The Wynchwood-Alverii Pack

The Wynchwood-Alverii Pack as the name suggests, is the product of two packs merging. Commanding the province of Kamyra in the country of Scylesia the pack was a formidable one.

Primarily founded by werewolves, the original packs in terms of species that inhabited the area, were very diverse. The Wynchwoods were a hardy, earth warrior pack hardened by the mountainous and lush green forests that covered their lands. Traditionally, they were a hunter community, living off the land and had also made a name for themselves from mining. They have a natural affinity to the earth.

Conversely, the Alverii were a water warrior clan that siphoned their powers from the valleys, rivers and the sea. The Alverii were traditionally farmers and fishermen, living off the land and trading these goods with materials from the Wynchwoods. Both prayed to different and similar gods and goddesses for bounty and strength and this spiritual connection the packs held made them particularly blessed. Alverii are drawn towards bodies of water; it is in their blood.

For centuries, the Moon Goddess thought it fit to pair members from both packs up and this resulted in a happy union of couples and the packs. Other deities would look down at the unions with deep admiration as they would see the very best values in their creations. Were and non-were folk lived together in harmony and learnt that together they could achieve so much. Pack members that were non-were adapted to pack life and understood the benefits of it. Witches, warlocks, fae, humans and others from abroad were safe from discrimination. Eventually, the packs agreed that as they were neighbours and found most of their mates in each other’s packs, since they shared values, resources, and so much more, that they should merge and become one, even stronger pack.

The resulting Wynchwood-Alverii Pack was well-known and over the years, the pack grew more and more prosperous. The main cities of Wynver and Alwood were founded years later which became the trading and business hubs for the commerce.

A great number of years have passed and since then communities have evolved, times have changed but not all things change. Wherever there are riches, there is poverty; wherever there is good, there is bad; wherever there is calm, there also approaches a storm.......

“Kiona! I swear to the Moon Goddess if you don’t come back right now I will have no choice but to report this to the Alpha and Luna!” came a reprimand.

Nonna Maisie was at the end of her tether, she had tended to many children over the years in the Alpha’s family, even the Alpha himself, in fact, but none had been quite so unruly as the youngest member of the family Kiona.

Kiona was the Alpha’s daughter. At 5 years old, standing at just over four feet tall, she was very tall for her age. Her tanned skin, silver hair and amethyst coloured eyes gave her the perfect mischievous look. Kiona had a penchant for finding trouble, even when she didn’t want to and it seemed like today was going to be no different. Her tangled hair was littered with leaves and twigs, her face rosy red with colour and caked with mud like the rest of her school uniform which hung off her slender frame. One could barely make out the blue and white stripes on her dress as it all seemed to fade into brown and green. She looked like she had been dragged through a hedge backwards and then thrown into a sty. Oh and the smell...!

As Nonna’s face screwed up in disgust, it was clear her eyes and nostrils were offended by the sight that was standing and smelling before her. Kiona obediently stood before her Nonna as she didn’t want her mother and father to see her like this and she didn’t want to get into trouble for the second time today. The Alpha blood in her was screaming for rebellion but the inner child in her realised she needed to reign it in before she gets punished.

“Sorry Nonna,” she mumbled looking down at her feet.

“You are going to be the death of me, Kio! How did this happen? I sent you out for lessons this morning!” Nonna Maisie asked, confused.

“I did go for lessons Nonna, but today we had a class trip to the farm. It’s Brad and Luca’s fault. They were teasing me and I-”

“I don’t want to hear it Kio! Or smell it for that matter! You should know better by now,” sighed Maisie. “Come on, my dear, let’s get you cleaned up, we have some very important visitors today and we cannot let your mother see you like this.”

Maisie knew children will always be just that - children! It was fine to have fun and play, however when you are the child of an Alpha there were certain behaviours that were not acceptable. Maisie was short in stature, barely a few inches taller than Kiona, but what she lacked in height she made up for with her commanding presence. She was a shapely woman, as buxom as they come, she always wore a knee-length skirt, a blouse and a matching cardigan; her hair usually tied up in a bun. She looked very young for eighty, but being a werewolf that was perfectly natural. They generally stop ageing after their mid twenties to thirties.

