Stubborn Mates

9. Aspen

I walked out Ryker’s office still wearing a smirk on my face. He was jealous I was talking with Nile. It made me feel warm inside to know apart of him cared a little. “See. I told you our mate cares for us. Why would he get upset about a small thing like that?” Rebel wagged her tail. “Maybe your right Reb. Maybe we can accept each other soon.” I linked to her as I walked back into the house.

I looked down at the wanted papers for Eli and Eric. I had mixed feelings about it. I was happy the charge was dropped from my name. I was anxious to spill their blood for their betrayal. And I felt a tad bit touched that Ryker did this for me.

All the stories I heard about him, he was never the type to care enough to investigate. Maybe things can turn around for us. I turned the corner and immediately ran into Gamma Nile. “Oops. Sorry Gamma Nile.” I said as I stepped back.

“It’s okay Aspen. And I told you that you don’t have to be formal with me.” He said as he put a small smile on his face. I gave one back as I played with the papers. Nile was a handsome guy.

He has smooth milk chocolate skin, long ,neat dreadlocks and beautiful auburn eyes. He stood about an even six feet and had a nice solid build. If Ryker wasn’t my mate, I sure wouldn’t have minded getting to know him. “What do you have there?” He asked, pointing at the papers.

“Oh. Alpha wanted me to give Beta Jace these wanted papers. “ I said and he frowned. “Why would you give it to Jace? That's something I’m supposed to do?” He said as he reached for the papers. A small smirk came to my face. He didn’t want to send me to you. That's why.

Nile looked at the papers and had a perplexed look on his face. He looked back up to me and pointed to the papers. “These are the two who pinned the murder on you?” He asked and I nodded my head. He folded the papers and put it in his pocket. “I’ll be sure to make it my top priority.” He said as he placed his hand on my shoulder and smiled at me.

Out of no where,Beta Jace popped up behind Nile. “Hey Nile. It’s time for you to transport prisoners. “ he said. Nile gave a side eye glance to Jace but turned back to me. He took his hand off my shoulder and bowed. “See ya later Aspen.” He said.

I said a soft goodbye and he left. I turned to Jace who had a blank look on his face. I cleared my throat and looked down at my feet. “Look I know I’ve been an asshole to you since I’ve met you. I just want to say sorry. Things have been complicated.” I said as I looked up at him. His blank expression changed into a big goofy smile. “I get it.” he said with a wink.

I didn’t know what that meant but I just gave him a small smile. “Do you know where I can find Emily? Alpha gave me the day off and he said I can explore the city as long as she’s with me.” I said to Jace. “Sure. I’ll show you.” He turned around and lead me up to the second floor.

He walked to a door down the hall and opened it. “Hey babe. Alpha gave Aspen the day off. She said you have to go with her if she wants to leave the house.” He said as he walked in the room. I stayed at the door and took in the area. It was an art room. With painted canvases, blank canvases and paint everywhere. It was one painting that caught my attention.

I walked into the room and touched the painting. It was a picture of all the Alphas sitting at a table before the war.I touched the drawing of my father. I remember this picture. My dad had a copy of the actual photo in his Alpha’s office. He said it was the quarterly Alpha’s meeting and they had went to get some beers after.

It looked so realistic. Like an exact copy of the real thing. I had started to forget what my parents look like. Seeing my father’s face after so long brought tears on the cusp of my eyes. But I sucked them back in. “Its beautiful isn’t it.” Emily said as she walked up next to me.

I nodded my head as I took a step back.“Did you paint this?” I asked her. “Yeah. I painted it for Alpha as a birthday present. In hind sight I don’t think it was good idea. It was just after his mom passed. He wasn’t too happy about it.” She said as she tossed a piece of hair out her face.

“That's Alpha Ryker’s father.” She said as she pointed to the man sitting next to my father. Ryker looked exactly like him. Same deep blue eyes. Same dark and menacing look but yet very handsome. “Wow. They’re twins.” I said out loud. “Yeah. I always said that. Well give me fifteen minutes to get cleaned up and then we can have a girl day.” Emily said.

I turned my head towards her and gave a small smile. “Do you have some clothes I can borrow? All I have is work clothes.” I said to her. “Yeah honey. Come on.” she said and I followed her to her closet. She gave me a pair of leggings and a pain white shirt. I went up too my room and changed. I paired my leather jacket with the outfit and some black leather boots. Her clothes fit a little tight on me but they would do for today.

Twenty minutes later, Emily was driving us to the mall. I learned a few things about her. She’s originally from The Shadows Pack. Her wolf name is Jasmine and her and Jace found each other at a festival celebrating Alpha’s passing birthday. She is like an open book. I kind of admire her for that. I use to be like that. Always warm and welcoming to new friends. But you can’t be that way growing up in The Fret. I learned that the hard way long ago.

