Chapter 2

So, it wasn’t the sun that caused my headache earlier today? What Maximus is telling me doesn’t make any sense, it’s not possible. I saw the theft before it happened? Could I have stopped it? My destiny?

“Wisp, you are the next generation of guardians. A guardian is a being that has the ability to see the upcoming horrible future. This can be a blessing and a curse. I knew this was going to happen since I saw you as a baby. Your silver hair is a sign. Your mother and I were always best friends and when I told her,” he sighs and put his head down.

“Well she didn’t want to believe it. She refused to believe what I knew from your birth. That’s why you don’t know anything about this.”

“Of course, she wouldn’t want to believe you! I don’t believe you! This is insane!” I jump up off the couch and interrupt him.

“But it is true. I watched your grandmother have these visions and now you.”

“No! This is impossible! Magic doesn’t exist!”

“It’s not magic, it’s- “

“I don’t care what it is, it doesn’t exist. I cannot see the future.”

“Then how do you explain what you experienced earlier today and why those reporters and cops are outside now?” I don’t answer, I can’t answer, I can’t explain it. It doesn’t make sense.

“Exactly. Sit back down and let me finish.” Maximus responds. I sit back down. None of this makes sense, none of it. Maximus takes a deep breath before beginning.

“Guardians are not magic; their ability has to be accepted or the ability will torture the guardian. No matter what they will see the future, it cannot be helped. Guardians are meant to see the bad and prevent it from happening, war, death, injury. When they see it, they have no connection to the event in their vision. Guardians can even see their own misfortune. This becomes the most torturous part. Guardians are not immortal, they will die, they can suffer. Because of this they always want to prevent the misfortune that is envisioned to happen to themselves. Are you following me?”

“No. This is too much.”

“I understand.” Maximus sighs deeply.

“Whisper this is serious and not to be taken lightly. You can save so many people and you can make a difference in the world.”

“Do you even hear yourself? Not one thing you are saying is possible! No one can see the future.” I stand up as I feel a tear come down my cheek

“Whisper it is possible, I watched your grandmother drive herself to death from a visionw where she saw- “

“No!” I interrupt Maximus.

“Just no! Why would I want to hear something about someone I never met! She was never a grandmother to me and hardly a mother to you and my mom.”

“Enough Whisper!” Maximus jumps out of his seat. I was taken aback by this statement.

“Sit down and listen to me!”

I sit down on the couch silently. He shocked me with this outburst. Maximus takes a deep breath and looks out the window.

“Never talk about your grandmother that way. She spent her life trying to save her children and grandchildren. Now you need to decide what you are going to do, accept your fate or avoid everything and perish in a miserable manner.” He storms out the room, I’m left alone in silence.

What is going on?
