Chapter Ten

After my conversation with Alvaro, we decided to re-enter the palace because it was already late at night. He offered to take me to my room so we could talk more while walking. I let him know a few things about me and just what he should know. I was even forced to make up a story just to make my role as a princess look realistic.

I'll admit that I was nervous when he said earlier that he wanted to get to know me better. The effect on me was different. As if he was indicating that he wanted to get to know me better so that he would know my true identity, my true self. At this moment, I’m already thinking of the possible things that will happen when he or they realized that I am just pretending.

I went back to my senses when Alvaro suddenly stopped walking and then he faced me. I didn’t notice that we were already in front of the room. That was fast.

“Thank you for your time,” he said. “I enjoyed our conversation.”

I smiled, “Me too.”

He gave me a short nod. “Go into your room and rest.”

I also nodded and then turned my back on him. But before I could finally open the door, I looked at him again. He did not even move from where he was standing. He folded his arms and looked at me seriously. He was still waiting for me to get inside before he left.

“May you sound asleep…” he added.

I breathed out in annoyance. I have been rolling around in bed since earlier. It’s midnight but my mind is still wide awake. I’m the only one awake here. I tried to force myself to sleep but I really can’t. Well, I think I’m homesick.

I thought of going out of the room to drink some water. It was also a right decision because I suddenly felt thirsty. I took each step slowly because I’m afraid of breaking their expensive things here. It was all pure gold. I’m scared they might cut my head if I destroyed one.

I went straight to the kitchen and got a glass of water. I wouldn’t have been there long when I saw the big painting hanging on the wall. I went near to it and stared.

The one in the painting is Alvaro’s family. The King, the Queen, Prince Alfaro and him. I’m not sure if they were equally happy there. I didn’t even see Alvaro smiling. Well, even the queen and his twin brother. Only the majesty smiled at me. This family is very serious.

I noticed another picture below the painting. It was a photo of Alvaro and Alfaro together taken a long time ago because they were just children here. I can’t point out where Alvaro is in this picture because his face has changed a lot. It’s too far from now. But they were both cute when they were young.

I was suddenly taken aback when I heard a deep voice coming from my back.

“That photo of my two children is my favorite.” the King majesty said.

I immediately bowed at him when I faced him.

“What is the reason and you’re still awake, Princess?” he asked me.

“I couldn’t sleep, your majesty.” I replied shyly.

“Maybe you’re innovating,”

I hesitated to nod. “I think so.”

“I noticed your disdain for me, Princess Emerald.”

That made me scratch my head. I don’t know what I should say. The King is right, I really felt uneasy. I never expected to be able to talk to the King of a Kingdom. But he is right in front of me now. I secretly pinched my arm. I bet I was just dreaming. But when I felt the pain, I lost hope. This is really a reality and not just a dream.

“Do you want me to tell you a story so you won’t feel uncomfortable around me?” the King offered, I just nodded.

He told me about his life as a King. Of course, it is difficult. Very difficult. He leads a lot. He has many problems ahead. He also fought many battles and won to protect his Kingdom. He next shared about his family, his children. About the youth of the two. I laughed when I found out the antics Alvaro used to do back then. I also told him just a few of my childhood stories. Even my foolishness before.

The two of us filled the kitchen with laughter. I watched the King laugh. I realized that he was not only a good leader but also a good father and husband. He loved his family dearly. Especially his children. The longer we talked, the more I felt comfortable with him.

“I am glad of you, Princess.” he said with a smile, “You’re also silly.”

I giggled again. I suddenly remembered my Dad. I can no longer recall when our last bonding or conversation like this. It has been a long time since we last laughed and jested each other. I don’t know when that will ever happen again. I miss them.

“The truth is that I wanted to have a daughter for so long but I wasn’t given the chance.” he added.

“It’s not too late, your majesty. You can still have offspring.”

“But with all the things I have to take care of every day, I don’t have that in mind.”

I could barely feel the sadness in the tone of his voice. He is having a hard time being the King. Anyway, who wouldn’t be? Almost every day he met different people. If they have a problem, he has to fix it because he is the leader.

“If I were lucky, I would have had a princess as beautiful and as kind as you.”

I smiled. “I wish your hopes will be fulfilled.”

“Even though I don’t know you very well, I really feel comfortable with you. I always feel like I have a daughter because you are here.” he smiled widely, “Can you grant my request if I ask you to stay here in our Kingdom for a few more days?”

I was stunned by what he said. The King asked me to stay with them for a long time. Then that means I have to pretend to be a Princess longer. But I wasn’t able to turn down the King’s request. And another thing is I enjoy here in the palace. If I also leave I don’t know where I am going. I still don’t know every place in this Kingdom, what more about the Kingdom of Borza right? I will only get lost there. It’s not like I already have an acquaintance.

“I have no right to deny your request, your majesty.” I agreed.

“I’ll just send a message of permission to your parents---”

“No need!” I quickly stopped him, he frowned.

“They’re definitely looking for and worrying about you.”

“Uh, I don’t want to bother you, your majesty. I’ll just talk to them so I can also say goodbye.”

He nodded. “Then go ahead. Tomorrow I will order my children to accompany you to your Kingdom.”

I smiled raw and just nodded at him. But the truth is my heart was in trouble.

What should I do now?

When I woke up the next day I immediately got up and washed my face. I stared at myself in the mirror for a minute. The black under my eyes! I don’t even know what time I finished talking to the King and if I slept for more than five hours. Argh!

I just fixed my appearance and my hair before I left the room. I caught them having breakfast at the table. They are complete. I suddenly felt embarrassed to approach them. They might think I am being a VIP because they all woke up early and I woke up late.

“Good morning, everyone.” I greeted them softly, they all turned to me.

“You seemed to be sound asleep, Princess.” the King jested.

I just tried to laugh at him out of embarrassment. I sat between Alvaro and Alfaro. That’s the only empty seat available there.

Alvaro gave me the bowl of rice. I took it and put it on my plate. I was about to eat when I turned my sight to the two Princes beside me. They were both looking straight at me. I was stunned.

“I-Is there a dirt on my face?” I asked them uncomfortably, I even stuttered.

Alvaro just shook his head and went back to eating. Alfaro just made fun of me and grinned. I shrugged.

What's their problem?

I just ignored them. We were just eating quietly when the King suddenly spoke. We all paid attention to him.

“I requested Princess Emerald to stay here in our palace for a while.” he began. “But she must personally say goodbye to her parents. One of you should accompany her this afternoon to their Kingdom.”

“I’ll do it,” the two insisted at the same time.

They both glared at each other. I leaned back in my chair. I remembered that I was in their middle. I shifted my gaze to them two. I suddenly felt the growing tension between the two of them.
