Chapter 3- The best birthday present
Chapter 3- The best birthday present
Today is my birthday.
It has been two weeks since I was rejected by Liam and the pain still lingers in my chest and my soul.
Everywhere I walk people point and laugh at me, so I try to keep my head down and blend into the crowd.
For two weeks I haven’t heard a single thing from my wolf again, she has gone quiet as if she never came back at all.
When I came downstairs this morning two things caught my attention, the first one was that there was no one in the house, which was strange because usually my mother was there, and two they had forgotten my birthday. Again.
Although this doesn’t surprise me it still hurts as they are my family, the only ones who I have here and yet, its like they don’t want me to be here. Sighing I grab my bag before I head out the door on my way to work.
Now most wolves get to go on patrol and do training or some other cool things whilst I get to work in a small shop.
The area we live in has no humans in it, all the land is owned by the pack which means we don’t have to worry about anyone just seeing us.
That means the people I am serving are wolves and they always make snide comments about me and it has only gotten worse after the rejection.
As I walk the few minutes I let myself dream of what my life would have been like if I was normal, if I never shifted at such a young age, if my parents loved me and I had friends who cared about me.
There is no point in dreaming though, this is my life although it might be shitty it was mine and I will not be pushed around anymore.
I have started talking back to those who make comments instead of letting them walk all over me. This of course shocked them the first time into silence so I was able to walk away with a smile on my face but, I have a feeling it might blow up in my face.
As I reach the shop and push the door open the little bell tinkles letting someone know I have arrived but, there is no one here.
Sighing I get to work, making sure all the shelves are stacked up and that all the stock is rotated so anything new goes to the back.
After hours of sorting everything out I was ready to go, opening the shop I already had a few people waiting outside for me. I said nothing to them as the barged past me into the shop to get whatever it is they needed.
It was nine in the morning, it couldn’t have been that important. Rolling my eyes I make my way back behind the till so I can sort them out when they are done.
After five minutes they come rushing up to the counter and throw their things at me, snapping at me to hurry up with it.
Taking my time I scan their items before making sure I carefully pack them in the bag and giving them their total.
They throw the dollars at me before walking out huffing and puffing.
The rest of the days goes by slowly, a few kids my age walk in acting out my rejecting scene, whilst I tell them where to stick it which causes them to shut up.
Finally at 5 o’clock, I cash up and take my pay out of it before putting the rest in the safe, before heading out and locking the door.
The short walk back to the house isn’t long enough in my opinion as I know what I’ll be faced with, two parents who don’t love me and a brother who stands by whilst other kids pick on me, mentally and physically.
Walking in as quietly as I can, I make my way up the stairs and rush into my bedroom before anyone can try to take any money off of me.
Sighing I lock my door before I walk over to the bed and push it aside slightly, there is nothing under my bed but carpet but if you know where to look I cut a small piece of it out.
I lift out the carpet and the wooden floor board underneath to see my small metal box, inside is my passport, all my money and a ring that my mum gave me when I was seven, it was my grandmother’s and I used to play with it all the time, pretending it was my wedding ring.
I push the cash in the box before closing it and putting everything back the way it was.
After a quick shower and a change of clothes there is a knock at my door.
Rushing over I unlock it knowing I’ll get in trouble for locking the door.
There on the other side of the door stood my older brother, Kaden.
He has a stupid smile on his face which already tells me he has something to say.
“Now now Harlow, you know you’re not allowed to lock your door. How do you think mum and dad would feel?” His voice is mocking, goading me to react to him but I won’t give him the satisfaction.
“I was in the shower Kaden, I didn’t want anyone walking in and snooping around.”
I say his name with as much venom as I can muster, causing him to raise his eyebrows at me and his smile to widen.
“Now that isn’t very nice is it little Harlow. You’ve wounded me”
He emphasis’s this point by putting his hand over his heart with his eyes sparkling with amusement.
I roll my eyes not really caring anymore.
“Good, maybe you’ll stay that way, now what do you want?”
He rolls his eyes at me before dragging me out of my room and down the stairs.
Whilst my brother never laid a hand on me, or really said anything mean to me he never stopped it either and that is just as worse in my opinion.
“There is a meeting for the whole pack, including you, starting in 5 minutes. You wouldn’t want to be late now would you?”
I curse him out as I rush to get my shoes on as I make my way to the pack house where the alpha and a few chosen others get to live, and I pray that I won’t be late.
As I make my way into the meeting room I’m relieved to see I’m just in time, I make my way along the back and take a seat nearest to the door, should I need to make a hasty escape, always be prepared.
The meeting is boring, it has nothing to do with me and I’ve nearly fallen asleep twice.
As the meeting comes to a close I realise I have only been brought here so I have the shittest birthday alive. So they can rub it in my face without actually acknowledging what is going on.
Standing up I make my way to the exit along with everyone else but I am stopped my one of the guards, I try to go around them but it is no use.
Sighing I turn around and see the alpha walking towards me.
“I noticed you didn’t seem to enjoy the meeting all that much” it was a statement, not a question and I knew he was right.
“Well it’s not like it has anything to do with me, I’m barely apart of this pack.” I knew I had over stepped the line when his eyes turned ablaze.
“Don’t you dare talk to me like that, I am your alpha, you should be grateful I’m allowing you to these meetings, I do not want back chat from you, you are apart of this pack and nothing will change that!”
He shouts the last part in my face, his face is red and there are veins popping in his head but I don’t care anymore so I shout back at him.
“I don’t want to be apart of this pack, I never have! You guys are awful, you treat me like scum and I’d rather be a rouge then be apart of your pack!”
There is a loud cracking noise that fills the air that causes the alpha to double over like he is in pain. I stare at him in bewilderment, what is happening?
I am slammed with all my senses as the come alive, I can see things more clearly, I can smell the people that were in the room before and that are outside the door, I can hear the footsteps upstairs. I can feel my wolf in my mind and soul as she stirs, restless as she has been copped up too long.
I don’t understand what is going on but I don’t want to stay around to find out, I bolt for the door and slam into it instead as I move at such a fast speed.
Dazed slightly I pull it open and run out of the pack house not knowing where to go.
I can feel my wolf enjoying being outside and it feels nice knowing that she is there.
You have to run now, you can’t stay here, it isn’t safe.
Her voice is soft but demanding and I can’t help but listen to her but I still have loads of questions.
I’m not entirely sure how to speak to her so I just think what I want her to hear.
How can I run, I’m stuck here under his command.
You broke free of his hold, the snap you heard was the bond that held you here, the tie between you and the alpha, by declaring you no longer wanted to be apart of the pack you broke the bond and you were set free, they can not control you anymore but you have to run, otherwise the will capture us and we’ll never be free.
I nod my head in understating as I rush home and grab all my money, passport and the ring. I stuff it all into a bag as I rush and grab some clothes and toiletries.
Once I have the things I need I run for it.
After 15 minutes of hard running I’m at the edge of the pack territory one more step and I’m free, this is my chance and I’m not missing out again.
I take the step.
