.”
