Chapter 38: I don’t like her.

Owen reached Daveigh’s front porch, and there he was. Michael. He looked like he was deciding on what to say. He didn’t even notice Owen come up from behind.

“Ahem.” Owen announced his presence.

“Oh. You.” He scowled.

“Me. Daveigh’s boyfriend. Who does not really like you.”

“I sincerely don’t care.”

“You should. I just came back from your other ex’s house. Have you ever checked up on Alyssa in the last thirty years?”

“If you’re cheating on Daveigh I swear to God…”

“Calm down, Romeo. I’m actually busy cleaning up your fuck up. She nearly died because of you.”

“It’s not my fault that her brother is deranged.”

“And there we have it, ladies and gentlemen, the biggest pile of crap I’ve ever heard all day. So you didn’t kill his wife and his infant daughter?”

“That is none of your business, Owen.”

“I’m not hearing a ‘no’.” Owen scowled and showed his disgust. “I don’t like you. At all. And if Daveigh thinks there’s something more to you, that’s fine, it’s her call. But right now is the worst time for you to be an utter asshole. Come back tomorrow.”

“Who are you to tell me what to do?”

“Her boyfriend. I outrank you. Leave, now.”

“Or you’ll make me?” He glared.

Owen disappeared and Michael rolled his eyes. He looked just in time to see the rock collide with his face. Owen grabbed his legs and tossed him. Michael tasted blood and then Owen was on the other side, and a tree trunk collided with his face, sending him into the dirt. Owen kicked him and he rolled onto his tummy. Owen put his foot down on Michael’s back.

“Thank you for coming to visit. I’ll be sure to let Daveigh know you were here. Don’t worry, I understand, sometimes things just come up. It’s perfectly fine if you come back tomorrow. You have a good day too.” Owen said, with a hard glare in his eyes. Michael let out a sigh but did retaliate.

Owen stepped off of Michael and extended a hand. Michael swotted it away. He scowled at Owen, and walked off.

Owen walked to the door, and knocked. Daveigh answered.

“Hey.” She said.

“Hey.” He said.

“How are you holding up?” Owen asked.

“I’m okay. I heard Michael’s voice. Was he here?” She asked.

“Did you two fight?”

“Yeah. Sorry. He rubbed me up wrong, so I politely told him to leave.”

“I can literally see the blood from where you two just had a pissing contest.”

“Are you mad?”

“No, no. I didn’t really want to see him. And he sort of needed the shit kicked out of him. He’s got good intentions. I think.”

“Dunno if I agree with that.”

“Yeah, I know. Did you come from Alyssa’s?”

“She didn’t like… I dunno. I’m not thinking straight. She just got back.”

“She kissed me.”

“Did you kiss back?”

“No, it was like just a peck on the lips. But she told me she loved me.”

“I really want to kick her teeth in. Is it wrong that I want to kick her teeth in? Because I really want to kick her teeth in.”

“Do me a favour and don’t… I’ll let it slide because she’s my friend and she did just get back. It won’t happen again, I promise.”

“I trust you. But I don’t know if I trust her.”

“No. Dammit, Owen, she kissed you. She’s being a home wrecker.”

“It won’t happen again, I won’t let it.”

“So you let it happen this time?”

“You know what? I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let her kiss me, but she caught me off guard. And I love you. She just kissed me. And I promise it won’t happen again. I keep my promises.”

“I can’t fucking believe you two kissed.”

“What am I supposed to say? It’s okay? Because it’s not.”

“It is. You’re making this into a bigger deal than it actually is.”

“I’m sorry? What?”

“I don’t think you get to take out all the stuff between you and Julie on me. But I mean, when your ex is stalking your house and I’m coming at the drop of a dime when you need me, I don’t think you get to antagonise me. Also, when were you going to tell me you dated the guy who murdered someone’s wife and child?”

“I dunno. Maybe today I’d have explained it all. But now, I don’t feel like telling you jack. You know, you two deserve each other. A heroic martyr and his whore.”

“Jesus fuck! What is wrong with you?”

“I don’t know Owen, but I am sure you’re dying to tell me! Tell me what an incredible fuck up I am! And I mean, you don’t come here and tell me something comforting like ‘Hey, I’m really sorry that everything you know is a fucking lie’, no, now is the time for you to unburden yourself, so that you don’t have to feel guilty. Just fuck off, Owen.”

“Fine what?”

“I’ll leave.”

“No…” Daveigh let out a deep sigh. “I’m fucked up. Just… Stay. Please? Julie and I fought now and she stormed out. I didn’t call you to make you my punching bag. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

“No, it’s not. If you say it won’t happen again, then I trust you. I can’t promise I won’t be a bitch about it, and I do trust you. But I’m not going to be friends with her, I’ll tell you that straight and I don’t like her. She got you killed. And really, she probably got Evangeline killed as well.”

“Owen, face it. She’s trouble. And her redeeming qualities start and end with her tits. So just understand, I don’t like her, I don’t want her kissing you, and I’m not going to force you to choose your friends, but I mean… Is she really your friend? Just think about that. I know you have some weird attachment to her, but here’s my ultimatum… If she crosses the line with you again, it is over between us.”

“Come here.” She sighed and wrapped her arms around Owen. “I’m sorry if I’m being a bitch right now.”

“You aren’t. I guess you’re right.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Am I being unfair?”

“A little.”

“Well this is something I have to be unfair about.”

“The last girl who offered me an ultimatum died that same night.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You couldn’t have.”

“This is the girl who got run over, right?”

“Please don’t refer to her as the girl who got run over.”

“Sorry. You never talk about her with me.”

“There just never seems to be a good time to bring it up.”

“I know… It hurts, doesn’t it?”

“That’s okay. It’s supposed to. I mean, it’d be weird if it didn’t hurt. But she’d be happy for you. You’re here. You survived… In a sense.”

“I died because I was impulsive. She’d have decked me.”

“She sounds like she had her head screwed on right.”

“She did. I’m sorry. I… I fucked up really badly there. I thought I was going to die when Drake rushed me yesterday.”

“We got out, didn’t we? Even if it was by the mercy of a psychopath.”

“I think Drake is just… Hurt. Like no one else is. I mean, Lisa was taken away so quickly, I still can’t stop hurting. His wife and kid was murdered. You should have heard him. I mean… He told me I was the closest thing to a friend he had.”

“Don’t get involved with them, Owen. This is between Michael and Drake.”

“Drake is going to die. I think he actually wants Michael to kill him.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?”

“No. Well… I dunno. I think he deserves a chance.”

“Because he never got one. I mean, he caused us a lot of pain… But I think he was just dealing out whatever he was being given. I think he can do good. I think there’s something in there that wants to be saved… And because he owes Alyssa so much.”

“So what?”

“I’ve gotta stop him.”

“Are you sure? This isn’t your problem, Owen.”

“It’s gotta end somehow. Maybe just this once we can get a best case scenario.”

“How are you even going to find him?”

“I tagged him. I’ll always be able to find him.”

“I can do this on my own. If you don’t want to get involved, you don’t have to.”

“I will actually kick your teeth in if you ever say that again. I’m not letting you out of my sight for a long time, ’kay? Come inside… I’ll make us tea and we can just lie down on my bed and listen to The Pixies.”

“Sounds great.”

“I’m sorry about earlier.”

“Don’t be. Maybe you’re right. Maybe I am weirdly attached to Alyssa.”

“Maybe. But just be more weirdly attached to me, okay?” She said, and kissed Owen.
