Jennifer Mirada has no idea she isn't fully human. After being attacked on her way home, she learns that she is part of an ancient race of people who control the elements, and is shipped off to magical school. As she navigates the stormy waters of school life, she must also prepare for an evil that has been freed. Will she learn enough in time to survive?

Prologue

Jhadara sat in her cell, and appeared to meditate. Tro looked at her pensively, and motioned to the Wise Ones to leave them.

The door closed with a creak, and Jhadara opened her eyes. “Dearest sister, have you come to visit me?” she asked, her tone mocking.

“After all this time, and still so bitter,” Tro said quietly. She knelt down, her eyes meeting Jhadara’s. “How long has it been? A thousand years?”

“Too long.” Jhadara shut her eyes and acted like Tro wasn’t there. “Soon to be at end. Leave me.”

“Sister, must you continue like this? I know you don’t meditate.” Tro laid her hand on Jhadara’s shoulder.

“If you know so much, then stop me,” Jhadara replied. “You know what’s going to happen.”

Tro smiled. “Even though we are opposites of each other, you are still my elder sister.” She got up, and took a few steps back. “Remember, true power comes to those who are worthy.”

Jhadara opened her eyes, a sinister smile appearing on her lips. “It is time.”

Lightning flashed outside, illuminating the cell and Jhadara. Tro gasped, and Jhadara laughed.

“This is true power!” she exclaimed.

Lightning hit the cell, once, twice, a third time. The third strike blew the wall apart.

Jhadara rose slowly, radiating power as Wise Ones filed into the cell. “Goodbye, sister,” she said to Tro, and walked out through where the wall was once.

The Wise Ones stood still and watched Jhadara leave. Tro sighed. “So everything has to happen, regardless of what we try.”
