Chapter One

Illyria sat alone on her 18th birthday, a small cupcake on the table in front of her. She had waited for this day for years, but it wasn't as great as she expected it to be.
Illyria frowned, looking down at the cupcake that had no candle on it. She got up and rummaged through the kitchen, finding a small bag of candles in the cupboard. She grabbed two candles that wrote, "18" when put together. Before she went back to the table, one of the candles caught her eye and she grabbed it, setting the other two back. It was silver with golden specks on it, and although it didn't spell out "18" it intregued Illyria. Just something about it felt special and made her feel special.

Illyria sat back down and put the candle on her small cupcake, then picked up her lighter and lit it up. The small fleck of fire glowed dimly in the dark room, it danced in the air as she put it to the small wick of her candle. She set the lighter back down and simply stared at the flickering candle. Illyria thought about what she wanted to wish for, of all the possible things she could want. She knew it probably wouldn't come true but it was worth a shot.

A simple word rang throughout her brain.. Freedom. That's all she wanted. She wanted a world where she could be free, unlike where she was now..

Illyria's parents were always busy all the time, her mother was a lawyer and her father a CEO at a famous company. They never spent time with her, and when they did, she was only given negative comments on how she was doing in school. They never believed in her and made her take extra classes on top of school, thinking it would make her do better. They always thought more pressure made things better. Illyria felt trapped, with no where to escape. So all she really wanted was Freedom.

She blew out the candle with the single word repeating in her head. And with a slimmer of hope, she went to bed.
