The Alchemist Philosophy

FADE IN...

In an upscale living room. As we meet Aaron (20′s, slight, kind). In a “Nirvana” shirt. Installing a new TV. As well as a Blu-Ray. Sonos. Programming their Universal Remote. Aaron does it all. We see his FINGERS, dexterous and deft. He’s quite the tech virtuoso.

MOMENTS LATER. A BILL slips under the door -- to his fiancé, VICTORIA. She only half pays attention, as she returns work emails on her phone.

VICTORIA

Aaron, it’s the rent.

AARON

Seriously? Again? They already billed us this month.

VICTORIA

No, remember, that was the water bill.

Aaron crawls out from under the tv stand, sighs.

AARON

That’s right. Okay, tv’s fixed. I’ll take care of the rent on my way to work.

Aaron just has one of those sincere, earnest faces. He takes his jacket and heads to the kitchen.

Victoria begins coughing, trying to be quiet with it, so Aaron doesn’t notice.

The cough is rough and violent. She grabs a napkin and hacks into it for a moment

She looks at the napkin, seeing BLOOD on it. She covers it up as Aaron steps back into the room, holding a bowl of her favorite soup.

AARON

Here you go, I thought you’d like it.

She tries to smile; he notices the blood on the corner of her lip.

He sighs and his smile fades.

AARON

Again?

VICTORIA

Yeah...

AARON

Its not too late to, yunno... Set up an appointment at the hospital--

VICTORIA

--NO! No... I’d just be put on some waiting list.

AARON

So, that’s it? You’re not even gonna make an effort to fight it?

VICTORIA

We all have to die sometime...

She pulls out her phone, scrolls through her news feed.

Aaron sits down beside her.

AARON

We have to try, don’t we?

She looks up from her phone.

VICTORIA

I don’t want my last few moments spent on a hospital bed. I want to be here, on my own terms.

AARON

Here? In this shitty apartment? With me?

VICTORIA

Of course.

(beat)

Besides, the sex is great.

AARON

(beat)

Wasn’t I late for work yesterday because of that?

VICTORIA

(laughing)

That’s your fault.

AARON

Funny, I don’t remember it that way.

VICTORIA

You leaving yet? Despite your best efforts, I still wanna hear Bowie.

AARON

You just love playing that when I’m not around, don’t you?

VICTORIA

Only because I know youre missing out.

(beat)

Oh! I almost forgot...

Victoria grabs a wrapped present and hurries it over to him. He opens it; a necklace with a RED RUBY inside it. Aaron smiles.

VICTORIA

Happy Birthday.

Aaron packs his lunch and steps outside the door.

EXT. SIDE STREET - NIGHT

OPEN ON A BUS-STOP.

Aaron is walking on the sidewalk, admiring the red ruby necklace Victoria gave him.

He bumps into a man in a tux.

The man seems very charismatic, charming, and sports a smug smirk.

AARON

I’m so sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.

MAN IN TUX

Most people don’t. You’re not the first to cross my path and apologize.

AARON

(awkwardly)

Right... Again, sorry.

He trails past the man in the tux, before he utters the words:

MAN IN TUX

Beautiful necklace.

Aaron stops in his tracks and turns to face the man.

MAN IN TUX

Your lady knows you well. It’s a shame to hear about her condition.

AARON

How do you know about that?

MAN IN TUX

I know many things. I have... tricks in every sleeve.

An old nearly scorched roll of paper flicks out of his sleeve.

MAN IN TUX

I can save her.

Aaron is startled and defensive.

AARON

What did you fucking say?

MAN IN TUX

Victoria. I can save her.

AARON

Even if I believed you, she doesn’t want help.

Aaron turns to leave and the Man in the Tux supernaturally appears in front of him.

MAN IN TUX

She doesn’t need to know.

AARON

(beat)

I don’t have a lot of money... Nothing of value for you.

The man in the tux opens the roll of paper and shows it to Aaron.

It reads, ”Abrenuntio Michael et caelesti ejus erunt tam legionem et potestas, et gloria mundi.” (”I renounce Michael and his heavenly legion and so shall be mine the power and glory of the world.“)

MAN IN TUX

A signature will suffice.

Aaron is very skeptical; his expression says it all.

AARON

I cant read this.

