Tabitha's POV

My brain made me believe the events were nothing but a taunting dream. That was until my eyes fluttered open slowly, I had subconsciously identified my environment like a detective, and I later obtained memory of what had happened. The experience was unnerving, every second of it.

Yet, I still didn’t really understand how any of it was even possible. I was sure that no one could have explained it. My fingers trembled at the memory as the scent of methylated spirit and hand sanitizer trickled up my nostrils.

Bright lights lit up the room and plain white, was as far as the eye could see. I could only imagine how many sick people were stationed on this very bed. Blech! Just the thought made me have to battle the urge to gag.

I then heard a faint groan near me. Kai came to visit me, I thought as a comforting feeling aroused in me. I planned to relieve myself by facing him, but stopped as I felt the bandage fold over itself on my neck. I raised my hand and noticed that I was attached to drips. I sighed then tried to think positively as my boyfriend lay asleep on the chair near this death bed. I threw my hand back down at my side, copying the other hand as it held the hygienic blanket over myself.

But apparently I was not met with the face of expectation. It was replaced with that damned nerd. I could not help but grow irritated, I gritted my teeth in an attempt to push it away, but the gritting only seemed to have fueled my insatiable irritation.

I opened my mouth to scream at him but I didn't have the heart to do it, he looked so peaceful. He didn’t have on his glasses and he wasn't rambling. He was so much more tolerable in his slumber. I felt myself smile before I realised what I was doing, and my smile slipped into a frown.

β€œIsaac!” I called with a bit of volume in my tone, to which he leaped to his feet, startling me in the process. My eyes grew round as I clutched onto the blanket.

β€œYes, doctor. I’m up!” He shouted.

β€œGod, shut up, you idiot.” I hissed, as I rolled my eyes.

β€œOh, sorry.” He mumbled awkwardly as he rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment.

β€œWhat are you doing here?”

β€œAmara needed to take care of the store and, well...” He spoke with small hand gestures, he was such a nerd. But who was this Amara?

β€œWait...who’s Amara?” I asked with an eyebrow raised.

β€œOur boss,” I thought for a while then nodded, I just was not used to having a job, β€œand I was waiting for your family or Kai to come.”

I heard the way he said Kai. As if the name left a bitter taste in his mouth. But I actually felt the same way, at that very moment, β€œdid you call him?”

β€œAmara called your parents and they said-”

β€œThey were busy. Of course they were. But that’s fine. I’m used to it by now, anyway.”

β€œIf it was fine then why did you cut me off?”

I rolled my eyes and took a deep breath, β€œIsaac, continue please. I promise, I won’t interrupt you any further.”

β€œOkay,” he shrugged. I jutted my eyebrows in a quick upward emotion, since he didn’t even care to ask if I was fine so I traced my teeth with my tongue. β€œYour parents are busy and then they said that they would call your boyfriend, they did and then got back to us saying that he was busy.”

β€œBusy doing what?” I knew he did not have football practice today since, coach was giving them all a break.

β€œMessing around with other girls,” he mumbled to himself.

β€œWhat was that?” I asked even though I heard him perfectly.

β€œI don’t know? Bowling, volleyball, drug dealing? How am I supposed to know?” He got instantly agitated at the thought of Kai and I was just not in the mood to tease him about it. I normally would but he stayed with me, the least I could do is lay off the insults.

β€œYou could leave if you want, you know.” I looked down the blanket and stared at my feet rising slightly above the rest of my body, as it poked out.

β€œI’m sorry,” he said as he sat at the edge of the bed. β€œI’m not leaving you alone, okay?” My lips curved into a smile. I didn’t care if he was lying. The point was that he said something that no one had ever said to me before.

You may think, β€˜Oh my, stop exaggerating, someone must have told you something like that before. No, not even once. The most I’ve heard was, β€˜I love you’. By my brothers and parents. I know people have it worse. Is that supposed to make me eased with myself or grateful? It probably would but only for a while.

I told Kai how I felt about him and he said, β€˜okay’.

I felt the mood lighten as Isaac was near. His rich savour was both dominating and intimidating as it filtered the stench of day-old hospital food. Chestnut waves of silk poured over the top of his head, stopping below his brows, as if it were a veil. His hair would habitually become pushed back, but the unkemptness of his hair manifested in how worried he was. He was usually a high-spirited soul, but his face was tense. His jaws would clench every now and then as we stared silently into the eyes of each other.

