Chapter 40: I’ll Kill him.

Michael and Matthew stood in the graveyard. Matthew scowled at Michael.

“What were you trying to pull at Daveigh’s house?”

“I didn’t think she’d have moved on by now.”

“You are the ultimate asshole.”

“I know.”

“I saw you got your ass kicked.”

“He’s lucky I wasn’t in the mood for a fight.”

“You did deserve it, I think you know that.”

“Okay, I did. Drake must have told him about my cousin and her baby.”

“Does it still haunt you?”

“Every night.”

“Good.”

“Fuck you.”

“No, no. You deserve every bit of misery. Michael, she’s dead. Delilah is dead. You slit her throat and you know she did nothing to deserve it.”

“I was acting on orders.”

“Even worse. You slit her throat for duty. Why’d you leave Alyssa alive?”

“Same reason I left you.”

“You barely left me alive. You cut my fucking arms off.”

“You have new ones.”

“I also have the nagging spirit of the last minotaur residing in my body.”

“You get his powers. That’s cool. You can totally hulk out.”

“Yeah. But that’s not going to help us.”

“I’ll just cut St. Claire’s head off again.”

“Michael, you don’t have to do this. In fact, you shouldn’t, you’ve caused that family enough suffering.”

“Before it was business. Now it’s pleasure.”

“Are you serious?”

“I hated him. I hated that he dragged Delilah down with him, I hated that he had a child with her. And I couldn’t fucking stand Alyssa.”

“Careful.”

“What do you even see in her? Demon whore.”

“She saved your life.”

“She should have let him kill me.”

“I agree. But daddy approves of your vampire girl, doesn’t he?”

“Daveigh wasn’t always a vampire.”

“No, you just made her that way.”

“You are pushing my buttons.”

“Fuck your buttons. Don’t do this, Michael.”

“I’ll kill him.”

“You’d have done it already.”

“It’s not too late. I’ll put him out of his misery.”

“No remorse?”

“I honoured Delilah’s memory enough.”

“You’re so clouded by hatred, Michael. I understand. But you used to be one of my best friends man. Where’d that guy go?”

“I don’t recall ever sparking a friendship with you.”

“It used to be me, you and ’Lyssa. We had good times. Then you defaulted back to being a pretentious dick and you think everything and everyone is beneath you.”

“Daveigh isn’t.”

“No, she’s just in love with someone else now. That’s okay. It happens.”

“No, when angels fall in love, it’s forever.”

“Then you don’t understand what love is. Delilah did. She died for it.”

“You don’t die on the person you love.”

“She died so you wouldn’t have to. Love isn’t some Boolean number that’s either one or zero. Love is… Infinite. Love is about making difficult choices. Love is about sacrifice, but also receiving. You don’t understand love. You might feel it, but you don’t understand it.”

“What the hell would you know about love?”

“I’ve loved a girl for nearly twenty seven years. She never loved me back. For a long while, she loved someone who never loved her. Who despised her in fact. And I couldn’t do a thing. I had to accept that. I knew in my heart that I could make her happy, but I couldn’t change the way she felt about him.”

“Worked out pretty well, hey?”

“I didn’t know my best friend would turn out to be a murderer. Had I known that I’d have probably told her you had a small dick.” Matthew looked at him sternly. “We should leave, Michael. Leave this town, this place.”

“I’m not going to let you do this. I get that you’re angry and hurt… But I know some part of you cares.”

“I did, once upon a time. But everyone I cared about is either dead or should be.”
