Chapter 15

When we got closer to the Collosseum, Darius leaned over to me and wanted to know why I always addressed James in private by his second name, Malachy.

The thought occurred to him right now, as I had just done it again while toasting him with the Piccolo bottle.

In his usual belligerent manner, he rushed forward and emphasised, “And don’t tell me any nonsense. You promised me, Sis!” There was no mistaking his slightly pouty undertone.

“Remember that night at the Collosseum when I disappeared into the private room with a stranger?“ I asked casually.

This statement caused Darius to turn his head even closer to me. If at the beginning this topic seemed to be just an excuse for Darius to tease, his curiosity was now completely piqued. “Yes, I remember.”

I answered him dryly, as if it was no big deal: “The stranger in the private room was James, who had introduced himself to me as Malachy. Since then, in private, he’s been my sexy Malachy, not James the Regent.”

Now I had to laugh out loud at my own joke. “You know the rest of the story.”

Darius’ jaw dropped and his gaze drifted first to Malachy, who grinned in amusement, and then to Amie, who shrugged indifferently.

We couldn’t delve any further into the subject as our limo had already come to a halt in front of the Collosseum.

After we got out and walked to the club, Darius took Amie’s hand and murmured in her ear, “You knew, didn’t you?”

Amie smiled innocently at him and replied, “Yes. Why do you think I was so relaxed about all the drama surrounding the debutante ball and Maggie’s impromptu move into castle ‘Green Willow’? It was just a guess at first, but Maggie quickly confirmed it for me.”

The usually tough Darius was completely perplexed and stunned.

“You cheeky little minx!” he exclaimed, slapping Amie on the buttocks.

When the bouncers recognised James, we were waved right past the queue of waiting clubbers.

Once inside the club, the floor shook under my feet from the deep bass that invited us to dance. Amie’s and my feet were tingling and we wanted to head straight for the dance floor, but Malachy and Darius led us towards the VIP area, past the LED curtain, to a cosy table with four armchairs.

“Put your things down first, ladies, before you enter the fray,” Darius remarked with an amused grin.

Malachy turned directly to me.

“What do you want to drink, love?”

I grinned briskly at him and said, “A ‘gin and tonic’, please. For old times’ sake.”

Malachy laughed heartily and joined me in my choice of drink.

Amie and I were already hopping impatiently from one leg to the other. Malachy rolled his eyes in mock annoyance.

“Come on! Go and dance girls! You’re making me nervous!”

We didn’t need to be told twice. I grabbed Amie’s hand and pulled her down the stairs towards the big dance floor. ’Dj Snake & Lil John” was playing at a deafening volume and we easily mingled with the partying clubbers.

No sooner had we warmed up than we were surrounded and danced at by several men - annoying, but I also noticed Malachy’s attentive gaze, which I found very amusing.

By the time Maggie and Amie had made their way to the dance floor, their men had taken care of the drinks.

By now they were sitting comfortably in the stools at the table, holding their drinks and watching their girls. Whereas it was more James who was watching Maggie, eyeing the men dancing around her with suspicious glances and scowls.

This was also noticed by Darius, who grinned amusedly at James and then drew attention to himself with a clearing of his throat, because James seemed to be completely spellbound by the sight.

“Why don’t you go to her? You can’t concentrate on anything but Maggie, anyway.”

James looked at him. “You’re right.”

He stood up, took her drink and walked in her direction to the Main Dancefloor.

He didn’t care at all about the languorous stares of the other female, as well as male, party-goers at the club. He had only one goal: Maggie, whom he was already undressing with his gaze on the dance floor.

When she caught sight of him, she beamed up to both ears, came towards him and put her arms possessively over his shoulders. She interlaced her fingers behind his head, snuggled close to him and kissed him.

James was momentarily speechless, overwhelmed by all the impressions: Maggie’s closeness, her smell, her bare arms around his neck and her kiss....

After she had detached herself from him, he handed her her glass with the ‘gin and tonic’ with a stiff movement. With a seductive grin, she accepted the glass and spoke loudly in his ear, “Is that the only reason you came to me?”

Now his confident, sexy grin was on display, again. “No, just an excuse.”

Maggie put her glass to her lips and drank it all in one go. Then she shook herself, wiped her lips with the back of her hand and replied cheekily, “Good. Now let’s get down to the real reason you paid me a visit on the dance floor.”

She pressed her empty glass into the hand of the nearest clubber. She then kissed James passionately, grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the VIP area and the private rooms.