(beat, MAN IN TUX nods)

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re the devil.

As Aaron’s fingers touch the paper, it cuts his index finger and a drop of blood hits the line where his name should be.

MAN IN TUX

No, of course not.

(he smiles big and rolls up the paper)

I’m just someone trying to change the world.

AARON

I didn’t sign it, though. Just bled on it. Sorry...

MAN IN TUX

Don’t worry, this will suffice.

(begins walking onward)

Adios, Aaron. We’ll be seeing each other again soon, I’m sure.

Aaron just looks on, dazed and confused.

CUT TO:

MINUTES LATER:

As Aaron walks on the sidewalk. We hear a phone call. Aaron reaches for his phone, its Victoria.

AARON

Hey. The craziest thing just happened...

(beat)

Like what? Awh, did sweet cheeks miss her kisses?

(Victoria scoffs)

No, I got my badge right...

He notices his badge isn’t on his shirt.

Aaron takes a half-beat. He plays it off, casually.

AARON

Ah... That’s alright. I’ll be back home in a few to get it.

INT. UPPER WEST SIDE APARTMENT - NIGHT

Aaron gets to the door, notices its cracked open.

The door knob is busted; FORCED through.

Aarons face says it all; desperation and fear.

Aaron steps inside only to see-

Blood and gummy bits of viscera spattered all over the rummaged and destroyed living room.

Victoria’s body lays inside all the wreckage. He clutches her tight to his chest. Her arm collapses on the ground and we see an ancient Alchemiac symbol burnt on her wrist.

Aaron is crying. Jittery as hell.

Aaron. Alone. Holding a bloodied, dead fiance. In shock, he can’t let her go. Until some emotion -- horror -- begins to seep in...

AARON

(a whisper) ... V... Vic...

WIDE SHOT. Down the street. Aaron is small in the frame. His voice distant, ragged, wrenching.

INT. AARONS’ APARTMENT – LATER

PHOTOS of VICTORIA. Surrounded by thick FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS.

-Aaron. Sits in the corner. Alone. In a suit and tie. This is post funeral. He holds a plate with a square of ambrosia Jell-O salad on it.

AARON (V.O.)

The police said she must’ve killed herself. That can’t be true. There’s more to it than that.

CLOSE ON AARON. A maelstrom of heartbreak, pain and emotion, beneath a numb shell. He looks up, sees --

POV. Framed portrait of Aaron and Victoria.

AARON (CONT’D)

She was murdered. And no one believes me.

EXT. BRIAR CREEK PARK – NIGHT – 6 MONTHS LATER

Aaron. Sitting on a bench. Despondent. Listening to a MESSAGE on his CELL --

Aaron CLICKS it off.

Victoria’s personal belongings in his hand. A whole fucking ROW of them.

WIDE ANGLE. Aaron. Staring at the riverbank. Hours feeling like minutes. Someone murdered the love of Aaron’s life. And no one was addressing it.

QUICK INTERCUTS of Victoria and Aaron sitting on this bench, smiling and laughing FLASH in between shots of Aaron alone, losing his breath.

Aaron’s chest is heaving now. He slides to the ground, back against the bench. We leave him there -- in the throes of a full blown PANIC ATTACK.

Sitting beside him, out of nowhere --

The Alchemist. Smoking a cigarette and passing him a flask.

ALCHEMIST

Take it easy. Easy! Just breathe.

The Alchemist looks up. He’s got a rough cut, raspy accent. Aaron takes the flask and drinks from it. He immediately hacks it up and pukes!

The Alchemist chuckles a bit and Aaron seems to be breathing, angry, but breathing now.

AARON

What the fuck was that?!

THE ALCHEMIST

Vodka. I thought it’d help.

AARON

HOW?!?!

THE ALCHEMIST

You’re breathing, aren’t you?

AARON

Sorry?

THE ALCHEMIST

You’re breathing now, right?

AARON

Uh, I -- Yeah. I can breathe now.

THE ALCHEMIST

Good. I don’t need you spurting out a goddamn panic attack while I enjoy my smoke of the hour.

(smirks at Aaron)

Goes to show. The things that happen when we think were alone, hoping the bad things will disappear. Always thinking things will go their way, till everything just makes them feel like they’re gonna fuckin’ explode.

