Today was my special day and I wanted to celebrate with my family and my best friend properly. So special, that even my father Niklas showed up, although he was usually conspicuous only by his absence. After a lot of effort, I was presented with my master’s diploma this afternoon in a solemn ceremony at Atonia’s City Hall. Thus, at the age of 27, my academic education was finally complete.
Now, I was sitting at my table in the VIP section of the infamous Club Collosseum, reserved for my special occation, smiling bravely while my brother and stepbrother and my best friend Amie were having a blast. I didn’t want to spoil their good mood, and I didn’t want to admit to myself that I was still hung up on my stepbrother Adrian after so much time has passed.
At the same time, we hadn’t had any contact at all for a little over two years, because I had run away and thus ended our relationship. Adrian had really tried hard to explain the situation, but I hadn’t even bothered to listen to him. How could he put his foster father and his position above our love and justify his decision with logic. All that heartache had taught me an important lesson: never fall in love with your stepbrother.
As I sipped my gin and tonic, while being a little tense, my eyes kept wandering towards the Collosseum’s dance floor. Amie, my best friend and roommate, was currently being whirled around the dance floor by my brother, Darius, while Soraya was pressing herself in a sexy pose against Adrian - my Adrian.
It bordered on a miracle that the ever-controlled and cool, almost aloof Adrian, of all people, ventured onto the dance floor and here I was sitting at the table with a sour face. Normally the roles were reversed.
After all this time, I still thought of him as my Adrian, even though we had been in radio silence for over two years. That really had to be the end of it. Clearly he had finished with our relationship and moved on with his life. Soraya, his new human friend, was the best proof of that. But when I think about it, even this relationship with a human was a rather unusual behavior for Adrian. In any case, this connection would incur the wrath of Niklas, his foster father. For me, he had not taken on the famous Romirnov groll of our clan at the time - cheers.
I finished the rest of the gin and tonic in one gulp and then spluttered out, breathing heavily. It was time for a refill and to be quite honest, the time was long overdue to finally close the chapter of Adrian in my life.
Perhaps the sexy stranger I later related to in the separee, which was completely uncharacteristic behavior for me, suited me for that reason as well. Or maybe fate was also trying to play a trick on me.
Whatever the case, let me tell my story from the beginning....