As Maisie and Kiona walked into the large mansion that was the main pack house, they walked over to the Alpha wing, where the family lived. The remaining wings of the house were divided into the main living areas, the library, the in-house cinema and living quarters for the guests, omegas, warriors and unmated wolves. The mansion was massive, but then so was the pack. It was an ancient pack that had survived centuries of history, and the size of the pack and prosperity grew over time.

Maisie took Kiona upstairs, bathed her and left her to play in the bubble bath, whilst Maisie went to sort out her clothes for the evening. Kiona loved bath time; one would almost think that she deliberately played around in the mud so she could splash about in the bubbles. She had a particularly strong connection to the elements only she didn’t quite know it yet. As Kiona played with the bubbles she didn’t realise someone else had entered the bathroom. Kiona’s countenance had a look of utmost concentration as she was completing the most important mission of her life - blowing the largest bubble in the world and she was just about to release it when she heard a laugh, breaking her concentration and causing it to burst.

“Impressive, my darling!”

“Mama, did you see?” Kiona asked proudly.

“Yes, my little one, I did. It was the biggest bubble I have ever seen!” Luna Freya replied, smiling warmly.

As Maisie returned to the bathroom, she gave a little bow.

“Luna Freya, would you like check the attire I have selected for this evening?”

“No need, Maisie, I am sure you have picked the best. However, I would like to spend a little time with Kio and dress her up. Would you mind seeing to the rest of the arrangements downstairs?”

“Certainly, Luna.”

As Maisie left to continue her duties, Freya and Kiona freshened up and got ready together for the evening function. The Luna wore a floor length, off-the-shoulder, shimmering red gown and her daughter wore a matching knee-length dress.

“Mama, what is today’s function for? Why do I have to wear this dress?” Kiona asked as her mother braided her hair.

“Your father, being the Alpha, hosts other Alpha’s from other packs, Kio. It is important to build good relationships with other packs so we can be stronger, little one. It is good to have allies. We are dressing up because it is also a special occasion today. Your older sister Ariadne has found her mate, and we will be meeting the families and celebrating this too.” Freya explained.

“What about Benjy and Bryan?” Kiona asked about her annoying older brothers.

“They will find their mates in good time, either in the pack, or at the Mating Ball.”

“I don’t want a mate, I don’t want a smelly boy as a mate!” Kiona exclaimed folding her arms.

“Well, let’s see what the Moon Goddess has in store for you, little one,” her mother teased, kissing her head. “Let’s go, Princess, we shouldn’t be late. It isn’t polite to keep our guests waiting.”

The Luna stood up and patted her gown. Taking her daughter’s arm in hers, both ladies walked downstairs to the join the festivities that were about to begin. As they walked down the stairs to the vestibule where guests began to arrive, all eyes turned to them and gazed on in admiration. Freya was a kind and loving Luna; her deep care for her pack members was reflected in their admiration and love for her.

As they walked through the pack house, Freya greeted her guests and let Kiona go; she was getting rather bored. Soon Kiona spotted two very familiar faces and ran over to them, punching Brad and Luca on their arms.

“You both got me in so much trouble today!” Kiona shouted.

Brad and Luca smiled cheekily, and then they became angry.

“Kio, you also got us in trouble! I now have to get up in the morning every day at 5am and go for training with my dad!” Brad grumbled.

“Yeah, Kio! I came home so dirty my Nonna is making me clean the floors and my clothes each time I make a mess now! I am not allowed any sweets either,” Luca complained.

Bradley was the son of an Alverii Alpha belonging to the Navy, Luca was the son of Kiona’s father’s Beta. They went to the same school, and were around the same age.

