Chapter 12

Roman

After yesterday’s events, Apollo still refuses to speak to me. I have tried shifting a couple of times but, no luck. I know Apollo is refusing to speak to me and letting me shift but, he is being childish. Thanks to him, I’ve been hearing whispers from the pack members, I guess the rumours does spread fast.

I was at the gym and I was practising my boxing skills but every time my fists struck the bag like I usually do, my knuckles begin to bruise and my super fast healing hasn’t kicked in. This was getting more and more frustrating and annoying. The longer my wolf keeps up the sulking, there’s a high chance the elders are going to get involved and that’s the last thing that I need.

“What’s wrong, Roman? Is Apollo still sulking?” Lindsay asked me after coming into the room.

“I’m afraid so, I don’t know what else to do. Apollo won’t talk to me all because I refuse to accept that rogue you call my true mate,” I told her as I rubbed my sore knuckles.

“Well, he’s going to have to get over it. Riley is definitely not Luna material.”

“True but, it still doesn’t explain why she has that insane strength or how she was able to fight off those rogues so easily without breaking a sweat. I am telling you, there’s something off about that rouge and she is hiding something from us and I am going to find out.”

I told Lindsay with a determined look on my face while she smirked at me.

“And then, we can have our Alpha and Luna ceremony?”

“Of course,” I smirked back before I grabbed her and then kissing her while dipping her in my arms.

Riley

I felt a shiver through my spine while I was sitting on a park bench and reading a history book for homework. I looked around and then I shrugged it off since it may have been someone gossiping about me, it might be the Alpha.

“Hey, you!” A familiar voice called to me.

I looked up and Lucy was smiling and waving at me. I smiled back and I stood up from the bench before we hugged each other.

“Hey buddy, how are you?” Lucy asked me.

“I’m fine thanks.”

We sat down on the bench and then we got to chatting.

“I know last night’s hospital visit wasn’t exactly the perfect reunion but, this will do.”

“Hehe, got that right,” I spoke with a smile.

“So, spill. What have you been doing over the last 8 years after I became a pack member?”

“Oh you know me; living in the woods or on the streets, scraping for food and of course, stealing from houses and their pockets. I was living the life of a free wolf.”

Lucy laughed when I told her this and then she asked me.

“So if the so called ‘wanderer’ was enjoying life outside of the pack life, what are you doing here?”

“Well, I was planning to go to Florida once I had enough money but sadly, pack warriors found me and then they brought me here after Roman found out that I’m his true mate.”

“Shut the front door!” Lucy exclaimed with a shocked look. “You’re mated to the Alpha of the Dawnguard?! the world’s most rogue hater?!”

“I’m afraid so, I think Selene has made a mistake mating me with that prat. Anyway, I was planning to leave the next day after I spent the night at Matthew’s place but, he was able to convince me to take classes here. Apparently, he thinks that I should get some grades and make a CV so it’s easier for me to get a job.”

“Oh, so that’s why you’ve stuck around a lot longer than usual.”

“I know it’s not like me but, he has made a good point. Once I graduate from school, I’m getting the hell out of this pack.”

Lucy looked surprised when I told her this and then she asked me.

“You mean you don’t want to join a pack after graduation? why?”

“I’m a wild wolf, remember? I don’t belong in the pack. Roman has made that very clear including that bimbo you call a Luna. Might as well face it, Luc. Rouges are not welcomed into packs.”

“Well, not all of them,” Lucy pointed out.

“Obviously except for you. But me? I don’t do so well in packs. You can’t tame this wolf,” I spoke with a smirk on my face.

“Point taken. By the way, how’s your mother? I haven’t seen her around since you’ve been here. Is she hiding from the pack while you’re here?” Lucy asked me as she looked around.

I looked away sadly and I told her.

“I’m sorry, Lucy. My mother died not too long ago from TB.”

Lucy’s eyes widen and she looked shocked. She gave me that sympathy look before placing her hand on my shoulder. “Riley, I am so sorry.”

“Don’t be. She wanted to die. There was treatment for her when I took her to the pack hospital but she refused it. She told me she wanted to be with her mate and I respected her wishes before I left.”

“Poor Claire. She was like a second mother to me,” Lucy spoke sadly.

“I know but, we’ve got to move on. I won’t let my mother’s death affect me. I need to keep my held high and be strong,” I spoke proudly.

Lucy chuckle and then she said to me.

“Now that’s the Riley I remember. A proud, brave and scary rouge.”

I laughed when she called me this before we stood up from the bench and then we went for a walk.

“Enough about me, what about you? how were you after you joined this pack?” I asked Lucy with a smile.