AARON

(long beat)

Okay... Is there anything I can help you with?

THE ALCHEMIST

I’m not gonna piss you about, Aaron. I know what happened to Victoria. Fuckin’ tragedy.

AARON

I’m sorry, who are you?

THE ALCHEMIST

AARON

(upset now)

I said who the hell are you? How do you know that?

THE ALCHEMIST

Sage’s the name. People call me Tobias. I was thinkin’ we could have a bit of a chat?

EXT. SIDEWALK - NIGHT

OPEN ON:

Aaron. The Alchemist. Pass more and more pedestrians, as they near the gravel roads near the public park...

AARON

You don’t sound like a Fed.

THE ALCHEMIST

Never fuckin’ said I was...

AARON

You don’t look like one, either.

THE ALCHEMIST

Oh? What do I look like?

AARON

Like a Columbine shooter.

The Alchemist smirks. Aaron’s got spunk.

AARON

Um. So what, exactly, can I do for you?

THE ALCHEMIST

It’s what I can do for you, my son.

Help you get payback for your girl.

(off Aaron)

You ain’t alone, Aaron, happens a lot more than you think. Thousands of people die due to unnatural causes--

AARON

I could have told you that much.

(off The Alchemist)

Sorry.

THE ALCHEMIST

It’s not just that they cant be explained, it’s that no one knows how to fathom such oddities. We’re just ants in an ocean of cunts and raisins.

AARON

C’mon. It’d be all over the news, people’d be talking about the “supernatural-ness” of everything.

THE ALCHEMIST

Might be the odd mention now an’ again, like with Victoria. But there’s a lot more the world won’t tell you.

AARON

Why?

THE ALCHEMIST

Because of this.

He holds his hand out. A flesh bound book in the Alchemist’s palm, its seeping blood from its pages. Aaron turns away and starts pucking at the SMELL of it.

AARON

Is it... is it supposed to be bleeding?

THE ALCHEMIST

Well, given that it’s the Necronomicon, yeah.

Aaron just stares blankly at him.

AARON

Wait, Im sorry, repeat that.

THE ALCHEMIST

(then)

But there are forces out there, plotting and hunting us like foxes that don’t give two fucks about the government or anything in this reality. It’d curl your toes and straighten your pubes the things lurking beyond human understanding.

(beat)

But that’s where I come in.

AARON

Come in... to do what?

THE ALCHEMIST

Kill the fucking superstitions away.

AARON

None of this makes sense.

THE ALCHEMIST

I knew it wouldn’t. Hell, it didn’t make much sense when I was where you are right now. C’mon.

AARON

Where?

ALCHEMIST

You’ll love it.

AARON

Hold on.

(The Alchemist stops)

Thank you for an extremely... weird conversation. But I’m not sure what this is... and I think I should probably get back to...

THE ALCHEMIST

To what?

AARON

... To moping on a bench...

THE ALCHEMIST

Aaron. This is your one an’ only. Besides, don’t you want to know what this mark means?

He flips through the flesh bound book, finding a picture of the same symbol on VICTORIA’S WRIST.

THE ALCHEMIST (CONT’D)

And why it took your happiness?

CLOSE ON AARON. Thinking. Off this --

EXT. ABANDONED HOUSE – NIGHT

The Alchemist and Aaron. Walking toward an old abandoned house, torn to bits. Windows busted, roof caved in, a goddamn nightmare.

AARON

What the hell are we doing here?

THE ALCHEMIST

Got a bit of a problem I need to take care of and for you to understand the things I’ve been talking about, you gotta see it.

AARON

What’s in there?

We hear a shriek come from inside the abandoned building. The two rush inside –-

INT. ABANDONED HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Aaron follows behind The Alchemist who is holding a teenage girl in his arms. Black veins are popping out in her arms, she’s foaming from her mouth, and her eyes are black.

THE ALCHEMIST

Shit, Its getting worse. I need to exorcise her, and I need that to do it.

He points at the Red Ruby necklace around Aaron’s neck.

AARON

The fuck? No!

THE ALCHEMIST

You don’t understand how important that is.

AARON

I do understand!

(beat)

It was the last thing Victoria gave me...

Tobias turns away and we notice him trail his fingers on a bracelet, almost relating to Aaron in his own way.

He turns back.

