Chapter 8: A Promise
“So you’re a succubus, your brother is trying to kill you and you’ve got a price on your head. Morgan, you suck at making friends.”
“Would you shut up? Clearly I’ve never met her before.”
“You said you that you would help me.” Alyssa said. She snapped Morgan’s leg back in place, and he screamed.
“That was before you told us all that crap about being hunted.” Morgan stammered out of breath.
“All I need is a devil’s trap and the runes for an exorcism circle. And I’ll be gone, I swear.”
Owen looked at Morgan. Morgan stared away for a bit. “I did say I’d do it.”
There was an awkward pause. Alyssa stared at her shoes and Morgan guiltily avoided her face
“By the way, you suck at fighting.” Owen teased Alyssa.
“I ripped off his arm.”
“He had six. And a massive cock.”
“Please get over it.”
“I mean, if you took a leg or that giant pendulum between his legs I’d have understood. But you took an arm.”
“Please can we not talk about it?”
“I can’t help it. It was just like monstrously huge.”
“Owen, right? If you say one more word about that cock I’ll... I’ll... I don’t even know. It was really big…” She giggled.
“My leg is in unimaginable pain, thanks for asking.” Morgan groaned.
“If you hold still for another fifteen minutes you’ll be all better.” Alyssa turned from Owen, and walked over to Morgan. She splayed her palm and started her concentrated hard, and Owen could see a faint glow surround her. Owen watched as the boned and muscles aligned in Morgan’s leg. Morgan tried sitting still while Alyssa used her magick but it itched extremely as she worked.
“Are you okay?” Owen asked Alyssa.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” She lied, concentrating on Morgan’s leg.
“You sure? He-... It was a he, right? He snapped your arm and he said some creepy shit.”
“Quite the euphemism. But it’s normal for demons like him. Just how things are in Limbo. It’s a horrid wasteland. It’s primal and raw. You take what you want and what you can. Pure sadism and hedonism. That’s why there aren’t many succubi anymore. And those of us who are left have gone to The New World or remain on earth. Limbo is no place for the fragile.”
“You sound like you speak from experience.” Owen said uncomfortably.
“Worry about yourself tough guy. He’ll want revenge. A little human that made him lose his prey.”
“We’ll I guess I’ll just have to stick with you then.”
“That’s not a good idea. It’s better that you just forget you ever met me.” She said coldly.
“Like you’re so well off without us.” Owen pouted.
“Hey, fuck you. I’m doing fine on my own thanks.” She said.
“You have a generous definition of fine.”
“Owen. This is not your problem.” Morgan cautioned.
“To hell with that. I just got dragged into a grudge match between things I didn’t even know existed an hour ago. Not to mention that I did kind of save your life.”
“Is that so? Go fuck yourself, Owen.”
Alyssa turned away. Owen wanted to continue arguing, but Morgan silenced him with a glare.
“I’ll make your trap and exorcism. And then we kill that thing that came after us. But after that, I want you to leave town. He came after you. Not us. You’re putting us in danger. I’m also charging double my usual rate, because I like my legs and I think it’s fair compensation for occupational hazards. But when it’s done, I never want to see you in Thornville again.” Morgan said.
“Okay.” She didn’t turn back. Owen carefully watched the movement of her shoulders.
“Then it’s a deal. Take Owen home and ward his house. I’m tired as all hell. You know where I live so come back tomorrow morning and we can talk some more.”
“Thank you.” She said through gritted teeth
She walked out of the room, and Owen stood with Morgan. Morgan plopped down on his bed and let out a heavy sigh. Owen went after Alyssa soon after.
Alyssa had her car parked outside. She put the key into the slot and fumbled with it. Owen noticed how badly she was shaking. He put a hand on her shoulder and she pulled away, glaring back.
“Sorry. No touching. Got it. Alyssa, right? I’m terrible with names... You’re really shaken up.”
“Of course I’m fucking shaken up, I’m scared, and jumpy, and paranoid and everything and everyone wants me dead and I can’t even sleep properly! It’s a fucking nightmare! And then there’s my brother... I barely got away last time he caught up to me. It’s happened so many times where someone has just made me feel so fucking worthless, so powerless and people like you are the worst, you pretend to care, because you fucking don’t! I don’t need your fucking sympathy! I don’t want you to try save me! You don’t understand a fucking thing! You don’t care and all caring is going to do is get you killed so if you don’t mind can we just go…?”
“Yeah. I’m sorry. I can’t imagine how bad it’s been for you. But I really don’t think you should go through all this alone. I’m sorry about what I said earlier. I know that I can’t do much, but… I know what it’s like to be unable to sleep. I know what it’s like when people pretend to care when they really don’t. It was like that for weeks when my dad died… And then it happened again when my girlfriend died. I die twice in the morning before I get out of bed… I get it. And I hated going through so much of it on my own. You don’t have to do that.” Owen got into the car. He strapped himself, in. Alyssa put the key in.
“You’re going to get yourself killed.” She said.
“I knew a guy a while back like you. He got real hurt getting involved with a fight that wasn’t any of his business.”
“I’m not him.”
“And I never liked fighting all that much anyway. I just want you to know that if you wanna talk or if you just need someone… I mean, I’m usually doing nothing important.”
“Why are you being so nice to me?”
“Odd question. I guess because I’ve had bad days and when I have bad days I’d want someone to be there for me. And it kind of sounds like you don’t have a lot of someones.”
She spoke softly. “I want to die sometimes. Just want to end everything. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I didn’t think I was followed, I fucked up so badly and you could have been killed and you’re being so nice to me and I can’t take it. I can’t take it...”
“I’m not dead, you aren’t and we got away, we survived. I won’t back down if I can change something. Alyssa… I can’t make anything okay. But I’m not them. I’m your friend, okay? I just decided that. Whatever you are, or whoever you are doesn’t matter to me. You’ll be okay. Even if you don’t believe it, I do. So believe me when I say it, you’ll be okay. I promise… I won’t let them get to you.” Alyssa caught his hand and gently squeezed it.
“Thank you. But you don’t need this life. Morgan’s right, I have to leave…”
“You’re serious about that then. You don’t have to. I mean, Morgan is just a bit sour from getting his leg broken, I’m sure I can-” Alyssa interrupted him.
“No, I’m trouble, Owen. People die around me. If they’re lucky.”
“Then I guess I’ll just have to be extra lucky.”
“Don’t be stupid… You don’t want me in your life.”
“What if I do?”
“I ruin people.”
“I really don’t know if you can ruin me a whole lot more than my next calculus test will.”
“You’re not going to back down from this, are you?”
“I’m probably going to have to leave as soon as the next person I pissed off comes to murder me.”
“Well… I can throw a rock at them. I was very good at throwing that rock.”
“Your pitching technique could use some work.” She teased.
“You were not impressed? I’ll have to throw a bigger rock.”
“Just don’t be too sad if the past catches up to me.”
“I’m a dweller, so I’ll get back to you on that, but I can say one thing… Everything will be okay. I’ll make sure of it... I promise.” Owen said.
“Okay.” She smiled, and put the car into ignition.