His eyes; they were the most beautiful pair I’ve ever seen. This was either the closest he’d ever been to me or I never really noticed how unique they were. Also, his glasses were often a barrier. His eyes resembled the sand on a bay, simultaneously reflecting the sunset as if fragments of glass were scattered evenly throughout the sand. His eyes were a combination, and I wasn’t exaggerating when I said, it was a combo of yellow and brown. As if his eyes were a pair of an aureate crystal, tinted with brown genetics.

The structure of his face was just so alluring. His cheekbones and jaws were perfectly defined and as he clenched them, it just added prominence to his visage. Every part of his face was put flawlessly together as if God took his precious time, when he was creating him.

He wore a black t-shirt that had the sleeves rolled over his shoulders as it flaunted his bulky arms. They were not what I imagined them to be. I always pictured him as skinny, due to the way he drowned himself in heavy clothing, but that day I definitely learned to never judge a book by it’s cover.

My eyes observed the sculpt of his arm and imagined how strong he really was.

My curious eyes proceeded gradually down his arm and I then noticed how close his left hand was to mine as it sank a minor crater on the bed. I touched his hand. My veins tingled as electric currents shot through my body and emitted from my mouth in a warm gush of wind. I saw the way he simultaneously flinched, he felt it too.

Our fingers fiddled with each other as the shock waves exploded and dissolved into our blood cells, intimately, we were attached. I then placed my hand indecisively on the bed, folded out as a welcoming. He stared down at our hands and so did I, he held onto mine and at that exact moment our eyes met.

I could have sworn that I was a yellow stream flash across his eyes. My eyebrows knitted into eachother for a brief moment, for my mind took discarded of all uncertainty as he squeezed my hand slightly tighter. His hands were so warm and soft, especially for a guy.

He looked like he was still worried, β€œwhat’s wrong?” I asked.

β€œI’m upset.” He pouted, before he drew his bottom lips between his teeth.

β€œWhy?”

β€œI’m too blind to even see you.” He sulked and I slightly snickered. β€œDon’t laugh at me. You couldn’t survive a day in my life, for sure.”

β€œYes, I could.” I challenged him with an eyebrow raised.

β€œTsk. How could you survive a day without looking at your precious face?” I chuckled stiffly. How did I go so long without you? It was as if I were in a drugged daze as if I took psychedelics. Endorphins flowed into my aura, due to his presence.

I squinted my eyes shut. What the hell was going on? I never felt this way with Kai before. Well, we didn’t even get the chance to talk, since he skipped the talking stage and went right to the intimate stage. The kind of intimacy I disagreed with, but because I didn’t want him to leave, I would lie to him, saying I wanted it.

I told myself that I wanted it, over and over, but I just couldn’t lie to myself. I completely regretted my first time and discarded the memory as a scar of my past, because the entire time I was just supporting his, and what he called, β€˜manly needs’. I swear, if all men are the same, I’m so going gay.

After our first time, he was more present in my life than ever. But whenever I tried to refuse him, he would threaten to leave me for a cheerleader, but I would tell him to go to hell, so he would remind me how powerful his father was and how quickly he could dispose of a body.

Sometimes, I really hated Kai and other times I disliked him a little less than usual. But I was in love with him at the same time, I don’t even know why I got myself into that relationship. I went head-first and still ended up falling on my ass.

β€œHey,” said Isaac in his rough voice, β€œstop overthinking or reminiscing or worrying. You're going to be fine, I’ll protect you from anything and anyone, no matter how much you’d push me away.” He continued as he took his left hand from mine and stroked my face, holding onto my jaw as he said, β€œYou're safe.” He was hot and so sweet. He’d protect me? Would he, or was he just saying that? But he was here for me, after all. He then held back onto my hand, as he beamed and so was I.

Suddenly, the curtains drew open and in came my best friends. Molly and Ruby. My smile slipped as I ripped my hand from Isaac’s grasp and tapped on his thigh for him to move. He stood up and backed away as the girls came running up to me.