THE ALCHEMIST

Aaron, I don’t have time to mope about your sweetheart’s necklace. This girl is going to die. You need to trust me with it.

AARON

What kind of bullshit is this?! How do I know you’re telling the truth?! What the hell is going on?!

THE ALCHEMIST

No one knows what its like to lose someone more than me! I get it, Aaron. I was where you are right now. I don’t want anyone else to be where we are. With that necklace, I can prevent that.

(beat)

Please, take a leap of faith.

Aaron hesitates, then looks at the girl, who begins slashing about with her fingers.

AARON

Damnit!

He rips the necklace off and tosses it to the Alchemist.

THE ALCHEMIST

Hold her down!

Aaron grabs her by the arms and holds her still as she shrieks and howls satanic curses.

AARON

What the fuck?!

The Alchemist takes the bandage off his palm and we see the Alchemy symbol of Love carved into it as he slices it with the Red Ruby and douses it with his blood.

AARON

What are you doing?!

The Alchemist ignores him and places the Red Ruby covered in his blood on the girl’s forehead. We see black smoke shoot out of her mouth and eyes and suddenly the black veins, foam, and black eyes disappear as the air pressure of the exorcism blasts Aaron and The Alchemist a few feet away.

The girl is no longer possessed.

AARON

What did you do?

The Alchemist stands up and smirks.

THE ALCHEMIST

Blood Alchemy.

(beat, looking at the Red Ruby)

With a Philosopher’s Stone, no less.

Aaron just wide eyes him in shock from those words.

THE ALCHEMIST

Victoria gave this to you?

He wipes the blood off the Ruby, we notice his palm is still bleeding and the Ruby floats from his hand to Aaron’s.

AARON

Who the fuck are you?

The Alchemist lights a cigarette and puffs on it.

TIGHT SHOT:

The Alchemist blows smoke out of his nose and mouth.

THE ALCHEMIST

They call me “The Alchemist with No Name”.

AARON

They?

NORMAL SHOTS:

The Alchemist gestures to the demon they ripped out of the girl’s body.

It is a shadow person, howling and screeching at our protagonists.

AARON

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!?!

THE ALCHEMIST

(casually)

That is a Shadow Person. They’re some of the worst.

The Alchemist starts walking toward it, smirking and smiling a murderous grin.

THE ALCHEMIST

By the way, watch over my sister, will ya?

Aaron looks puzzled then looks at the unconscious girl they exorcised.

AARON

Oh, you’ve gotta be freakin’ kidding me...

The Alchemist unsheathes a Katana from his hip.

THE ALCHEMIST

Alright, fuck-face. For that, I’ma burn your ass.

He notices his own shadow begins trying to punch him, he stabs at his shadow on the ground. Suddenly his shadow is beside him and claws the Katana out of the Alchemist’s hands!

The Alchemist charges at the Shadow and tackles it!

The song “Mr. Blue Sky” kicks in as--

FREEZE FRAME:

The Alchemist tackling the shadow figure. Aaron in front of the girls’ unconscious body, staring in awe.

NORMAL FRAME:

The Alchemist LUNGES with a bowie knife from his boot. But he misses -- not so easy to fight a shadow man.

Shadow Person RIPS the knife out of The Alchemist’s HAND. Hurls it out of reach. SHIT.

CLOSE ON AARON. Darting to the door, about to escape. He gets outside --

And STOPS. Who is he gonna be? Someone who backs down? Or someone who fights?

What he sees, in the grass in front of him – a plastic pipe. He looks at it. Thinking.

WHACK! The Shadow Figure punches The Alchemist across the jaw. Then -WHACK! Another hit. The Alchemist only grins, his teeth red.

Then ingeniously SPITS BLOOD in The Shadow’s FACE. He punches the ground as it morphs into his own shadow. Blood splatters from the Shadow as his fist connects.

THE ALCHEMIST

So that’s how you do it...

The Alchemist SWINGS FISTS -- CONNECTS! But then --

The Shadow HITS BACK. Over and over. Harder and harder.

It doesn’t look good for The Alchemist. Until --

AARON

Oh, shit.

The Shadow backhands Aaron onto a wall and grabs the pipe. Aaron goes to punch and it connects.

The Alchemist glances -- spots a SMASHED TV on the ground, throwing sparks into a growing PUDDLE.

