Chapter 16

The smell of wood burning woke me up. I struggled opening my eyes, my body still feeling weak from the events that happened. When my eyes finally opened I noticed a small fire going with a pot hanging over it. I barely look at my surroundings and noticed were in a small house.

"Ahh, you're awake," I heard a women's voice. My vision fully cleared and I see her. It was an elderly woman with short hair. She was sitting on the other side of the fire. Her features were soft.

“Where am I?” My voice was hoarse, probably from all the yelling last night. I see the lady stand up, she’s probably about the same height as me, but she’s built more on the thicker side. She walked over to the pot over the fire and stirred.

“Don’t worry dear, you’re safe here in my little hut in the woods.” She turned to me to smile after pouring a liquid in a wooden bowl. “I’ve been watching you for awhile and I’m glad I’ve finally got you in my care.”
Her words caused me to go on high alert. I hesitated to take the bowl from her. When I saw her grab a bowl and began eating I started to relax. I realized I was really hungry and ate in silence. Once I finished I was ready to ask more questioned.

“I’m a little confused on what you’re talking about, ma’am.” I gave her a confused look when gently setting down the wooden bowl.

“Oh sweet child, call me charity.” She placed her bowl down as well. She slowly got up and got extremely close to my face to study it. “Ahh, I see. You’ve only just begun young child. Now that you’re in my care, I’ll help you flourish.” She gently grabbed my face, I saw a slight sparkle in her eyes.

“Huh?” I’m still confused and she laughs.

“Don’t worry so much, I’ll explain more at your training tomorrow. My grandson will be back sometime tomorrow morning. It’s dark out so it’s best you go to sleep.” She patted my head and walked through a small door, I’m assuming is probably her room.

I laid back down on the ground and realized it wasn’t hard. I noticed I was laying on a pile of blankets. I laid there for a while trying to wrap my head around everything, especially the lady that brought me. Who is she? What does she want from me? What does her words mean?

All my thoughts and the warmth of the fire made me sleepy, I rolled to my side, facing the fire, and fell asleep.

I woke up, but this time there was light in the hut. It must be morning now. Still half asleep I hear a door opening. An older looking man walked through the door.

We looked at each other for a second and that’s when the lady came out of the room she went into last night.

“Ah, my dear son you’re home.” She walked up and hugged him with a smile on her face. They embraced each other in a hug.

After they broke the hug, charity looked up at her son, who was looking at me. I couldn’t exactly read his expression so I just stared back.

“So that’s her, huh?” The man asked. Charity looked over at me smiling.

“Yes sir, she’s even prettier in person isn’t she?” All her son did was continue to stare at me, but this time I see a small glare peaking through his eyes. Not sure what his problem is. “Mikey dear, why don’t you show Stormi to the waterfall so she can get cleaned up?” Charity patted her sons chest before grabbing a basket.

“Here Stormi dear, there’s a towel and one of your gowns we brought from the kingdom.” I got up and hesitated when grabbing the basket.

“How do you know my name? How you did you get my stuff?” I asked, now face to face with charity. She gave me a soft smile.

“When it’s time for you to know these answers, they will be told to you. For now, just go along with it. I promise you’re safe. We’ve been patiently waiting for you to come along.” She spoke softly, clearly trying to calm me.

Fear still seeps deep within, but I try to brush it off. Maybe her words are genuine. Plus I have a place to live and I can’t exactly go back to the kingdom. I’ll just try to go along with things.

Mikey walked in front of me the entire time to the waterfall. Once we approached it, he told me to not worry about looking and that he’s just going to be behind the trees standing on guard.

As I’m soaking in the fairly warm waters by the water, I’m wondering why someone needs to stand guard. No one hardly ever comes to the forest anyways besides to hunt and gather herbs.

I got out of the water and took the towel and quickly dried my body off. I put on the gown that charity packed, I realized it’s the gown I wore when me and Zeruko when to the festival. Sadness hit me, just as tears were about to fall, Mikey spoke up.

“Are you about done?” He spoke loud enough for me to hear him, but he kept his word about not looking.

“Yea I’m done.” I quickly threw my uniform in the basket and took the towel and started drying my hair. I look over to see Mikey coming from behind one of the trees, always looking so serious.

The walk back to the hut, Mikey took the basket so I could finish drying my hair. I heard him huff and I looked up at him.

“Why would anyone ever want their hair that long, especially an ex warrior. You should talk to my mother to see if she can cut it for you.” He had an attitude behind his words. I rolled my eyes and just kept walking. I’ve never cut my hair, never thought about it either. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to cut it.
