Chapter 4

Meanwhile back at Daniel’s house, Toby and Daniel were still standing in the yard wondering what to do.

“Well what do we tell her? I mean we have to tread lightly on this we could either keep her with us or lose her completely.” Toby told Daniel.

“I know I think we should just tell her the truth and everything that is going on. I mean she is a fairy so she knows who Valentino is everyone knows who that jerk is.” Daniel responded turning towards the house.

“Well lets go and see what is going on. We cant put it off forever you know that Valentino will be back and do whatever means necessary to get to her.” Toby told him striding towards the house while Daniel ran to catch up.

“What I want to know is why is she so important? Why did they kill Lillianna but not her?” Daniel mused aloud.

“Daniel, your going to drive yourself crazy thinking like that.” Toby scolded him.

“I know, but I feel like we are missing something here, Toby. We need to find out more about Alice’s family. I feel she’s somehow important, but I just cant place my wing on it.” Daniel told him pulling the front door open for Toby. They were met with quiet the surprise when they saw Alice in the kitchen completely at home fixing dinner for them.

“We’ve only been outside an extra 10 minutes and it already smells amazing in here.” Toby told her sniffing the air appreciatively. “Daniel never cooked or even now cooks that good of food.” Toby told her. “ Ouch what the hell man?” Toby exclaimed after Daniel hit him. “I’m just telling her the truth you’re an awful cook. I swear if it wouldn’t have been for Lillianna we would have starved at training.” He said to Alice glaring at Daniel.

“Yea you are right.” Daniel reluctantly agreed as he wandered down the hall.

“Don’t mind him. He’s usually grumpy when he’s hungry.” Toby whispered conspiratorially to Alice, but still slightly loud enough for Daniel to catch it.

“I heard that.” Daniel yelled down the hall. Toby and Alice busted up in laughter and as Toby watched her laughing at something as silly as that he realized he was starting to really like her. “Tell me about yourself? Like are you from Illmore too? What’s your job?” Toby asked her.

“Sorry about, Toby here he’s just slightly nosey.” Daniel told Alice before she had a chance to answer.

“Sorry I haven’t seen her around before and I’m just slightly curious.” Toby replied playfully defensive. Alice watched them mock fight and realized they were more like brothers than anything else.

“Ok boys, dinner time.” She said as she put the plates out. They ate in silence for a few minutes except for the occasional exclamations of how good it was.

“So can you answer the questions now?” Toby asked her shoving his plate away and heaving a great sigh. “Oh and that food was fabulous. Now back to the questions at hand, Alice. We need to know what is going on so we best know how to handle your unique situation.” Toby told her point blank.

“Well for starters I am a fairy but I am not from Illmore’. I’m an island fairy from the isles in the Phoenix River. I am the Queen’s daughter. Well I guess I was I don’t know if I can go home now. I was sent to the mortal realm to hide from my mother’s enemies. She never told me who they were or what exactly they wanted. All I was told was they were dangerous and wanted to kill my mother and her daughters.” Alice told them quietly.

“I can more than likely guarantee that the enemy your mom talked about was Valentino and Alex.” Daniel told her point blank.

“Yea Daniel nice job being subtle like we discussed.” Toby told him.

“There is no beating around it Toby especially after everything that has happened lately.” Daniel said raising his voice.

“All I want to know is how can I find out if my mother is alright or not?” Alice asked them.

I have to send a letter to the council and King Stephan tonight. I’ll also send word about your mom.” Toby reassured her.

“Thanks” she said smiling sadly. “So now its your guys turn. Where are you from? Why are you here?” she asked enthusiastically.

“Well we are both from the valley country of Illmore’. We were both trained as guardians growing up.” Daniel started to tell her. Alice listened in rapt attention. She had always heard stories about Illmore’ and the fairies there, but had never seen nor met them. She was also pretty amazed that Toby had been sent by the king personally.

“Well I am going to turn in.” Daniel told them yawning. “I have to actually work tomorrow. Good night guys. Yell at me if you need anything.”

“I can clean this up then I have to go write my letter to the council and to Stephan.” Toby said rising and collecting the dishes.

