Chapter Seven ~ Surprise

I wake up to something warm. I draw myself in closer, familiarising myself with this foreign feeling. What even was this?

I open my eyes and scream, jumping out of the bed in surprise and landing with a thud.

Odysseus's eyes widen as he looks over the edge of bed to see me mirroring the same expression. He laughs whole heartedly at me causing my face to break out into a small smile.

No I shouldn't be feeling like this. He's the enemy.

A scowl replaces the smile on my lips. I get up and head to the bathroom, locking it behind me. There was no way I was giving him to chance to come in.

I do all of my morning rituals before walking out of the bathroom. He throws me a pair of his shorts and another hoodie.

"Am I going to be wearing your clothes forever?" I ask him in a joking manor.

"Maybe," he shrugs, a small smile playing at his plump lips. I look into his deep brown eyes before realising he's already staring at me. A blush rises on my cheeks before I quickly run back into the bathroom, slamming the door and locking it again. I change into the clothes Odysseus had handed me before unlocking the door and walking back out.

"Tatum, I'm sorry for losing control last night," he says to me causing me to look up at him, his smile I was growing to like no longer in sight. He was dead serious.

"It's ok," I say looking down at the floor in front of him, not wanting to continue anymore with this conversation.

"It's not Tatum, I scared you. Maybe you couldn't hear the pain in your voice or see the hurt on your face. But I could... so I'm sorry, princess," he says to me, a small frown favouring his lips.

I keep my eyes down but nod my head in understanding.

"I've got work again today but I'll be free to hang out at four if you want..." he says to me, I look up at him through my eyelashes. Did I want to hang out with him?
"I'd love to get to know you more," he says looking sincerely into my eyes, my heartbeat increases as I quickly cast my eyes down at my feet.

Please stop doing this to me, you stupid mate bond.

"Yeah sure, maybe," I say to him. Not wanting to get his hopes up.

His smile fades a little, clearly feeling dejected by his mates rejection.

"I'm going to go and find Onyx," I say in a soft voice, no longer wanting to be around him.

"I'll be in my office if you need me," he calls out as I exit the room, the door clicking shut softly behind me.

I shake my head free of Odysseus and ignore the pang in my heart. I could feel the pain of my mate.

I knew that humans could feel less of the mate bond than an actual werewolf... I remember my village always said; it would break a wolf's heart being rejected by his mate, but as humans we wouldn't feel it as bad. It would hurt but we could move on from it, where as a wolf couldn't.

My thoughts wonder back to my village at the memory. I found it hard to believe those sweet people could be capable of what Odysseus was accusing them of. But you never know, people can surprise you when you least expect it.

Now that I know the werewolves sides I can start to see the true colours of the people that lived in my village. They were also monsters. But not as much as the ones I live with.

I couldn't think straight as I reached Onyx's door. I shook my head free of my thoughts before I bring my hand up to knock on her door.

"Come in, Tatum," she says before I even have the chance to knock.

I open the door and peak my head through the crack.

"How did you know someone was there? heck! Better yet how did you know it was me?" I ask entering her room.

I watch as she sits up, her outfit telling me she was ready for the day.

"Easy, for one. Your scent. You smell like my brother and two, your thoughts are so loud I can practically hear them," she jokes as I close the door behind me.

"All jokes aside what are you here for babes?" She asks me, smiling.

"Oh uh... Odysseus said he had to go to work," I say shuffling on the spot, feeling awkward. Did he forget to tell her she was on babysitting duty...

...Honestly, I'm just telling the truth. I'm never alone unless it's in the bathroom.

"Oh yes! Silly me! Of course I remember! I wouldn't have minded anyway," she says happily with a smile.

"Is there anything specific you wanna do today?" She asks me, and gets up to sit on the edge of her bed.

"I don't know," I say thoughtfully, thinking of the possibilities.

"Do you want to go to the pool again?" She asks me, I shake my head. Today was cold and even though the water was warm I wanted to stay fully clothed.

"Maybe a walk in the woods?" I suggest, wanting to see the scenery.

I look over at her and see her bite her lip nervously, her eyes housing a foggy glaze causing me swallow the lump in my throat.

"What is it?" I ask her, eager to know what's going on.

"Odysseus doesn't want you going outside," she says after minute, looking down at her lap nervously.

"What? Why not?" I blurt out, wanting answers.

"I'm not sure Tate. You could probably ask him," onyx starts to say but I abruptly cut her off.