“It’s been great. The pack doctors took me in and they raised me. After I graduated from Highschool, I went to med school for a while and long story short, I got my degree and I’ve become the best doctor in the pack. Plus, I’m a researcher.”

“Researcher?” I asked in a confused tone.

“Yeah, that room you snuck into last night was my office and my lab. Whenever we find orphaned pups or rogues like you, the Alpha comes to me and he asks me to research on their background history, their families, what pack they originally came from etc. The usual stuff that you find in someone’s profile.”

“And that’s what he wanted you to do last night after Matthew took that piece of hair from me?” I asked with a small frown.

“Yeah, but you don’t have to worry. I wasn’t going to do it. I made a promise to you and your mother remember? We’re best friends no, we’re practically like sisters. We’ve got each other’s backs even though one of us is a pack member now,” Lucy spoke with a smile making me giggle.

“Good to hear. But the big question is, have you found your mate yet?” I asked with a smirk.

“Not yet, I don’t know where he is. I often wonder if he’s a rogue or that he’s in a different pack or he could be...you know?” Lucy ran her finger under her chin to make a sign that said ‘dead’.

“Don’t say that, I’m sure he’s out there somewhere. Hopefully, he won’t turn out to be a prick unlike your idiot Alpha. No offence,” I told her.

“None taken. I think he’s an idiot for rejecting you just because you’re rouge but then again, after what happened years ago-” Lucy covered her mouth before she could finish that sentence.

“What? Lucy, did something happen to Roman that made him hate rogues?” I asked her.

Lucy looked away from me and she mumbled.

“No...not really...”

“Lucy, I can tell you’re lying. You’ve got a terrible poker face.”

Lucy sighed in defeat and then she said to me.

“I’ll tell you, but not here. Come on, let’s head back to my place and I’ll explain.”

I nodded my head and then we headed back to her apartment. After we got there, Lucy started to tell me about Roman and the reason why he hates rogues.

“Years ago when Roman was young, he and his parents went for a run after he first shifted into his wolf form. From what Matthew told me, he was happy that he got to spend it with his parents especially his mother since they were so close together. But then they came across a rogue. He seemed innocent at the time, he claimed that he had escaped from an evil pack who abused him so, they took him in and they hoped that he would become one of them but...”

“But he tricked them didn’t he?” I asked Lucy before she nodded her head.

“That’s right. Turns out the rogue was actually a spy. He manipulated Roman’s parents and after discovering the weaknesses around the pack boarders there was a battle between them and a rogue pack. The Dawnguard pack won but, they suffered a lot of casualties. Roman's mother managed to survive but...his father was among them."

My eyes widen when she told me this before she continued.

“I’m not sure what happened that day but from what the other pack members told me, he tried to protect his mate when they were fighting the rouge Alpha and the beta. After the previous Alpha was killed, Roman took over the role as Alpha at a young age. Ever since that day, Roman grew a strong hatred for the rogues and he would kill them on sight except for those who found their mates here in the pack or they’re orphaned pups. Those who didn’t fit into those categories, they weren’t so lucky.”

I was shocked when she told me this and then Aurora whimpered sadly.

“Poor mate...no wonder he hates us. He takes one look at us and he jumps to conclusions.”

“Hold on, if Roman hates rogues that much then, how come you were able to join the pack?”

“Hello! did you forget that my birth parents were killed. I was orphan until a kind couple took me in. I was one of the lucky ones and so are you. Don’t you see Riley? There’s a reason why the Moon Goddess paired you two. You’re the only one who can change his mind about the rogues and prove to him that not all of them are evil,” Lucy told me.

I sighed heavily and I shook my head.

“Sorry Luc. The Moon Goddess has made a mistake. No matter what I say to him, he won’t listen to me and he already has a mate. He’s made up his mind and so have I. Might as well accept the fact that he will never change his mind and I don’t care if his wolf sulks forever.”

Lucy sighed in defeat and then she said to me.

“Well, there is another way to change his mind.”

“What’s that?”

“Reveal your true identity to him. Once he learns what you are, he’s gonna regret hurting you and your wolf.”

“No! bad idea!” I shouted at her.

“If someone finds out about my bloodline, it would spell trouble. You know what happened to my father and my old pack. I can’t take the risk.”

“Riley, it’s been 17 years since that day. No one knows that you’re the heir to the Winterpaw pack. The current Alpha of that pack doesn't know about you. Maybe it's time to reveal yourself and take back what's rightfully yours. You and I both know that you can't remain a rogue forever because if you do leave this pack after graduation, someone will end your life because of what you are."

I know that Lucy has made a point but, the question is...am I ready to take back the Alpha title and reveal my so called mate about what I am?
