Stubborn Mates

5. Aspen

I got off of the floor and decided to sit in the chair at the table in the middle of the room. I was fucking miserable. I just wish they would kill me and get it over with.“Our mate wouldn’t do that,Aspen.” Rebel popped up in my vision.“How do you know that Reb? We don’t know anything about him other then what we here. He’s the fucking Alpha for moon sake! We’re as sure as dead.” I linked back to her.

She let out a little huff and shook her head.“I know he wouldn’t do that. He’s our mate. We love and protect each other always.” she snorted. I let out a groan.“You being an hopeless romantic is going to get us killed one day. Maybe today” I linked her. She turned her head and turned to walk away. “Our mate isn’t going to hurt us. You’ll see.” she said before she disappeared back into my conscience.

I laid my head down on the table as I tried hard to remember how I got here. The same visions kept playing in my head. Bar,drink, car then nothing. I suddenly heard the door open and in walks the same guy I saw in the court room. I sat up and took in his appearance. “So instead of me calling you inmate, how about you tell me your name?” he said as sat down. I didn’t say anything to him.

Growing up in The Fet, it was a secrete rule that you don’t talk. Especially when being questioned. “Let me start. I’m Jace. I’m the Beta to Alpha Pierce. And you are?” he said again. I tilted my head to the side just staring at him.Rebel popped back up at the mention of our mate. “See I told you. He wants to help.” she said as she wagged her tail. “Then why isn’t he in here himself Reb?” I asked her. She decided to stay quiet. “Thought so.” I said and she snorted.

The Beta in front of me all of a sudden snapped his fingers as if he remembered something. He went in his pocket and pulled out a key. “Alpha told me to un-cuff you.” He said as he leaned over and unlocked the cuffs. I got a whiff of my mates scent on him and I had to fight to keep Rebel at bay. “He smells like our mate.” she spoke as I rubbed my wrist.

I tuned my head and looked at the dark glass. I knew he was on the other side of it. I could faintly smell him. I could tell he was looking straight at me. “So are you going to tell me your name?” Beta Jace asked. I turned my head and looked at him. I didn’t care much about talking to him. But for some reason, I wanted my mate to know my name. I turned back towards the glass and spoke. Unsure if he could hear me or not. “Aspen.”

I turned my head and looked down to the ground and watched as the red marks on my wrist started to heal. “Aspen. So can you tell me what happened?” he asked but I stayed quiet. I couldn’t tell him because I couldn’t remember. I heard him let out a breathe of frustration before he spoke. “Are you going to answer anything I ask?” he questioned. I looked up at him and a smirk crawled on my face.

It was actually kind of entertaining that I was getting under his skin. He eyes suddenly glazed over. Once they were clear he stood up and walked out without saying a word. “Now look at what you did Aspen. That was our mate’s help. He was trying to save us.” Reb yelled at me. “If our mate was trying to help us he would be in here himself.” I replied back to her. " I don’t understand why you have to be so damn stubborn. He’s...” she started but she paused and sniffed in the air. “He’s on the other side of the door.”

As I looked up, he was walking in through the door. Our eyes locked on each other. His stature oozed authority and it made me shiver. Both of our nostrils flared as we took in each others scent. “Aspen.” He spoke and I shivered as he called my name. I straighten my back as I had to call down to keep Rebel back.

The whole mate thing was making me soft and I hated it. I wanted to melt into his solid chest and arms. He pulled the chair out right in front of me and sat down. He cleared his throat and seemed to be at war with himself just like I was. “I’m Alpha Ryker Pierce. I looked into your file and all your reports came back to show that you didn’t commit this crime. But we both know you know who did.” He spoke I only heard half of what he said.

I couldn’t stop staring at him. After only seeing him twice I was able to memorize every single part of his face. Now that he was up close, I could make out the tribal markings on his neck. They were symbols of The Eclipse Pack. I’m assuming was his original pack before the war. They were my original pack,The Northern Pack, sister tribe.

He snapped his fingers in front of me to bring me back to reality. “What?” I spoke to him. He looked frustrated. I guess being the Alpha, he’s not use to repeating himself. He opened of the folder he had with him and laid a sheet of paper in front of me.

It was had graphs and numbers on them and I became confused. I looked up at him and he picked up on my confusion. “This is your toxicology report. It proved that whatever drink you drunk was spiked with a memory potion. This specific potion erases the last twelve hours of your memory when it kicks in.” He said and I looked over the papers again.

I loud growl escaped my lips as I punched the table. The anger boiled over in me as I stood up. “Those sons of bitches! I will kill them!” I yelled as I punched the wall. The fact the Eli would do this to me doesn’t surprise me. But Eric, I knew I didn’t think of him as much of a friend. But I never pictured him spiking my drink, let along with pinning a murder on me.

