A Note to Readers

You know how some people say that life can change in an instant? That in one second, with one seemingly insignificant event, your life can be completely different. Mostly everyone has heard this phrase before in countless books, movies, televisions shows, and more. But, do you ever stop and think about what that really means? I mean, have you ever considered that statement to be anything more than that, a common phrase thrown in to make something more dramatic? Do you ever think about the fact that a certain instant can determine the results of your entire life?

The thing I have to tell you, if you haven’t already guessed, is that the phrase “life can change in an instant” is so much more than a phrase. It’s the tagline of my life story. Your life can change in the blink of an eye. It can go from normal, or at least mostly normal, to being completely out of the ordinary. To dangerous and frightening. To deadly and kind of gruesome.

You can go from being a normal fifteen-year-old girl enjoying her first few days of summer vacation, to someone way more powerful than any normal person would even think possible. You could have powers that are beyond human comprehension. You know, the kind of powers that everyone thinks are really cool in fictional stories, however when they are faced with the real thing they freak out and either want to perform experiments or throw holy water on you.

Now, my story may possibly be frightening to you, or not. You may just think that it’s really weird or maybe even kind of gross. But, imagine what it was like for me having to live through all of it. To have to see all of it. It felt like I could die at any moment. Like someone─a certain someone─was waiting around every corner. Waiting to come and murder me, which truly is saying something because I’m not really a prime murder victim.

My name is Kaitlyn Lee Kilmer─Kate for short─and I need to tell you the most important thing you may ever learn: The world you think you live in, isn’t the real one. It’s not even close.