β€œOh my God, Tabby. Are you okay?” Asked Molly as her australian accent and her words merged together. I peered up at Isaac who stared right down his nose at me. I nodded to Molly who came and gave me a hug followed by Ruby. Isaac took up his coat that he hung on the chair and put it on. Molly and Ruby came to my sides and tried to take pictures.

β€œSmile, Tabitha!” Said Ruby through her teeth, then smiled at her camera, she took the picture after adjusting my clothes and hair and herself. She analysed them as if it were an exam, then shook her head from left to right as she chew the inside of her mouth in thought, β€œmy eyes look uneven, I have a zit there, how do you look this good, Tabby? Oh, and I want my left dimple to show.”

β€œFucking hell, Rubin!” Suspired Molly as she threw her hands into the air.

Ruby rushed around the bed and by that time Isaac drew on his coat, but left it unbuttoned as he flung the both sides behind him and stuck his hands into the pockets. It came back down but his arms prevented it from coming back over his chest. The coat was long, as it brushed the inner part of his knee.

β€œRuby! Ruby! God, Rubin is a fucking guy's name.” She said as she pressed her fingers against her temples while pacing around the bed to get a better picture, her phone still in her hand.

β€œWhatever.” Molly had her arms folded over her chest as she tapped a foot on the floor impatiently.

β€œSmile, Tabby!” Said Ruby as she took the picture. She observed the picture then said, β€œlet me try the other side again.”

β€œNo, it’s my turn.” Whined Molly as she ran up to me and took a quick picture, from the left side of the bed, where Ruby previously was.

Ruby came back for another picture to the right side of me and slightly bumped into Isaac as she was in a rush. β€œWho the fuck are you?” She asked as she gawked up at him.

He glanced at me then walked in my direction, up to the night stand table. I shifted my position to get further away from him, just in case, and he chuckled to himself. I hoped that he would understand the circumstances. He snatched up his glasses and flashed a look at me before leaving.

The girls watched him walk away and Ruby said, β€œHe’s hot. I call dibs.” She bit her lip seductively at him, then came to take another picture.

I knew I had to stay away from Isaac, especially now that I have these unhealthy feelings toward him. Though he seemed well-built, Kai’s father was a dangerous person. I didn’t want Isaac to get involved in my mess of a life.

They both stood up and edited the pictures to fit their liking. β€œGod, Tabs. You're so beautiful, even without makeup. But you should get a nose job.”

Was that racist? I asked my self. But I didn't want to stir up drama at this state.

β€œThanks.” I mumbled as I stared at my feet.

β€œOkay, we could go now.” mumbled Ruby as she stuffed her phone in her pocket. I looked over at Ruby and saw her mouth β€˜what?’ I then turned to see Molly whispering through her teeth, aggressively. But stopped as she noticed I saw her. β€œBut you said we just came for streaks. T-To send on snapchat.” I heard Molly slap herself on the forehead, my head whipped around to watch her.

β€œNo! You idiot-brain.” She shrieked as she screwed up her face.

β€œOh right, we have to take a boomerang for Instagram, silly me!” Molly had enough, she stomped up to Ruby and tapped her behind her head, β€œOw, what was that for?”

β€œDon’t make me kick you, shut the hell up!” She faced me, β€œTab, she really didn’t mean it like that.”

β€œIt’s fine you guys could go. You don’t have to stay in this gross room with me, at least if you don’t want to.”

β€œPhew.” Sighed Ruby but she was silenced by a deadly glare from Molly.

I forced a smile, β€œguys, it’s okay. At Least you came.” Came for pictures.

β€œBye!” They both shouted as they dashed out. I rolled my eyes. Whatever, I’d just wait for Kai to come.

…

He never came and neither did anyone else. Well, Amara, our boss came and left me some lunch. I didn’t want to eat it at first, but then I saw the hospital's food, no one else came to bring food for me, so I ate it.

It was now the day after and it was time to go home. I stood outside the hospital and waited for Kai to come, soon he arrived.

β€œGet in.” He shouted over the blasting music. I opened the door and hopped in the car. What a gentleman. He then drove off. β€œSo I’m stopping off at Brian’s house, then we’d pick up some food and then we could go back to my place.” He smiled as put his arm around me. β€œSounds good?”