"Where is his office?" I ask her, determined to convince him to let me go outside. He couldn't keep me locked up in here like some damn princess.

"It's in the other point of the castle," she says to me clutching her bed sheets anxiously.

"Thanks," I say to her before abruptly spinning on my heels.

"Do you need help?" She calls out as I exit her room.

"No I'm ok! Thank you though," I call out to her, continuing on my way.

I walk the halls and suddenly end up finding myself very lost. I keep walking until I find a window, the points of the castle were around the edges so as long as I followed the windows, I was eventually bound to find one of the points. Hopeful it ended up being the one I was looking for.

After about an hour I finally find the point, it was slightly lower than the other point which I had failed to notice.

I catch my breath as I finish the last few steps. As I'm about to open the door I quiet down upon hearing voices.

"Sir, do you really think it's a great idea? To keep her only within the castle walls? I don't think she'd be in favour of that," a unfamiliar voice says, holding confidence.

"It doesn't matter what she thinks, it's what's best for her safety," I hear Odysseus argue gruffly, causing desire to pool between my legs.

"We could take care of her sir. I promise you she would always be safe under our care," the same unknown voice says, trying to convince him.

"I know that, Asher. But as of right now with what those filthy humans have been planning I'm not going to be taking any chances with my mate," I hear Odysseus say, suddenly it clicks. They were talking about me.

I wanted to barge in there and defend the humans, my people but then remembered what Odysseus said they had done. I was quick to judge and blame the wolves when all they have done is abide by the rules of the agreement. And now that I knew the facts I would not defend the people who had caused chaos upon our civilisation.

I was done defending my own kind.

I hear them stop talking and suddenly footsteps thud across the room in front of me.

The door swings open revealing a very disheveled Odysseus, somehow managing to look even more untamed and sexy than he did this morning.

"Tatum?" he asks raising an eyebrow, clearly surprised by my arrival.

"How did you know I was here?" I ask, giving him back the same expression.

"I could smell you... how long have been standing here?" He asks me. I hesitate causing him to raise his eyebrow higher.

"Not very long," I say sheepishly, my eyes darting to the floor below.

"Very well, I thought Onyx was watching you, clearly she's not doing her job," he says, following his statement with a growl.

I clear my throat unintentionally and look up at him. Wanting to defend my only friend here.

"I told her to stay, I said I wanted to be alone, to cope," I say, trying to save her from punishment.

Well at least part of it was true, I did need to cope and I didn't need help.

"Very well. Come in Tatum, I have some wolves I'd like you to meet," Odysseus says, stepping back from the doorway, letting me in.

I walk in shyly with my head facing my toes.

"Tatum, this is Asher and Dawson," Odysseus says placing a hand on my lower back, sending shivers down my spine.

I look up to meet their eyes. Surprised to see two people. They looked kind of similar with their light brown eyes, and blonde hair. The only difference being that the one on the left with had a scar that ran down his mid cheek to his neck.

"Hi, Luna Tatum. I'm Asher and this is my brother Dawson, It's a pleasure to meet you," he says getting up, extending his hand out to me.

"Likewise," I say. Looking at his hand I hesitate, but put my hand forward anyway. A loud growl causes us both to retract our hands. As my gaze shifts back my feet.

Jealousy and possessiveness rolling off of him waves, making me uncomfortable in my own skin. It belonged to none other than the man... I mean beast, Odysseus himself.

"Now that we have established that," Odysseus says with a heavy sigh going to sit back in his chair.

"Lets get to the reason why my mate has blessed us with her lovely presence," Odysseus says with a tight-lipped smile. Clearly not over his possessiveness.

I narrow my eyes remembering why I was in here in the first place.

"Why am I not allowed outside?" I ask him with attitude, causing him to growl at me.

"Leave," he growls, commanding the boys to leave. So he does do this often, I guess it's his thing.

"Well?" I ask as the door clicks softly behind them, signalling we were alone.

"Because it's not safe, my love. Only with me are you able to go outside," he says gently. Reaching up to caress my cheek.

"Why?" I ask angrily, pulling away from his hold.
"I can take care of myself," I say to him angrily, I was an independent woman. I didn't need him those eighteen years of my life and I sure as hell didn't need him "protecting me" now.

"I'm sure you can, but until I deem my territory safe, you are to obey my order just as everyone else," he says to me, a stern look on his face. Daring me to disobey him.

"You're a bastard," I spit at him before storming out the door, not caring of the consequences.