Aaron UNLOADS a CRUSHING ROUNDHOUSE PUNCH on The Shadow -- OOF –

The Alchemist grabs his sword and SLASHES the Shadow as it falls back from Aaron’s roundhouse.

The girl wakes up, groggy and faint, eyeing the fight.

Her gaze moves to the Necronomicon on the floor beside her.

She starts crawling to it.

The shadow is slashed, flailing back into the sparking WATER --

Which immediately ELECTROCUTES HIM! SPARKS CLIMACTICALLY RIDE UP The Shadow’s body.

The Shadow knocks the Alchemist off his feet and cracks Aaron’s lip.

The Shadow Creature drags the Alchemist on the ground and slams him down before ripping the katana out of his hands.

The girl snatches the Necronomicon and begins trying to flip through the skin crafted pages.

The Shadow stabs the Alchemist through the shoulder and into a pillar.

Aaron cracks the Shadow across the back of the skull with half a broken rotted table.

The Shadow just turns to him and kicks him in the balls.

ALCHEMIST

HEY!!! Leave ’im alone!

The Shadow glances to him.

ALCHEMIST (CONT’D)

That’s right. Come to daddy.

He looks past the shadow, smirking.

ALCHEMIST

NOW!

The girl rips a page from the book and slams it on the trail of blood the Alchemist left when he was dragged on the floor.

The Shadow turns to see where the blood leads; to the Alchemist’s bleeding arm, dripping off his fingertips onto the alchemy symbol for fire that the Alchemist drew on the floor.

The blood trail meets the blood symbol and flames begin to consume the flames and the Shadow in the middle of it.

Nothing on the floor but a puddle of blood and ashes as the Shadow Figure explodes into fire, screaming into the sky before it collapses!

Dead.

Dust-settling beat.

AARON

Did you just--?

THE ALCHEMIST

Incinerate the basterd?

Yeah. Fuck ’im.

(beat, softer now)

Hey...

He crouches down to the girl, his sister. He has not seen her in years.

ALCHEMIST

... Stevie... Are you okay?

She nods.

THE GIRL/STEVIE

Yeah... I’m fine...

The Alchemist looks at her hands and arms; She’s bleeding. A lot.

ALCHEMIST

... I thought I told you to never do that again...

STEVIE

I thought it was gonna kill you...

ALCHEMIST

I’ve survived worse.

He embraces her tightly.

ALCHEMIST (cont’d)

But you’re bleeding out and we need to move if I’m to change that.

AARON

(offscreen)

Uh, hey, yeah, hi.

The Alchemist looks to Aaron.

AARON

Yeah, I’m still here. Uh, I need a few bandages? Oh, and, before I forget, maybe tell me what the FUCK IS GOING ON?!?!?!

The Alchemist looks at the red ruby in Aaron’s necklace.

ALCHEMIST

I’ll tell you everything on the way.

He lifts Stevie in his arms and walks to Aaron.

ALCHEMIST (CONT’D)

Grab the book.

AARON

Where are we going?

ALCHEMIST

Somewhere safe.

AARON

I didn’t see her get hit, why’s she bleeding so much?

ALCHEMIST

Her body can’t handle performing blood alchemy. C’mon, we need to hurry.

AARON

There’s so much of what you just said that doesn’t make sense.

Alchemist just blankly stares at him, then walks past him in a hurry, Stevie still in his arms.

ALCHEMIST

(under his breath)

Gotta hotwire a car...

Aaron looks to the Necronomicon on the floor.

Voices begin to churn in his mind, like the book is talking to him.

Calling to him.

Haunting him.

AARON

Ah, fuck.

He snatches the Necronomicon and follows the Alchemist.

CUT TO:

EXT. TOWN SIDEWALK – NIGHT

A hobo sits and eats an old burrito he found in the dumpster and begins chewing into it.

A supernatural portal opens in front of him.

A cloaked man with long locks of white hair steps through the portal.

The hobo spits chunks of the cold burrito on the man’s boot.

The man turns and glares at him, before tearing the hobo’s throat with his fingertips.

EVIL MAN

Fuckin’ waste of blood and sperm.

A black-trench-coated MAN, like the Lone Alchemist, walks onward toward the small town.

BLACK.