I punched the wall again. “Fuckers!” I yelled as I heaved hard trying to calm my temper. I began pacing back and forth as I cursed both of them under my breath. I heard a throat clear as I turned to see the Alpha staring at me. He had a look of amusement on his face which ticked me off worse.

“Sit.” he ordered. I let out a low growl but did as I was told. I’m not use to no one ordering me around and if this is what having a mate is like then I want no parts of it. I noticed he had an eyebrow lifted as I sat down. I don’t care if he is the Alpha, I’m not too fond of taking orders.

I turned to look at him as he began to speak. “Who are they?” he asked. I looked at him with a raised eyebrow. He looked as if he was starting to lose patience with me. ” You said you will kill them. Meaning you know exactly who they are.” he said. I sat back and looked at him. I wasn’t sure on if I wanted to tell him. He would have them killed but I wanted to do it.

“Look. You have two options here. Option A, you can keep your mouth shut, I’ll sentence you to death and the you die.” He pause as if the idea of me dying hurts him. He took a deep breathe. “Option B, you give me names, your charge is reduced and your punishment is less harsh.” he finished.

“Will I be able to walk out of here?” I asked him. For a second it seemed like he stopped breathing. “No.” he said in flat tone. I scrunched my face up. “But I didn’t kill anyone.” I said in my defense.

“You may not have killed the guard. But they found three pairs of footprints in the forest behind his house. They found your prints inside his house. Which means you were with them. You may not have committed the crime but you are an accessory. Even if I willing to over look that, the council won’t and they will not let you go free.” he said in one breath.

He then leaned forward and lowered his voice. “Your best bet is with me. I might be willing to give you a light punishment because you are my mate. But the council won’t care who you are. They will kill you.” He said and the leaned back.

I looked at him as I thought about everything he said. I put my head down and started rubbing my hands through my hair. Something I did when I trying to think. It wasn’t a hard choice really. I had to go with his second option if I wanted to live. But I wanted my own revenge.

I don’t care if my mate was the Alpha, no one was going to stop me from getting it. I looked up at him. “If I tell you what will my punishment be?” I asked. He shrugged his shoulders. “That depends on how much you tell me.” he said as he leaned forward and place his hands on his lips.

I started in his eyes but had to look away before I got lost in them. “Tell him already. He’s our mate. We can trust him.” Rebel spoke up. “Shut up Reb.” I yelled and all she did was let out a huff. I thought for a second longer and the looked back up at him. “Fine. I’ll tell you.” I said and he waved his hand for me to start talking.

I ran down everything down to him. The trip to the human realm, Eric coming to my home, the incident at the bar and then going to Eli’s car. “I can’t remember anything past that. Next thing I know I’m waking up in a silver cell with a rude ass guard telling me I murdered someone.” I finished talking.

He leaned back in his chair and processed everything I told him. He was quiet for a while. He then suddenly stood up and walked out. I was so confused. How can you ask for my confession and then just get up and disappear? I sat there alone again for at least twenty minutes. Before he came walking back in. I couldn’t read the expression on his face so I didn’t know what to expect.

“So I went to tell the council everything you told me. They’ve agreed to drop your charge and punish you however I think fit.” He paused as he folded his arms and stared at me. “So what is it going to be?” I asked him growing tired of being in here. A smile came on his face and I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like this.

“Well it just so happened that my assistant retired early. So you will be my new assistant.” He spoke as he leaned on the chair. I let out a growl and shook my head. “No.” I said as I folded my arms. He suddenly snapped and tossed the chair to the side. He huffed loud and he slammed his hands on the table.

“The wasn’t a request. You will work for me for as long as I say so.” he said through clenched teeth. I don’t know why but it amused me a lot to see him flip out like this. My lips spread into a small smile. I reached my hand out and touched to side of his face. He calmed down instantly at my touch.

We locked eyes with each other and as soon as I got lost in them, he slapped my hand away. “Don’t touch me.” he said in a harsh voice. My feelings became hurt as I felt rejected. This is why I didn’t want a mate. They make you too sensitive. “Well I won’t work for you.” I said as anger started to fester in me.

“You have no choice. You will work for me. You will do what ever I please, when ever I please. Is that understood?” He asked but I stayed quiet. “I said is that understood pack member?” he asked with more authority. I narrowed my eyes at him as my leg began to shake from anger. “I’m not your pack member.” I said through clenched teeth.

He leaned in so close that I felt his breath on skin. “That can be easily changed.” He said with a smirk on his face. I wanted to slap it off. He then pushed away from me and walked out the room.

A few moments later, the Beta came in and told me he was in charge of showing me around. He told me to get up and follow him. I don’t know how this was going to go. But two things are for sure. I will get my revenge on Eli and Eric and I refuse to be claimed by my asshole of a mate.