Just then, Kiona’s older sister, Ariadne, sauntered over to them and asked Kiona to join her outside. Ariadne was the perfect vision of traditional grace and beauty. She had just turned 18 years old, had her mother’s deep blue coloured eyes and waist length blonde hair. Unlike her mother though, she was short, around 5′3″in height, and petite. She was the envy of other girls in the pack but her good-naturedness kept the situation civil; she-wolves can be quite fierce. When she discovered she was mated to an Alpha from a pack outside of Scylesia in the Mating Ball last year, she was very upset. She didn’t want to leave her home, but it seemed that centuries of tradition had forsaken her, and the Moon Goddess had other plans for her.

“I guess I got off easy after today’s shenanigans!” Kiona shouted at the two boys, sticking her tongue out, and then running off into the garden with her sister.

Kiona felt like an ugly duckling next to her sister - she could never possess her grace and poise - but she loved her, and looked up to her in awe.

“What are you thinking, little one?” Ariadne asked gently.

“You are so beautiful, Ari,” came the reply.

Ariadne smiled warmly at her baby sister; she was going to miss her terribly when the time came for her to move to her new pack. Perhaps Kio could come over to visit her during the holidays in Persemnon, she was sure Arron, her mate, wouldn’t mind. He was a progressive Alpha, although she wouldn’t be able to see her family often, he wouldn’t stop her from staying in touch or visiting. He was even letting her finish her studies before assuming Luna duties. Arron was an important werewolf, being the head of the province Persemnia, and a member of the Werewolf King’s royal council. Ariadne counted her blessings.

“Thank you Kio, however, I think you look even more beautiful than I do.”

Kiona blushed at her sister’s words and smiled, not knowing what to say. As they both approached their family in the large marquee set up in the garden, Kiona looked at her parents who held each other affectionately, she watched as Alpha Arron wrapped Ariadne in his arms and she saw her two annoying brothers fighting under the table.

Look at my crazy, but amazing family, she thought to herself.

The rest of the evening continued as smoothly as it had begun; there were announcements made introducing the Alphas who were visiting for pack business; Arron and Ariadne’s engagement was also announced, as well arrangements for the Mating Ball that was fast approaching. As the speeches came to an end, Alpha Felix and Luna Freya instructed the guests to “eat, drink, dance and be merry!” and they took to the dance floor looking as much in love as Arron and Ariadne did.

Kiona sat, perched, on one of the swings in the garden looking on at the proceedings. She was amazed she hadn’t gotten into trouble yet, although the night was still young. She felt a tap on the shoulder and turned to see a pair of familiar blue eyes.

“What do you want, Benjy?” Kiona scowled.

“I came to ask you to dance,” Benjy answered.

Kiona knew he was up to something, something that was no good.

“Thank you, but no thank you, Benjy,” Kiona replied, sticking her tongue out.

“See! I told you she’s a silly girl and wouldn’t dance!” Benjy shouted at Bryan. “I won the bet!”

Bryan scowled at Benjy, handing him a pouch.

“Why were you betting on such a silly thing? YOU’RE silly!” shouted Kiona.

“Who is silly? Me? Or the silly girl in a silly dress!”

“This silly girl won you your silly bet! Half of your winnings should be mine!”

Benjy pushed Kiona off the swing and ran, but Kiona gave chase. They ran across the dance floor, under the tables where dinner was served, and under some of the tables where guests were sitting. As they approached the pack house, they were dodging groups of guests and Kiona was gaining on Benjy. Benjy swerved to avoid the waiters and waitresses and suddenly stopped in front of a massive cake that was being wheeled out. Kiona began to pull at Benjy’s hand, trying to grab the pouch he was holding, but he wasn’t letting go.

“Let me see what it is!” shouted Kiona.

“Only if you admit you are a silly girl!” Benjy countered, smirking, pulling the pouch back.

“I’M! NOT! SILLYYYYYY!”

As they both struggled to keep hold of the pouch, a split second later, Kiona lost her grip and they both fell apart from each other backwards. Benjy landed in the cake and Kiona sharply hit the table behind her knocking over a pyramid of champagne flutes, spilling them over an unsuspecting Alpha. There was a resounding crash which was followed by an immediate, deadly silence. All eyes were on the champagne-soaked Alpha Morgan, the two naughty children responsible for the ruckus and Alpha Felix.