“Here let me help.” Alice hurriedly told Toby. Soon they got into sync washing and drying and talking. Pretty soon they were both seated on the kitchen floor laughing and talking about their childhoods. They compared their home countries and were shocked and amazed by all the similarities yet all the odd differences. Before they realized it, it was well after midnight.

“I wonder why our countries don’t talk.” Alice asked yawning.

“I don’t know, but it sounds like a question for tomorrow.” Toby told her rising off the floor. He leaned down to grab her hands and help her up.

“Oh my gosh I am so sorry.” Alice said completely embarrassed that she had almost fallen into him.

“Its cool.” Toby told her breathlessly. He realized in that moment he was close enough to kiss her, before it all completely clicked that he wanted to do just that she let go of his hands and turned to walk to the living room.

“Good night, Toby.”

Crash.

The sound of glass breaking shattered the silent night.

“What the hell?” Toby asked flinging his bedroom door open with his sword drawn. Daniel came flying out of his room with his gun in hand. They both looked at each other and almost started laughing at their choice of weapons.

“I have no clue what that was. Wait, do you smell that?” Daniel told Toby.

“Smoke!” They yelled in unison running towards the living room. They stopped when they saw the sunroom and living room engulfed in flames.

“Where is Alice?” Toby asked frantically, but as soon as the words left his mouth he knew the answer. Off in the distance through the smoke haze they could see Alex standing in the yard. There were wolves howling in the distance.

“Come on we have to get out of here.” Daniel told Toby as he was scooping up the cats. They ran out the front door. Toby continued running till he tackled Alex and started punching him.

“Where is she, Alex?” Toby asked each word punctuated by a blow.

“I don’t know,Toby!” Alex said while trying to protect his face.

“Like hell you do. Your boyfriend kidnapped her. Hell he probably is the one who ordered the attack against her.” Toby yelled as Daniel tried pulling him off Alex.

“That’s enough.” Daniel yelled at him. This will not bring her back if anything it will cause a delay in finding her.

“You wont ever find her.” Alex sneered as he brushed dirt off himself. “She’s ours now and soon the rest of the immortal world will be ours too. Come on guys.” He said as he held up his arms and turned and walked away. “Oh and Toby Val told me all about Sophia. I promise that we will treat Alice better than her.” He sneered as he morphed and ran off into the night.

“Come on, Toby.” Daniel said pulling Toby up off the ground. “The fire department is here. We need to go talk to them and get a place at the motel. We will figure it out from there.”

They made their way to the house and talked to the firefighters for a few minutes.

“Hey where is Elmer? Toby asked Daniel.

“I have no clue. I didn’t even think of him in all the commotion.” Daniel replied.

“Well we better find him before we leave.” Toby told him starting across the yard yelling for Elmer.

“Aw someone likes Elmer.” Daniel taunted him while looking for Elmer.

“I do not like that over grown beast.” Toby replied indignantly. They continued searching and finally found him hiding in the woods. They took him back to the house and locked him in the shed. Then Toby and Daniel went into town to discuss what to do and how to find Alice.

“How will we find Alice?” Toby asked in a worried voice. “I can’t let Valentino do what hes done before.” Toby said as he paced the small motel room.

“Don’t worry, Toby?” Daniel tried to reassure him as he poured another rum and coke. “I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

They both were quiet as they both slipped back in time each lost in his own thoughts. It was almost 250 years to the day, but it felt just like yesterday to Toby. It was a night he would never forget. Valentino had convinced the town they lived in that Toby’s then fiancée was a witch. People had long forgotten about the Salem Witch Trials, but at Valentino’s insistence she was tried as a witch. Consequently she was burned at the stake. Toby had never forgiven Valentino for that night.

“Well at least now we don’t have to worry about a witch trial again. It’s actually ok for people to be witches now.” Daniel tried joking but it fell flat at Toby’s glare.

“I just want to know what he wants from her or hell where did he take her.” Toby asked throwing back his drink in one large gulp.

“We will find out tomorrow as for now we need to get some sleep.” Daniel told Toby taking his empty glass from him. Before they could get into bed there was a sharp knock on the door.

“Who could that be?” Toby asked Daniel.

“Not sure.” Daniel replied as he stumbled to the door.

“Oh my God” Daniel and Toby said in unison.

“Hello boys.” A deep voice answered them. “Such a long time and no letters?”
