Chapter 47: Bad Memories
Morgan plopped down on his bed. He looked at the picture of himself, Owen and Lisa. His worst memory came back to him.
It was the night of Lisa’s death. Just before Owen and Lisa fought, she and Morgan were upstairs, alone, and she was storming out of the room.
“Lisa.” Morgan caught up with her.
“No, no. We are not doing this.”
“Just listen to me.”
“I am dating your best friend!”
“I know, and I’m sorry! Okay, I fucked up! I’m not going to pretend that somewhere there isn’t still a part of me that isn’t bitter as hell that you’re happy with someone who isn’t me, and I know I shouldn’t have kissed you, and I know that Zoë and I are together, and I love her, she’s great, but I did, and I’m sorry.”
“You really shouldn’t have done it.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
“I’m going to walk out now.”
“All I wanted from you was to respect that one line, Morgan. I didn’t want you to cross it. But you did. You broke my trust.”
“What did you expect me to do? You knew how I felt about you, and then you kissed me before you were with Owen, and you left me to find the girl I love the second most while you got to be happy.”
“Everything you just said was wrong. Just leave me alone, Morgan. Forever.”
“Look me in the eye and tell me that you never felt anything for me.”
“Listen to me very closely. I really want you to hear me. You are never going to hear me say it. Never. I love Owen. I love Owen. So even if it were true, it wouldn’t matter. Because you are going to marry Zoë. You are going to have gorgeous hipster babies and I am going to marry Owen. I’m going to go study veterinary science and Owen will probably do law like his dad. Or maybe he’ll figure out what he wants to do with his life. But I’m going to be there to see it. And that’s all there is to it. You never kissed me, we never saw each other tonight, we didn’t even speak. And if you wanna stay in this friend group, that’s God’s honest truth.” She looked at Morgan, then cupped his cheek. She stared straight into his eyes.
“And I never had feelings for you.” Lisa said and started walking away. Morgan suddenly felt his chest turn to lead.
”Doesn’t change the way I feel about you.”
“Morgan, I swear to God.”
“What if it doesn’t work out that way?”
“Then it doesn’t. But it will.”
“Zoë and I won’t last the next three weeks. Knowing her, it’s been a miracle dating her this long. That’s okay though. But I mean. Puts a dent in your plans. If it doesn’t go the way you want it, there’s a version of this where I tell you I love you, and you do the same. And then you go and become a singer like you actually want to be. And we get married on the beach. And do those things you’ve told me you want to do and never told Owen. I believe in that, okay? Just remember that as you walk down those stairs. The future never works out the way we plan.”
She descended the stairs, and Morgan saw her go outside. He watched her from the window. He smiled sombrely. She looked up. Owen walked up to her. They started having a fight. Morgan gritted his teeth. She stepped back into the street. She was shouting. She was crying.
He saw the headlights and screamed. The car smashed into her and she rolled off the top.. He ran downstairs, and Owen was screaming. He opened the door, and sprinted. She was covered in blood. And as he got there, she whispered something. She didn’t know if he heard it… She simply turned her head towards Morgan and said;
