Prologue

It was the voice of my father that was always the worst. Even in dreams, I couldn’t seem to stop myself from weeping at the sound of it. “I’m sorry, Dad, I’m sorry.”

I never remembered the dream too well, only the blood and the flames and my father’s voice. And my mother’s.

“Not our daughter,” my mother would screech. “You’re a monster now, Maya. How can we love a monster?”

“You can’t, Mama, you can’t.”

The flames would begin at my mother’s feet, moving too slowly. That should’ve been my clue it was just a dream, but the panic was always the same. “No, Mama. Please, no.”

My mother would be engulfed by flames as she asked the real question. The one thing that had haunted me since I was a child. “How can we let a monster live?”

“You can’t, Mama, you can’t.”

And then the flames swallowed my mother, and I would cry for her, would scream for her until my throat was raw. “Mama, Mama, please Mama, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

I would usually wake then. Sometimes Will was beside me, his face panicked and hands raised as he desperately tried to remind me of where I was. Sometimes it was Audrey, who would hug me and promise that things were better now.

But most nights, like tonight, it was Jake. I wrapped my arms around him like I did when I was a child. Brushing my hair from my face, he waited for me to calm down before he spoke. “They’ve been getting worse again, haven’t they?” It was posed as a question, but my adoptive father was never one to ask things he didn’t already know the answer to.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” he said. “It’s because of your human friend, the Wilder boy, isn’t it?”

I hesitated before eventually nodding.

He sighed. “I was going to wait until tomorrow to tell you, but… something tells me that will only cause more problems.”

I hugged him tighter. “Did something else happen?”

There was a moment of silence before he said, “They found his body, Maya.”

I released my arms, bolting upright. “That’s... How...”

“His wounds indicate an animal attack,” he said. “But there were some... inconsistencies.”

I blinked. “Inconsistencies? What kind of-”

“Maya,” Jake said. “The Council is claiming that it wasn’t an ordinary animal attack.”

My eyes widened as the words turned over and over in my mind. It wasn’t an ordinary animal. “Oh, God, Jake. Please tell me it wasn’t-”

“They’re saying it was a werewolf.”

My heart stuttered, thudded against my chest, threatened to break free of my body. I shook my head in denial, feeling sick as I said, “A werewolf? But there are only two packs here.”

“I know,” he said. “And the Council will be investigating all of us.”