β€œYeah, whatever.” I said as I looked outside the window.

…

As soon as we entered his room he took his shirt off. Then came from behind and pressed his body against mine, he held onto my face and positioned it in an angle where he reached his head around and twined his lips into mine. He then placed his free hand on my hip and glided all the way up slowly to my neck. He held onto my neck and tightened his grip.

I pulled away and scrutinized my face, my hands fastened around my neck, β€œwhat?” he asked in mere confusion.

β€œWhat? What?! Oh my God. My neck, Kai!”

β€œWhat’s wrong with your neck?”

I scoffed in disbelief, β€œdo you even know why I was in the hospital?”

β€œNo.”

I bent over and held onto my knees, chuckling, β€œHa! You didn’t even ask. You didn’t even care if I was fine? My neck was sliced open, for crying out loud!”

He thought for a while and had me thinking that he felt sympathetic toward me, β€œWell, obviously it wasn’t that bad since you could shout.” He said as he walked over and laid on his bed.

β€œThat’s not the point, Kai. The point is, I’m your girlfriend, you’re supposed to care.”

β€œIf you did what you were supposed to do, this relationship wouldn’t have been β€˜this bad’ anyways.” He said as he used his hands to quote his lines. β€œThat’s all you ever do. Walk around complaining about everything. Just like those two little twits, you surround yourself with.”

β€œYou know what, Kai? Fuck you! I’m going home.” I said as I stomped toward the door. But he hopped from the bed and stood before me, preventing me from fleeing the scene.

β€œWhat about our plans?” He asked. I scoffed and continued to go, I opened the door but he ran up to it and slammed it shut, β€œalright, alright. I’m sorry, okay. Let me see it.”

β€œSee what.”

β€œYour little boo boo.”

I paused for a while in thought. Should I really take it off, this soon? The doctors said I should take it off in a couple of days, but I don’t know. Maybe, if I showed him, he would have some sympathy and give me a break.

β€œFine.”

I peeled back the plaster and said β€˜told ya’ with my facial expressions. But he held his hand over his mouth and began to chuckle which soon resulted in him bursting into laughter. My face instantly changed to a dumbfounded expression as he walked over to his bed, looking as if he was weak-kneed.

He propping himself at the edge of the bed and hung on, slamming his hands onto the mattress in laughter.

I walked into his bathroom and stared at myself in the mirror. The slice, it was gone. Not a trace of its existence lingered on my skin. I traced where it was with my fingers and the memories formed a slideshow in my brain that spun up a tornado of memories.

I only had three words to say about this, β€œWhat. The. Fuck?”

Kai soon came over and placed his hand on my shoulder still half chuckling to himself, β€œI know that… you wanted attention before but I didn’t know you’d want it this much? God, how did you pull that off? The whole β€˜I’m your girlfriend, you're supposed to care’. He mocked, he twirled his fingers in a circular motion and slightly bounced on his toes.

I stared at him in annoyance, β€œyou look gay.”

He stopped immediately, β€œand what if I was. You have a problem with that?”

β€œNo but you do since you stopped so quickly.” I said as I walked out of the bathroom, he followed me then grabbed my hand and spun me around.

β€œIf I can’t tell you then let me show you how straight I am.” I stared up at him. He planted a kiss on my neck and I closed my eyes trying to like it but I just thought of Isaac. I stepped away, trying to catch my breath.

β€œI’m sorry, babe. I’m not in the mood.”

β€œCome on, you gotta give me a better reason than that. Your neck is fine so?”

He was right. I had no more excuses to get out of the situation so I just gave in. I couldn't tell him that I craved someone other than him. I developed feelings for Isaac way too quickly. All he had to do was be there for me and hold my hand. Now he probably hates me.

So I did what I would normally do. I returned to Kai and placed my hand on his athletic body. He then took me from the floor, I wrapped my legs and arms around him, then he threw me onto the bed.

He came over my body, his eyes glistened with lust and greed, there was no backing out now.

You know, people look at my life and say, β€˜I wish I were her and lived in her world’, no you don’t. Because my life isn’t Wonderland! Because my life isn’t all cupcakes and Rainbows. So don’t think it is because you're far from the truth. Appreciate the world you live in because you don't know how much worse it can be to be in the body of another.