Benjy sat on the grass, completed covered in cake from head to toe. Unfortunately, as he landed in the cake, the force of his impact caused him to roll over the trolley, on which the cake sat, and the cake swiftly followed. Kiona, on the other hand, was relatively unscathed and has only a bruise and bump for her sins. Alpha Felix, Luna Freya and Luna Myrtle, Alpha Morgan’s mate, slowly made their way to the scene, surveying it carefully. There was still a deadly silence in the marquee.

The now champagne-flavoured Alpha Morgan looked quite ready to murder someone - he wasn’t known for his patience. However, as his Luna approached him, she whispered something naughty in his ear, to which he gave a low growl. They each grabbed a bottle of champagne and walked away slyly, secretly winking at Alpha Felix before they left.

Before they could do anything, Bryan ran into the scene and plopped himself next to Benjy. He rubbed a bit of cake off Benjy’s face and started eating.

“Mama, this cake is delicious!” he exclaimed, without a care in the world.

The Alpha and Luna looked at each in dismay and then burst out laughing and everyone joined them. The event photographers took a few photos of Benjy and Bryan and the party shortly resumed as though nothing untoward had happened.

“We will talk to the three of you later,” Freya gently scolded her children whilst mind-linking the kitchen to bring out more cake and champagne, and mind-linking Maisie to help clean Benjy up.

“I knew a night off was too good to be true! You are going to be the death of me!” exclaimed Maisie as she came from her table all dressed up. The old, but youthful-looking Nonna looked especially beautiful which was a change to the dresses the children usually saw her in and the three of them looked at her in awe. She was wearing a champagne coloured gown with gold and red tassels and border-work.

As she got Benjy up, the four of them giggled and went into the house; there had been enough excitement for one day.

Kiona, amidst all the excitement, didn’t even look inside the pouch. She quickly ran over to Benjy and handed it back to him.

“Sorry Benjy.”

“That’s ok Kio, I really liked the cake,” he chuckled.

The following morning the Alpha and Luna summoned their three children to breakfast in their private dining room. They knew they were in trouble now.

As they timidly entered the room seeing their parents having breakfast, they immediately walked up to them and obediently awaited their instructions.

“I’m sorry, Papa,” said Kiona, looking down at her shoes.

“I’m sorry too,” added Benjy, who was also studying the floor.

“I’m sorry too, Papa,” added Bryan, not wanting to be left out.

Alpha Felix stopped reading the paper and looked up at them sternly and then he sighed softening his expression slightly. He cleared his throat and spoke in his Alpha voice.

“Benjamin Olivier Wynchwood, I expected better behaviour from you. You are an Alpha’s son and you should realise your behaviour reflects on the pack. You are now 13 years old and you will be a man soon. You will be the next Alpha and the pack needs to know you are responsible. This is what you are training for, my son.”

“I promise I will do better next time, Papa,” Benjy replied, running into his open arms.

“I’m sure you will, because this autumn you and Bryan will be starting boarding school.”

There were gasps and protests at this sudden announcement, including from the Luna who didn’t know about this decision.

“Felix, why is the first I am hearing about this? Do I not get a say in this? Are they not my children too?” Freya asked, hurt.

The Alpha remained silent on this point and he turned his attention to Kiona, speaking more softly.

“Kiona, you little scamp, you are also becoming unruly and need some discipline. You will also be starting boarding school.”

Having made this announcement he abruptly got up and went to his office; the Luna scarpered after him demanding an explanation.

The three children were left in the dining room to digest the bomb that was dropped on them. The three of them exchanged uncomfortable looks.

“I AM NOT GOING TO BOARDING SCHOOL AND NEITHER ARE THE BOTH OF YOU!” screamed Kiona, pushing her plate away and running upstairs to her room.

Hot tears streaked down her red, angry cheeks as Kiona lay down on her bed and cried her little heart out. She knew she was naughty and troublesome sometimes, but she would change. Kiona would do everything she could to stay. She angrily decided to form a plan with her brothers and proclaimed, between sobs, that everything would be alright.

She soon became overwhelmed with emotion and tired herself out; she slowly drifted off into a deep sleep.