After a whole day of shopping and sight seeing, we were finally heading back. I really enjoyed my time with her. She made me feel like I didn’t have to walk on egg shells with her. And that’s something I haven’t felt in a long time. We walked up the steps on the mansion talking and laughing.

Emily opened the door and my heart stopped and broke at what was before me. Ryker was standing there kissing some girl. For a second all I saw was red. It took every fiber of my being from shifting and ripping her apart. Ryker looked like he was a deer caught in headlights.

The wolf he was kissing turned around. She was pretty, I’ll give her that. She had long blonde hair, clear tan skin that had an angelic glow, light blue eyes like the sky. “Emily.” her squeaky voice sounded. “It's Beta Emily to you Rose.” Emily said in an tone that said she didn’t like her too much.

She narrowed her eyes at Emily then turned her attention to me. “And who are you?” She said as turned from Ryker towards me with her finger pointed. All I could do was flare my nostrils at her. I was so furious, I couldn’t speak. If I could speak, shit would of gotten real.

“She’s my new assistant.” Ryker spoke up. “She needs to stop looking at me like that before things get ugly.” she said as she tried to step towards me. I let out a challenging growl. I wanted her to approach me. I dared her with my eyes.

Ryker pulled her back and stood between us. “She’s my assistant not yours. Just go upstairs Rose.” he ordered. She glared from me to him then tooted her nose up as she walked up the stairs. “Em can you drop my bags off in my room for me? I need some air.” I said and before Ryker or Emily could say anything I turned and ran out the back towards the woods.

I felt betrayed and foolish. How could I ever think he an I would ever become mates. “Aspen!” I heard Ryker’s voice. I stopped and turned to look at him.I mugged him as he stood there looking speechless. I turned around and ran into the thick trees. I ran until I felt like I was far enough to not be bothered.

I took off my clothes and shifted into Rebel. She took off running as she shared my same disappointment. “Maybe it wasn’t what it looked like.” Rebel said. “It doesn’t matter Reb. It was stupid to think that Ryker and I could be mates. He’s the fucking Alpha and I’m just an orphaned nobody.” I said to her.

“We should talk to him.” she said. “No! I know what needs to be done. I’m just going to get through this year and be on my way.” I said. “No Aspen. We have to talk to him. He is our mate. He would never...” Reb spoke but I cut her off. “NO! It doesn’t matter Rebel! We aren’t meant to be. We will never be! He has who he wants in the mansion. When will you fucking understand that!” I snapped.

Rebel ran back towards the mansion whining. When she got to my clothes, she stopped running. My body started to shift back into my human form and then I felt Rebel disappear. I let out a frustrated sigh as I realized how bad I hurt her. “I’m sorry Reb. Come back.” I said as I put my clothes back on but I still got no feeling of her.

We’ve gotten into it a few times before and she would disappear. I let out a frustrated grunt as I walked back towards the house. I ran up to my room and slammed the door. I took off my clothes and took a scolding hot shower. I wanted to feel anything other then the hurt and disappointment I felt inside me. I got out the shower and put on a pair of pajamas I got today at the mall. I laid in bed and stared up at the ceiling as thoughts went through my head.

Fuck this mate thing. I can’t stand feeling vulnerable and weak. Why the fuck does having a mate make you sensitive? I’m sure he’s slept with other people before. I’ve slept with other people before. I normally wouldn’t have given a fuck. But now that I know I have a mate, everything I think is about him.

And to walk in and see some snooty bitch kissing him drove me crazy. He’s mine. He’s only going to be mine. What the hell am I saying? There’s no way we can be together. He was holding her as he kissed her. He told her to go upstairs to his room not leave. He told them I was just his assistant. He doesn’t want me as a mate. Why won’t he just reject me so we can get over this? I’m so sick of this shit. Maybe I should just reject him. I started feeling sad at the thought of that.

A small knock came from the door. I got up and walked over and opened it to see Ryker standing there. He looked like he was lost for words. He rubbed the back of his neck and refused to make eye contact with me. “I just wanted to tell you that what you saw wasn’t what it was. She kissed me and I wasn’t expecting it. But I made her leave.” Ryker started.

“Whatever or whoever you chose to bring into your home has nothing to do with me. I’m your assistant and nothing more.” I said and his eyes shot up to mine. He started to speak but just closed his mouth. He clenched his jaw and a few veins popped out from him grinding his teeth.

“Is there anything else, Alpha?” I asked. He stared at me a little while longer and stood still. “No.” he finally answered and turned to walk away. I sucked my teeth and closed my door.

I knew having a mate would be nothing but trouble. I curse Selene for mating me with him. I wish I didn’t have a mate.
